Question about Acer Aspire 5742G

Cannot open volume for direct access in command prompt

I'm having problems with my laptop with win 7 home 64-bits. A couple of days ago I got the blue screen saying "umountable_boot_volume", and now I can't turn the computer on without the start-up repair tool. Have tried safemode and low-res mode, but nothing helps me get my computer on. Found different solutions online, and am now booting from a repair cd a friend of mine made me. I'm in the command prompt window, and when I run chkdsk it finds no problems, but still can't turn it on. I try the command chkdsk /r and /f, but then I get the message "cannot open volume for direct access." What can be the problem, and how do I fix it?

SOURCE: Acer 5100 Vista Boot up issue

hi, i have had 2 acer 5100 notebooks for nearly 2 years now bolth had failed, short time after warranty was up took me many hours to get them working again.. did acer not put the recovery on another partition on your hard drive? if you open my computer-drive c-then you may see a recovery drive, named acer or recovery. do you have the option at post for recovery mode(push f10)? look for this. other than that you have to buy the recovery disks. or buy an operating system. my favorite phrase comes to mind-don't let an update bring you down. i hope this helps you, good luck!

Use another computer to copy the files from the CD over to a USB flash drive, if you have got one. Then start up you Acer and go into the BIOS settings (press F1,F2 or DEL a few times before the windows logo appears) Then go to boot device priority or something similar, and choose the priority to boot from a USB HDD higher than your Hard drive. Just to be sure, put it as number one. Save the settings and exit, and restart your computer with the USB flash drive with the files inside in your computer.

SOURCE: Unable to boot my acer laptop.

Hi Mike,

Thank you for contacting Fixya. This is Anil.

I understand that your computer is infected with Malware and now the computer is not booting to normal mode.
I can uderstand how frustrating this could be and I assure I will try be best to resolve this issue.
From the statement I understand that it may happen due to hardware failure, BIOS mismatch or due to static charge. Let us try the basic troubleshooting. Turn Off the Computer, remove all the devices attached to the computer, the power cable and battrey, now holdon the power button for 15 secs (make sure adpater and battery are uplugged) it will drain out all the static charge. Now, restart the computer and keep on tapping F2 (some computers "DEL or Delete" key), you will enter to BIOS setup utility, press F9 (click "Yes", if you are prompted) and then press F10 (Click "Yes", if you are prompted), it will restart the computer to Normal mode. If still it is not booting to normal mode, then we have to perform a full system recovery & it is a distructive process as you will loose all the datas on the computer. To do so, Turn Off the computer, now as soon as you hit the power button, keep on holding "Alt" key & keep on tapping "F10" key, i.e Alt+f10, it will open the recovery console, select full factory restore and follow onscreen instruction. NOTE: This will erase all the datas on the computer.

I believe the above resolution should resolve the issue, however, if the issue still persists, please contact us. We will be glad to help you.

Thank you

Regards,

Anil.B.R

If the BIOS does not detect the hard drive, the computer won't boot up because the Windows operating system is on the hard disk.
Try re-seating the hard drive to make sure it makes proper connection, when you boot up again and the hard drive is not detected then most likely the hard drive has failed.
To get the Acer operating again, replace the hard drive, install Windows and the Acer device drivers plus your programs.

You can download the drivers from the Acer WEB site using a different computer and then install them on your notebook. Make sure you select the model of your laptop and the XP or Vista version of the drivers you that require and it matches the Windows version that is installed on your laptop. Screen saver dosent work win 7/ 64

You could going to microsoftfixit homepage and check if there is a tool that might fix that or associated screen saver problems.

First i'd open a command prompt as administrator and the type or paste this " sfc/scannow " then hit enter. after scanning your computer it will replace all missing operating system files from your recovery partition that can be seen in the my computer folder.

Maybe try Wise 360 or free windows registry repair (both free) and see if there is a temp setting or registry problem

What are the proper steps to take in upgrading a laptop from windows home premium 32bit, to win 7 professional 64 bit ?

First you need to know if the laptop is compatible with the 64 bit system. I bet it might not be and even if it is, then make sure all 64 but drivers are available for all the hardware you intend to use.
The 64 bit OS is of little use as there is so little software to take advantage of it as of yet. Drivers for harware is a good reason to not put 64 bit on any computer- laptops are even more slow in this development of drivers.

Go to the website www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/ and download the windows 7 upgrade advisor to check the components which are not compatible and also check whether your Processor support 32 bit or 64 bit OS.If it does not support the 64 Bit Os ,the only option will be to set up the machine using 32 bit OS win7.

I have a problem in downloading sound driver for window7

There are no officially supported Windows 7 drivers for the Acer Aspire 5570 notebook. However, the Vista drivers should work just fine.

If you don't know whether you have 64 bit or 32 bit Windows 7, then please follow these steps.

1. Press Win+R to open the Run command.
2. Type "MSINFO32" into the dialog box and press enter.
3. Look for item "System Type" and note whether the value is x64 or x86. (x86 means you have a 32 bit OS)

Regardless of whether you have 32 bit or 64 bit Windows 7 follow these instructions:
1. Go ahead and download 32 bit Windows Vista drivers by following the link: Acer Aspire 5570 Audio Drivers

2. Save file to the Desktop for easy access.

3. Extract ZIP file to Desktop.

4. Open the extracted folder.
5. Right click on the file "Setup" and select "Properties".
6. Select the Compatibility tab and check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)". Click OK.

7. Double click the "Setup" file to run the installer. If the installer completes, then restart the computer and play a music file to see if you have sound.

If the installer fails, then follow the next set of directions:
1. Press Win+R to open Run command.
2. Type "DEVMGMT.MSC" and press enter.

3. Look for a device that has a yellow exclamation point next to it. If you have more than one, look for a device that says "Multimedia Audio Controller".
4. Right click on the device that has a yellow exclamation point next to it and select Properties.
5. Click the Driver tab and select Update Driver.
6. Click "Browse my computer for driver software".
7. Select "Browse...".
8. Browse to the extracted folder and select the "Vista" folder if you have the 32 bit version of Windows. If you have the 64 bit version of Windows, then select the "Vista64" folder. If Windows tells you there are no compatible drivers after step 9, then select the WDM folder and repeat step 9.
9. Click OK and then click Next.

10. Ignore all errors that Windows may give you and install the driver, restart the computer, and try to play a music file.

Good luck, post back if you have any difficulties, and thanks for using FixYa,

Error 1722

You may encounter the following error on installation:
Installation ended prematurely because of an error
when trying to install 32-bit or 64-bit qlikView on Windows 7. With or without UAC (User Access Control), installation fails.
Suggestions to (re-)install vbscript.dll using regsvr32 vbscript.dll in the c:\windows\system32 (64-bit equivalent) directory didn't help.
On execution of the installer, c:\program files\common files\wise installation wizard has a new msi added that includes the full installer for the qlikView application.
Installation worked by opening your command window (Start -> (All Programs) -> Accessories ->Command Prompt (right-click and run as Administrator) by calling the msi, above, with a few switches:
msiexec /a WISB3[...].msi
That worked.
The command-line registry fix as below
reg delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11CF-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}" /f
didn't do anything...

Scanner provided worked ok with XP SP3 but will no work with Win 7 64 bit even when adjusted for compatibility with XP

Without the Make and Model, I cannot link you directly to the patch/download you may need, but I can offer this. Go to the Manufacturer web site, choose support, enter your scanner model number and be Absolutely CERTAIN the Driver is STRICTLY for 64bit.

I reversed 3 of my own, family, computers back to 32 bit, because 64 was too much like work. I was doing full time support in my own home, every day a new problem or 6. Microsoft Windows 7, 64 bit; is a GREAT Operating system IF you use 3 or 4 programs, per day, every day and nothing more. Bearing in mind the 3 or 4 programs must be 64 bit programs.

It reminds me of Apples early days; when they had a dynamite Operating System, fast, virus free, but try to find a program for it.

All of your programs have to be 64 bit

How to run turbo c++in vista 64 bit os

You can run Turbo C++ 3.0 on Windows XP 64 bit , Vista 32 bit and 64 bit OS (in full screen)

Install the software DOSBox ver 0.72 (Freeware) from the link below (Direct Link)

http://prdownloads.so urcef orge.net/dosbox/DOSBox0.72-win 32-in staller.exe?download

Before going to the details u have to create a folder (any name will do).

Here we name it as Turbo

Copy the TC into the Turbo folder

Run the DOSBox 0.72 from the icon located on the desktop or from the location of the installation folder

Then u are presented with two screens which look like the command prompt in Windows

Now u are presented with two screens. One with a Z prompt. U can ignore the other screen.

There type the following commands at the command prompt [Z]:

Mount [Type in any alphabet that u wish except z] [Type the source of the turbo C] press enter

For example (Type in the following commands after the Z prompt):

Z: mount d c:\Turbo\ [The folder TC is present inside the folder Turbo]

* Now u should get a message which says: Drive D is mounted as a local directory c:\Turbo\ ***

C:\> cd TC [The contents inside the folder Turbo gets mounted as a virtual drive (Here D drive)
