Question about Compaq iPAQ Connection Point CP-2W (241274-001) 802.11b Wireless Access Point

2 Answers

No Signal A freind of mine recently gave me an extra CP-2W wireless router he had for my new home. I've set it up and updated the firmware according to the manual. The router itself seems to be working and the computer connected directly to it by ethernet can access the internet but none of my wireless devices can access the router or the internet. I have performed the set-up process numerous times and have gone threw the manual over and over but can find no reason that it shouldn't be working. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Try updating the firmware on the router. You need to log into the router using

Username =admin
password = admin or the word password.

Once in the routers home page check for updates and download and install. Also be sure any firewalls are not blocking the signal.
While your in the router set up a personal wep key for your wireless security.
There is a possibility your lossing signal to outside intruder.

We've been using the MN-500 router for over 5 years without issue. Recently, the signal strength seems to have diminished. Router is in the basement. We used to be able to access from our first and second...

This is a common problem. There are two ways on how to fix this. First, update the firmware of your router. You can download the firmware from Microsoft download site.

Before you install the router's firmware, you must do a hard reset. Press the reset button at the back of the router for 30 seconds then unplug the power for another 30 seconds before you plug it back in.

Access the router's admin page through and look for firmware update settings.
After successfully updating the firmware, you must do a hard reset again. Reset for 30 seconds then power cycle it.

In fixing low signal strength, you'll just need to change the wireless channel on the router's admin page. Access the router's admin page through and look for wireless tab, change the channel to 11 and save the settings. If you have cordless phone you need to relocate its base away from the router.

Setting a secuirty access password on Compaq IPAQ router CP-2W

You want to setup WPA, assuming the access point is new enough.

WPA with a Pre Shared Key (aka PSK) is what you want. This is often called WPA Home or WPA Lite or something similar. All a PSK is really is a password.

Look for this on your wireless setup menu. You should be able to set it there. There's a small chance this is on the advanced screen, although most have it on the normal screen. If you have a really old access point, you're likely going to only be given WEP options. If so, spend the $50 for a new one. You'll be money ahead in the long run... Since this is an 802.11b access point, that's almost certainly the case...

Set up

Hi Rbosley,

I found the real manual here,

Second one down.
Are you using Cable, or DSL. DSL requires you to setup a PPPOE connection, putting in your Username and password for you DSL connection.
Are there any other routerrs on the network? Just making sure you are not trying to use the router then there is one already one on the work.
I would suggest your use the reset button on the back, resetting it to defaults. That way, you should be able to plug in your modem to the WAN port, plug your computer into the LAN port.
Then restart the modem, wait 2 min, power up the router, wait 2 min, and startup the PC. Make sure your IPs are set to automatically get IPs and DNS. The router's DHCP should supply them to your PC.
DSL requries you setup a PPPOE connections, which really just consists of selecting the pppoe option, putting in the infomation, and the doing all the rebooting.

It you still are having issues, get back with us!

No signal

Is the wireless switch of your pC on? if it is, then try to reboot your PC and the router. You should see one. Check also if the SSID broadcast of your router is enabled.
