Standby LED flashes red 4 times with pause then 4 times
The TV suddenly shut down the other night while i was watching it. Standby LED flashes 4 times - pause then 4 times - pause and so on.
At first i left it for 5 minutes or so and then turned it back on. It started up and ran for 3-5 minutes then shut down with standby led flashinf red 4 time again. Now it will not run at all. As soon as the lamp lights it shuts down.
All vents and fan are clean. Replaced lamp on the advice of dealer but no change. Lamp LED was never lit or never flashed.
Any suggestions? Set was purchased in Dec 2005 and has had a fair bit of use - about ready for lamp replacement anyways but new lamp made no difference and old lamp still lights for approx 2-5 seconds before TV shuts down. Never gets to displaying a picture.

You either have a bad fan or one of the rotation sensors mounted on one of the fans has failed. Take the back off the set and see it the main fan slightly right of center is rotating. If it is, there are two more fans, one mounted right above the lamp and another on the optical block itself. You will have to pull the optical block to check those.

Those blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices. http://homenol.blogspot.com/ http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
If blinks continue without any pause, the main board is faulty.
Over voltage protection function is turned ON. Just unplug the TV from AC mains wall socket, and re-plug it back after 10 minutes or so and check. If it do not help you, the main power regulator board should be checked and replaced. If you wish to get more details about blinking codes to Sony brand TVs, check the site linked here. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ Pull up previous posts there, either by type
in the model name to your set in its search box, or view it in Mosaic
In standby mode (red led on/after the led stops from blinking), press "Display", "5", Volume (-)", "Power on" on the remote control in sequence, self diagnostic screen will be display, let me know the what is on the screen to diagnose where the fault came from.
Since the TV is still receiving power, the problem is going to be with the TV's mainboard. After you unplugged the TV and plugged it back in, you said the power light went out again, so I assume the standby light wasn't flashing again? The flashing standby light is indicating an error code so my suggestion is to contact Sony for service options regardless if there is a warranty or not because service is the only solution to this situation. Don't forget to provide them the error code or 4 flashes repeating.
The red light should be blinking a code. For example it will blink 4 times pause then 4 times pause or 5times pause 5 times pause, whatever the error might be. Let me know what it is and then we can help more.
