SOURCE: On start up of my Toshiba Satellite L505-S5990

Hi ilikepie2,

Unfortunately Error F3-F100-0003 means that the hard disk has failed. You need to replace the hard drive of your computer. If you can get someone (local tech) to check if they can still recover the files on it, it would be better.

Thanks for using Fixya.

That error is a hardware error, either the recovery disc has errors or the hard drive has bad sectors. The bad sectors may be logical sectors that will prove OK if you run chkdsk/f and the boot sector may repair if you run the command 'fixboot'
Hope that helps.

Error code F3-F100-0004

I suspect, you have been trying to restore to factory settings. This does appear to be a common problem with Toshiba Satellites. You should always make recovery discs if they are not supplied with the PC, a lesson you will now have learned.

You have two choices, you can either contact Toshiba and see if it is possible to purchase a set of Recovery Disks for you particular laptop. Or, you borrow (as you have already thought of) a Windows 7 OS disc. Keep in mind this disc must be the same version of Windows 7 that is written on your Product Key sticker. This will probably be stuck underneath the laptop. If you try to use a different version your product key will not work.

If you can get the discs from Toshiba this will save you the time and trouble of having to download and install all the drivers that you need for a clean install as they will be included on the discs. Hope this helps.

My laptop will not reboot. I was trying to set it back to an earlier date and it crashed. I get an error - F3-F100-0004. How do I repair it?

A Google search for this error code suggests that this may (or may not) be a disk problem. You should attempt to recover your data files (photos, documents, videos) if they are not backed up somewhere else.

A competent tech should be able to boot from a Linux-based recovery CD or DVD and recover your files. A slightly harder way is to pull out the drive and recover the files using another computer running Windows or Linux.

The machine is certainly repairable. If there is a service contract or warranty, have the supplier do the repair AFTER you have secured any files you wish to keep. The manufacturer will almost certainly erase everything in the repair process.

Error : F3-F200-0002

This is actually a problem with the recovery disk. Your notebook comes with a recovery partition that will allow you to perform a recovery without discs. I would suggest you hold "0" when you power on the computer, and then follow the prompts. You can as well call the Toshiba support for assistance.

Maybe caused by damaged recovery media or faulty hard drive. To reinstall your laptop to the factory settings / "out of the box" settings, please follow these steps. It worked for me, and should work for you.

1) Hold down the power button for 10 (ten) seconds to switch off your machine.

Please note: Holding down the power button on the machine forces it to switch off. Any unsaved data will be lost.
2) Press and hold the 0 (zero) key and at the same time, tap the power button once to switch on your notebook.
3) When the machine Starts beeping; release the 0 key.
4) When prompted by the warning screen; select Yes to continue with the system recovery.
5) Select Recovery of Factory Default Software; click Next.
6) Select Recover to out-of-box state. Click Next again.
7) Click Next to Start recovery.
