Re reading your question I am going to assume that you get a disk read error on boot.  That tends to indiacte that either your disk has been damaged or the data has be corrupt for some reason.
You can either get some kind of disk repair utility such as spinrite (http://www.grc.com) and see if that helps or you can take the drive out mount it in another machine and copy your data off, before attempting a recovery on the disk.

A bad hard drive or the boot sector (the map of the hard drive contents) has an error.

You have two choices. If you run regular backups you can do a full restore including the boot sector, if not, you'd have to format the hard drive and lose your data. Then reinstall Windows and start from scratch.

The other option that loses your data, as well, is replacing the hard drive if it's defective.

Hi,

I suggest try to remove the HDD or the storage device on your laptop and take it to any computer local center and have them back up your data thats the safest way for not losing your data because if you try to fix it and you accidentally reformat the HDD or storage device you'll lose all your data. The HDD is located at the bottom of the laptop, try to remove all of the cover. It looks like on the picture.

Hello, While trying to boot up, I received the message, "disk read error occurred. Press ctrl+alt+del". The same message appears after I press ctrl+alt+del. What can I do to resolve the issue? Thank...

This is called a disk error which generally means your disk has failed. You need to get your data off it if it is not backed up. You will have to replace the disk.
A local computer shop might, just might, be able to install it into a second computer and read the data. The more you fuss with it the lower your chances of getting any data off it.
If this answers your question, I'd appreciate 4 thumbs. I do this for fun and do not get paid.

Acer pc disk read error

this error is not usually associated with data loss, DO NOT RE-PARTITION THE DRIVE. Your data is likely safe and sound.

Here's how we'll recover your data. Try each step below, in order, and see if your drive becomes accessible after each step. In my experience, you won't start seeing results until step 5 or so.

1. Run CHKDSK /R /P from the recovery console (it will typically find no error)
2. run FIXBOOT from recovery console (typically has no result)
3. run FIXMBR from recovery console (typically has no result)
4. Run the manufacturer's diagnostic utility, downloaded from their website (it will typically find no error)
5. Changing the drives from cable select to Master/Slave may fix it.
6. Replacing the data cable may fix it, but usually not.
7. Setting the BIOS to use defaults may fix it, but usually not.
8. Changing the BIOS drive settings from auto to user-specified, ensuring that LBA is selected may fix it.
9. Pulling the CMOS battery to let the BIOS lose it settings may work.

''A disk error has occured'' upon start up

You cannot. (Remove any media from the diskette-drive and from the CD drive, and try again to reboot.)

The message is indicating that the disk-drive containing Windows is *NOT* readable. So, nothing can be read from the disk-drive.

Take the computer, and the original "IBM System Recovery" set of CD-ROMs, to a computer-store, and get them to remove the "dead" disk-drive, and install a new one, and to re-install Windows from the IBM CDs.

Maybe, while Windows itself cannot be read from the "old" disk-drive, the computer-store *MAY* be able to recover your "data" files.

A Disk read error occurred upon booting

This could be a sign of the hard drive having a problem.
I would recommend that you do a scan of the hard drive to check for errors.
You didn't mention which operating system you have, but you need to click on My Computer and then right-click on your hard drive. Go to Properties and then Tools.
Once there, select the option that tells you to check the disk for errors. Check the entire drive. Note that this will not run right away. You must restart your computer, as the utility needs exclusive access to the hard drive.
If this type of error reoccurs, it's time to back up your data, 'cause you probably have a hard drive that is dying.

Everytime i try to start up my computer the message disk read error occurred then it asks me to press ctrl alt del to restart but it just repeats the same thing when i start over

1 - Have you tried a different IDE cable?
If not give it a go and do a repair if needed again!

2 - You may have a corrupt MBR (master boot record)!! You will need to reformat and do Fdisk /mbr to delete the master boot record!! Save all data first as this will not allow you to access any of your data as all file location addresses are located in the MBR!!

3 - Your harddrive may have a bad sector get a zerofill tool(low level formatting tool)!! This will rewrite you HD's sectors putting them back to factory spec's!! Maxtors is called Maxblast you can get it from thier site!!

4 - or it could be a defective drive, but most read errors are due ot corrupt MBR or a bad sector!!
