Question about Toshiba 57H83 TV

1 Answer

Picture Problem My neighbor is trying to sell me his tv and I want to know if it is worth fixing. I can get it pretty cheap. The problem is with the picture, it looks very dark and the color just doesn't seem right. I also noticed that the blue convergence is off. They said that it did it about a year ago and they had it fixed under warrenty. Now its doing it again and they want to get rid of it. Is it worth messing with or not? What kind of cost am I looking at? I work in electronics and am capable of doing the work myself. Thank you very much for any help.

It's very easy to fix convergence manually from the menu, unless it's really really off. there is a button on the front that is an auto focus, that should be used first, then try to manually dial it in. it should be very close after the autofocus (called touchfocus) I got mine for $400 used, and it's great!

Yeah one of the circuit boards is getting bad, they do wear out overtime and this seems to be the number one breakdown on new TVs. It's a pretty simple repair to fix and to acquire the new boards but you might as well just buy a new TV at that point it's not worth it to fix a 6 year old TV and spend that much on it when you could have other issues with it at this point. I would put it on Craigslist for 25 bucks and just get a new TV I know it's sad to say but it's not like the old TVs were you could fix the parts that were bad and make it worth your time and effort but these new ones the parts that go bad are the expensive ones and you can buy a new one for so cheap you're just better off

I believe you have lost the green channel leaving only the red and blue. It could be an internal connection like a solder joint or connector, or it could be component failure from the CRT to an adjustment pot. Being the set is ten years old it wouldn't be worth spending a lot of money on it. You can buy a 27 inch TV now for almost what a repair would cost. If the picture was very good before this probem you may try to get it fixed cheap. Otherwise it probably wouldn't be worth it.
My 27 inch TV's (A Sony and a Sharp) are pretty old and I would fix them myself if the picture tube was very good.
This may be a very good time to buy considering the discounts being offered. ;-)).

Hello Dabizot,

With the price of the new tv's, I would recommend getting a new tv. It's only a 19" and you can get a flat panel 19" for less than $ 200.00 It may cost you $ 100 plus to get it repaired along with any new parts. If you want to spend less money try looking at the yard sales, people are always selling used TV's for cheap.

Standard dvd players are pretty cheap. Hardly worth repairing. Under one hundred dollars in a lot of place and I have seen new ones on ebay for under fifty dollars after shipping. Your model sells for about 60 -115 on ebay used.
