Problem is an obstructed gas oriface. The burners light from the burner closest to the pilot assembly out like a dominoe effect. The explosion is because the gas has to make its way over to the pilot from a further burner thus filling the firebox full of gas before it ignites. This blockage is most commonly from a spider web inside the oriface itself. Pull the burner tray, remove the orifaces from the tray and look through each one cleaning them out with a toothpick from the backside. The orifaces should be threaded on the gas line coming off the gas valve (looks like a silver box inside the front panel)

SOURCE: Pentair Minimax NT 400 heater. fan keeps coming

Sounds like the controller is the problem. This is the circuit board that has the display and controls on it. You can swing that panel open and try tapping on the white plastic cover the controller is under that. This might get the fan relay to release but you will have to replace the controller it will stick again

SOURCE: E04 comes on after fan purge cycle-Pentair minimax nt pool heater

This is a fan falure code. It can mean the fan has problems (not likley if the fan goes and isn't labored) You have a sensor in your exaust (probally not this if you don't get a good start) The culperet is probally in the negetive pressure sensor. This is a 2-3 inch disc with wires going to the controls and a rubber tube going to the fan. Pull the tube from the fan and make sure the fan fitting is clear (poke with a tooth pic) Be sure their are no kinks in the hose. If the heater is 4 years old the diaprahm could be bad in the pressure sensor. Check the other things first but this is probally your problem. Good luck, hope this helped.

How do i install an igniter in minimax

Pentair 472604 Igniter Replacement MiniMax NT STD Pool and Spa Heater

The ignitor is simple to replace, It is either a spark ignitor or a Hot surface ignitor. The above link will take you to a picture of the Hot surface ignitor, it is normal held onto the bottom of the burner tray, at right about the middle, by 1 or 2 sheet metal screws.

If a Spark style ignitor/electrode, then the bottom link is the one want to look at. Again, held in place the same way as above description.

I have a Pentair MiniMax NT. I am getting ERR on the display but I can't seem to get the door open. I have tried turning the single screw that locks the left and right door but it won't unlock.

sometimes the door is just stuck. try pulling the door as you turn the locking screw. sometimes you need to use a flat head screw driver to help the door open as you turn the screw back and forth

I have a 6 yr old Pentair Minimax NT heater that just started leaking water. Is it worth it to repair it, or should I just buy a new one?

Buy a new one. I spent $650 beginning of season to replace the manifold that was leaking and now it is broken. Again. Had since new and every year it breaks, sometimes twice. 6 years of dealing with this piece of junk.

This heater is a problem child and no longer made thank goodness. The company that produced it have always been good until this model that gave them more headaches than they wanted.

is there an error code?

1. Ignitor (about the only problem most homeowners can solve themselves).
2. Gas Pressure.
3. Combustion air flow. (indoor only)
4) faulty heat sensor

Other possible fixes
A modification to the airflow path could be required. This should be done by a trained technician. I have had to do this on several heaters in order to get them to work reliably. They can work with the pentair factory or local reps to execute this.
Stickiy Gas valve
voltage drop somewhere in the system

If it stopped immediately I would suspect it is most likely caused by a gas pressure problem being likely to cause the heater not to rectify and sometimes explosive combust upon ignition ). The air flow could be enough to close the switch but upon ignition it bounces the air flow switch out, and shuts the heater down

I feel that beacuse of the multiple areas that need to be checked for correct voltage and pressure you need to abandon DIY and call in a tech. Preferably a pool type tech as they have better tools and are usually cheaper .

You could be going around in circles for weeks trying to get it fixed, and unless you have the tools and the understnding of what and where to look it can't be done through a forum.

As a last ditch you could try a 'kludge" and that is to turn it all off and leave for a few hours and reset it.The risk there is that if it's hot then a few things could melt as there is no fan action. Might fix the initial problem but cause a secondary. The pool guy is the better option

Thanks for using FIXYA
