Question about Sony Grand WEGA KDF-50WE655 50" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

I have blue botches ( ghosts ) appearing on the tv

The tv is 3 years old and blue blotches and lines are appearing all over the screen

Our Sony Grand Wega KDF-50WE655 is just a little older than the one described and we are experiencing the same problems. However, ours went through a progression of blue blotches (ghosts), blue tinging around the screen perimeter and has finally settled to an oval opening in the middle of the screen where the "normal" picture will come through, but with a faint yellow tinge. Is this a common problem for this model and age TV? What does it require to fix it?

This problem is caused by a bad optical block. Sony has extended the warranty for this problem but the extension is only valid until December 2008 so you must act now. You can find instructions for obtaining service and additional information here:

Hi , it seems you are experimenting a light engine problem. Here's how your tv works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLLHnQ4y-wo Basically there's 3 LCD chips that create the colors and image by blending together. When these chips start to melt you will get those blue spots, pixilation even vertical lines. You will need to replace the light engine replacing the bulb will not solve your issue. Have a blessed one!

Ghosting of the image

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...
