SOURCE: limited hot water

Some checks are surely possible but PLEASE make sure that the 220VAC is absolutely shut down.
In a home we built in 1977, circuit breakers were improperly marked and I, with decades of experience, believed I had turned off the power to our water heater only to find that it was still 'hot' and blew away a screwdriver tip before thinking to check across terminals to see if the voltage was in fact OFF.
You may have the same problem I had twice over ~30 years; that the lower heating element is open/failed. These typically will gather a coating of mineral deposits and eventually be unable to transfer their heat to water fast enough to avoid overheating and failing.
The limited hot water comes from the fact that the thermostat is checking for temperature at the exit point of the heater; the top. The thermostat turns on both elements but with only the top one still working it heats 10-15% of the tank capacity and then shuts off.
With your meter set to the lowest Ohms scale (typically 200 Ohms), measure across the element terminals. You should measure pretty much a short since the elements have an extremely low resistance; on the order of 10-20 ohms, if you measure anything that goes 'off-scale' on the 200 ohm range (normally blinking), the element is shot.
Don't forget to drain the tank before pulling out the element!
If you are in the US, near any city, check your white pages for: Johnstone Supply or check their website to see if one is near you.You will pay 1/3-1/2 hardware store prices for the replacement element - buy two, store the second one. They are 'wholesale' to the trade but have never been refused.
If you don't feel like wading through their extensive website, you can take the element with you and they can give you what you need.

SOURCE: warm water only

You can eliminate the shower control knob possibility by turning on your hot water anywhere else in the house. If you get hot water in other places, then it could be the knob causing it. A substantial lime buildup in the tank can also cause poor heat transfer from the elements to the water.

If tankless computer is less than 5 years old, then call Rheem for local technician qualified to work on this type of computer that heats water.

If tankless is older than 5 years, then replace with tank-type electric water heater for $285 from Lowes.

Avoid Rheem, Richmond, Palmoa, GE water heating products since this company does not post service manuals.

Choose AO Smith, American, State, craftmaster, Whirlpool etc.

Where can I get the new sensor unit for Whirlpool water heater (N40S61-403)?

1) Call whirlpool
1-877-817-6750
Need model and serial number located on label on side of tank

2) Copy following links for troubleshoot and repair resources, including service manual by type of gas control valve.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermocouple.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-gas-water-heater.html#intellivent

3) Get parts sheet from manual that arrived with new product.

4) Otherwise, neither Whitlpool or Craftmaster.has up-to-date product manual, parts sheet, or service manual, rendering their sites near useless for many owners.
Whirlpool site has 'troubleshoot and repair' section, but this is NO help for serious DIY repair.

I have a Bradford White water heater (model# MITW50L6LN10) that started making noise yesterday. Tonight when the family got home we started a bath for the kids and surprise surprise no hot water left in...

Probably cheaper to fix existing water heater.
The problem might be the power vent, or the power vent might be short cycling because the gas control valve is bad, or vacuum switch has gone bad.
Call Bradford White and get their recommendation for your specific model.
http://www.bradfordwhite.com/contact.asp
http://www.bradfordwhite.com/supportserv.asp
http://www.bradfordwhite.com/findaserial.asp

Bradford White is very good brand of water heater
Rheem, Richmond, GE are good.
I prefer the AO Smith, American, State, Reliance, Craftmaster. Kenmore, Whirlpool brand since air intake screen is located on bottom of unit and can be inspected and cleaned without removing burner.

2) Control box is probably bad.
There are 2 types of control boxes for older-style energy smart water heaters.
You will need model number and serial number from label on side of tank to order from Whirlpool.

3) This older-type energy smart water heater is probably discontinued by AO-Smith, American, State, Craftmaster, Reliance water heater group that makes Whirlpool and Kenmore water heaters.
New generation energy smart offers interface with home automation and/or non-existent smart grid.
Older energy smart only offered potential interface with non-existent smart grid.

Register water heater

Whirlpool water heaters are made by AOSmith company, which owns American, Reliance, State, Craftmaster and makes water heaters for Kenmore and Whirlpool.
These are good heaters.

Register Whirlpool product at following link:
http://www.whirlpoolwaterheaters.com/support/warrantyreg.aspx

It is not necessary to register product for warranty to be valid.
And if you move to new home and take water heater, then warranty does not follow. So it might be disadvantageous to register product in that circumstance.

You can see brand, model number, and serial number located on label on side of tank.
The serial number is unique and is key for warranty coverage, even if you lost receipt. Serial number shows year of manufacture in first two digits.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Find-Age-of-water-heater.pdf

It is not necessary to register water heater for warranty to be valid, as long as following applies: Original owner, single-family non-commercial residential installation, and installation that conforms to instructions shown in product manual, and water heater is maintained as shown in product manual.

If you purchased extended warranty, then remember the warranty is carried by a third party that also requires same as above.
And the warranty may be pro-rated, rendering it nearly valueless in later years.

Typical water heater warranty:
First year of warranty covers tank-parts-labor.
After first year, the warranty shrinks to tank-parts.
The math shows that shorter warranty tank has greater percentage of full coverage.
Convert ordinary 6 year tank into 9-12-15 year tank by maintaining water heater. Especially cleaning air intake located on bottom of tank, inspecting anode rod to prevent rusting, and following maintenance schedule shown in product manual.

Pilot will not stay light but will turn on and work properly

When having a problem with pilot and burner, the place to start is troubleshoot section in your manual.
Whirlpool is probably made by Craftmaster which I believe is a Rheem company, and Rheem makes a number of different models.
Some models have specific manuals and others have generic manuals.
Open Rheem water heater page and click on water that matches your water heater. On page that opens, click on tab that says 'specs' and then download manual.
http://www.rheem.com/Products/tank_water_heaters/gas_water_heaters

If none of those water heaters look like yours, open following link to help identify company website and download manual. Craftmaster website does not have instruction manuals.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-manufacturers.html

All gas water heaters require periodic maintenance.
Some require yearly maintenance.
The burner parts require cleaning.

Whirlpool 40 gallon energy smart elecrtic water heater. The control board binks once, by the panel means system start up failure, but we still have hot water, but every time we use the hot water it starts...

The evidence points to a control malfunction.
Call Whirlpool for assistance: 1-877-817-6750
You will need your model number and serial number located on label on side of tank.
Serial number is required because models change as the technology evolves.

Open following link to read product details about the Energy Smart, and download typical manual.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Whirlpool-Energy-Smart-electric.html

Note: Energy Smart water heater requires 10 gauge wire and 30 amp breaker.

Typical energy smart manual shows: 1 flash is start-up error, which indicates 'Power ON with no water in tank.'
This is not possible because at least the upper element would burn out, if not both elements.
If upper element burns out, this water heater will not make any hot water, since it is wired for ordinary non-simultaneous operation.
There cannot be air inside the tank since your hot water faucet is not spewing air.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-it-works.html

Also be aware that model numbers change.
Read following account of fellow who replaced control board on his 4-year-old energy smart, and how he discovered wires are reversed on newer control boards. Be sure to ask Whirlpool about this possibility, in the event they say control board is faulty and send you new board:

Where do I find the serial number for a Rheem Stellar gas storage hot water unit

Serial number should be on label on side of tank.
Labels contain information like model number, tank capacity and BTUs
First 4 digits of serial number are date of manufacture: for example 0604 is June 2004
Take photo of label for easy reading and for your records
