The resetter actually resets the Reset Ink Counter not a chip. It resets the ink level (ink metrer) . You can use the resetter tool.
Download the mptool from this site:

You may have to copy and paste the link into your browser.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.

Did you change to new Canon tanks? Or, did you refill your tanks.

The Canon cartridges talk to the printer and this is why you get the error message U163.

Canon voids warranties on printers where ink has been refilled. Canon uses a patented ink and you should expect your ink cartridges to start leaking and then spilling eventually as the pigments are not the same size.

However, in the meantime you can read this Tip I wrote on how to disable the error message and trouble.

Go here to read and print the tip off to reset your canon printer.

Reset ink level on canon mg2120 after ink refill

The following procedures may be used to reset the Canon printer ink level monitoring following the installation of a refilled Canon 30, 31, 40, 41, 50, 51, 210, 211, 240, or 241 integrated ink cartridges. In most cases, the error/alert will need to be cleared to enable printing. Ink waste container reset procedures are also provided below.
NOTE: for multi-cartridge installation, the procedure(s) may need to be repeated twice.

For PGI-5, PGI-9PBK, CLI-8, PGI-220 CLI-221 PGI-225 CLI-226 PGI-250 CLI-251 Cartridges: These are new Canon cartridges which have an embedded chip on each cartridge. If you just refill the ink, the printer will still reads the cartridge as empty. You have two choices:

Purchase a "refillable cartridge" from
BCH or other sellers. These refillable cartridges have an auto-reset chip (non OEM) and will reset automatically.
Use a chip resetter (e.g., search Canon + model number + resetter on eBay). Follow the instruction below to refill your original cartridge, and use the resetter to reset the chip.

Is it true that you cannot refill a cartridge for the Canon MP190 as the printer will not accept the cartridge

yes this is true, the ink tanks have little chips on them that know how much ink they have and how much approx has been used by the type of printing done, when the chip thinks the ink is empty it tells your printer, then your printer tells you.
you could get a chip resetter then be able to refill your tanks, or get a ink refill system for your printer £50 ($90USD) and is well worth it.

How do i go about refilling epson T5591/2/3/4/5/6

Before you can have unlimited refilling you must need this devices:

Option 1: The chip resetter which you will need to manually reset the cartridge before refilling to enable the printer to recognize a new cartridge.

Heres the link where you can buy the resetter:

Option 2: You a new set of empty cartridges with autoreset chips in it. No manual resetting needed, what you need is to refill and monitor the ink level.

Explanation: When the printer detected that the cartridge is empty, the printer sends data to the cartridges and the cartridge understand what the printer says, then the cartridge automatic chip resetter will re trigger the logic circuit built in into it to reset into full ink level.

Here is the link of the autoreset chip what Im taking about:

I have the error message that it can not recognize the ink cartridge and it is blocking me from using the macine in any function. I have removed the ink cartrdige and it still says it cannot recognize...

An ink tank which has once been empty is
installed. Replace the applicable ink tank with
a new one.
Printing with a once-empty or refilled ink
tank can damage the print head.
If printing is continued without replacing the
refilled ink tank, press the Stop/Reset button
for 5 sec. or longer to record the use of a
refilled ink tank.

MP610 does not recognize ink tank . This keeps happening even after restting the tank (tank is full). Initially, I could lift the tank up and reseat it and it would resolve the problem...not anymore. I...

Every now and then we get a defective cartridge, and Canon will replace it. If it's generic or refilled, you just need a new one. It's a cartridge problem, not a printer problem

Canon MP610 ink refill

Without the resetter it will continue to give error codes, holding the resume button for 5-10 seconds sometimes will turn off ink level reporting, but you either need the resetter or to purchase and install reset circuit boards on each cartridge you refill.

My printer is saying that it does not recognize one of my cartrid

First thing to check is whether there's any soiling on the chip (eg: ink smear or similar). Try removing the cartridge and gently cleaning the chip with a bit of tissue and then replace it.

Otherwise if this an OEM (ie: Canon branded) cartridge, it's possible that the chip has been damaged and you can get a replacement from Canon.

However, you can save yourself problems in the future (as well as open the option for refilling) if you get a chip resetter (the most popular keyword is "redsetter") as this can actually reset problem chips and get them working.

Ink for Canon MP500

Sorry this took a day or two to get back to you.

The Resetters do work. Canon says using this voids your warranty.

You can only get the patented ink from Canon and they do not sell the ink for refilling. They emphatically insist you use their ink only.

This can be viewed two ways. They want to make money on reselling ink to you. And that is true.
Their ink has pigments of a certain size and any other ink does not and they state for this reason it will cause problems. So if you refill ink, I have myself, you should be aware that a tank can be refilled a couple of times maybe three before you have a problem. So, now that you are aware, just use the refill kits with consideration of what risk you are taking. I would only refill a tank twice, in my practice of doing this.

For me, I live at 5,000 ft in altitude and this makes refilling ink tanks impossible, they leak all over the place because of our altitude only.

Hope this addresses your concerns. Ask me if you have any other questions. I have never heard of an extender. You don't need software to reset your printer, if you follow the instructions and they work for you your fine.

What is a chip resetter?

John, the chip resetter usually will not work on a faulty chip. You could make sure that the chip is aligned on the cartridge and connecting properly in the printer but it will generally be an electronic problem inside the chip itself. You will most probably need a new cartridge OR replace the faulty chip with the one off an old empty cartridge of the same colour, and then reset it using a "chip resetter" device.
