You might need to update your PS3..

How to Update Your Ps3 Firmware With Your Computer

How to Update Your Ps3 Firmware With Your Computerthumbnail Update Your Ps3 Firmware With Your Computer

So you want to update your ps3, but you don't have your ps3 connected to the internet, well no fear in this article I will show you how to update your ps3's firmware by using your computer.

Instructions
Things You'll Need

Internet
J-Drive

1 First go to this website,http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/SystemUpdates/PS3
and click on the download now button just under the big ps3 and save it to your desktop or any other place that you can get to the file easly.

2 Now get into your j-drive and make a new folder named "PS3".

3 Now click on the PS3 folder and make a new one called "UPDATE".

4 Now put the downloaded update file ito the "UPDATE" folder that you just made.

5 Take the j-drive to your ps3 and plug it into the usb port.

6 Once done with that go to settings, system update, update via mass storage device.

7 Follow the directions on the screen to complete the update.

8 Once done you cna go back to playing on your ps3.

Tips & Warnings

You can do this for every update that you do
Its free to do
If it don't work you did it wrong

Or you could try this too

You can try the steps below. Its from PlayStation Forum:

1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

If the above steps still does not solve the problem, then I think will have to update your Ps3.

Update your PS3 (in the settings menu the 1st option).

Go on the internet browser on the PS3 then go on the menu press triangle then on one of them there are delete cookies and the delete the others as
well as cookies.

You could also try this as well: put the PS3 on then press the eject button (with no disc in) then hold it and switch the PS3 off at the back with your finger on the eject button still holding it, then put it back on and the fan test should be working this may cool it down. It might be over heating.

But if your problem is not still solved, then maybe you should call sony for further assistance.

I wish you good luck

If i was to rebuild my ps3 database to make it faster on mostly the game updates how long would the download take?

Your PS3 is going to download something at the same speed whether the database is loaded or not. This is determined by your Internet Speed. Your router may also affect the download speed if their are certain security safeguards in place.

I would recommend that if you want to see how long it takes to download something, do an internet speed test. A good website to check your internet speed is http://www.speedtest.net/

When i turn on the Playstation 3 the screen goes all red and says a serious virus has occured, contact technical help for assistance. What do I do?

One way to fix red screen of death on PS3 is to update the firmware. You need to download the latest firmware from Sony's website. Prepare a USB memory stick, and create a folder called PS3 on it. Inside this PS3 folder, create a folder called UPDATE. Down load the PS3 firmware into the UPDATE folder.
Connect the USB memory stick to your PS3. Hit and hold the power button on PS3 until you here 3 beeps. You may seen the menu screen on PS3. If not, press and hold the power again. From the onscreen menu, you should be able to install the new firmware. Update your PS3 and see what happens. No change? Go to the next method.
The other way of PS3 red screen fix is to reformat your PS3 hard drive. There is high possibility that your PS3 hard drive has been corrupted which causes red screen. Therefore you have to reformat it, and restore the system to build the new database.
Firstly, backup all your personal files onto an external USB drive. Take out the your HDD and reformat it using your PC. OR reformat on you PS3 too. Press and hold the power button on PS3 until you here 2 beeps. Then you got a menu where guide you format the HDD.
After reformatting, reboot the PS3, there should be a screen asking you the restore the system. Follow the instructions and accept all the default settings. After that check to see how your PS3 works.
Give these two fixes a go. You have nothing to lose.
There are also chances that none of them works for you. If that is the case, you have to call Sony. They may ask you to send it back to it and return it after 4-6 weeks. But some lucky guys may have a replacement of a new PS3.
OR get yourself a PS3 repair Guide. This is also a good idea, for it costs little but benefits in the long term. Because a good repair guide will provide detailed fixes to most of the PS3 problems, including PS3 red screen.
No matter which way you choose, wish you a success at last.
If you don't want to give $150 to Sony service center or wait for 4-6 weeks to fix your PS3 up. Here is your step by step professional Rob Sheffield's PS3 Fix Guide. Read the review for more.

Ps3 update 2.5

This is a major problem caused by this update, some wont read discs, other wont load the menus. Consult the Sony website for updates or solutions but a popular solution is to enter recovery mode on the ps3, which restarts ps3 totally but formats the ps3, losing data. If you think this is viable, i have linked to the process but here it is:

Turn off Ps3
Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again
Once the system has been shutdown, re-press your finger until you hear dual beeps
When you hear the 2 beeps remove finger power button
You will be asked to plug in your controller and press the ps button
This will enter recovery menu, which is:

Recovery menu
- restart system
- restore default settings
- restore file system
- rebuild database
- restore ps3
- system update

Each setting does a different function, consult the manual or PS3 site for consequences but be warned: YOU RISK LOSING ALL DATA IF YOU DO THIS. BACK IT UP. This is not a proven fix for this issue as it is the update which seems to have totalled many PS3's but has proven effective and worked when my discs stuck on title screens, i selected first restart system, then restore default settings the 2 times i have done it and it fixed the ps3 but i lost all of my data.

That's the best way to do over your PC to your USB. Create a folder on the storage media in which to save the update data.
Using a PC, create a folder named “PS3” on the storage media or USB device. Within the PS3 folder, create a folder named “UPDATE”.
  • Download the update data and save it in the UPDATE folder created in step 1. Select here to start the download.
Notice
Be sure to save the update data as noted below. If the data is not saved in the correct way, the PS3™ system will not recognize the update data.
  • Location: Save in the “PS3” folder > “UPDATE” folder
  • File name: Save as file name “PS3UPDAT.PUP”.
    Update procedure
Notices
  • Do not turn off the PS3™ system or remove the storage media or USB device during an update. If an update is cancelled before completion, the system software may become damaged, and the system may require servicing or exchange.
  • The power button on the PS3™ system front is not active during an update.
  1. Insert the storage media or USB device that contains the update data in the PS3™ system.
  2. From the home menu, select (Settings) > (System Update), and then press the button
The folder name must be in all uppercase letters.
  • Location: Save in the “PS3” folder > “UPDATE” folder
  • File name: Save as file name “PS3UPDAT.PUP”.

  3. Select [Update via Storage Media], and then press the button.

The system automatically searches for and finds the update data saved on the storage media or USB device.

  4. Start the update data.
    network_update.jpg

Press the button to start the update data. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.

  5. Confirm that the update was successful.
After the update has been completed, go to (Settings) > (System Settings) > [System Information]. If the System Software field displays the version number of the update, the update was successful.
Hint
You can delete the update data from the storage media or USB device after the update has been successfully completed.

Download the system update from another place. Once the file on the PS3 is corrupted or incomplete it will only try that file.

You can install the system update using your PC by downloading the update to a USB stick or Memory Stick.

Get the system update here.
