Question about Carrier 38CKC042 Air Conditioner

Hi- Can not tell if my unites are straight cool / heat or a heat pump.

If my Carrier model is a 38ckc04830 is it a heat pump without aux heat or is it just straight heat / cool ?

Another easy way is to look at your stat. if it says heat cool off then odds are its a straight cool. if it says heat,off , cool and emerg heat its a heat pump. ,or turn it on in heat at max heat. does outside unit run? if yes then its a heat pump if no then its straight cool with strips. good luck

If you look inside the condenser unit outside,see if you see the big reversing valve,if not it is a straight cool,heat, the heat strip ins in the air handler so you would have to take the side panel off and look for the heat stripe,my the way heat pumps also have a aux.heat stripe just in case it does not get cold enough outside,hope this helps you-mike

No. This is strictly a gas package unit, not a heat pump. the condenser fan motor should NOT run when their is a call for heat from the thermostat. The condenser fan only runs with the compressor on a call for cooling. Hopefully the compressor is not running @ the same time, but if it is, it would make sense that the contactor for the compressor & condenser fan motor is stuck closed OR the low voltage cooling wires are shorted straight to a 24Volt control wire.

Hey, I purchased your Honeywell RTH2510 Thermostat, but I didn't even think to label the wires when I took the old thermostat off. Upon installation of the new Thermostat (2510) the Air Conditioning...


The connections that you really need to reference would be at the air handler itself. That would tell you which wires go outside to the heat pump and which wires go to the air handler. I can however give you some basics that may help.

Heat Pump Wiring
Terminals/Colors/Function
R- Red- 24v power supply. (Usually a jumper between RC/RH)
G- Green- Fan
W- White- Heat (Sometimes W1-W2, first or second stage heat)
Y- Yellow- Cooling (Same applies as above i.e. Y1-Y2)
C- Common (Most people use blue unless it is used for B terminal and sometimes cooling on older 4 wire systems.
B/O- Reversing Valve for heat pump. Either powered heating or powered cooling, depending on system installed.
Aux- Also used for heat.

Note: Considering that the installer had their own way to run all wires, use different wires, connections, etc. This is just a reference to common wiring in the field.

How the most common system is hooked up:
Thermostat:
Red wire goes to R terminal
Yellow wire goes to Y1 or Y2 terminal
Green wire goes to G terminal
White wire usually goes to W1 or W2 terminal
Orange or Black wire goes to B/O terminal
Brown wire usually goes to Aux terminal
Blue wire goes to C terminal, unless its being used as stated above.

This is without using a fossil fuel kit or zone control board.

Where do they go from the thermostat?
Red
goes to the air handler transformer or board and goes outside to heat pump to power low voltage controls.
Yellow wire goes straight outside to Y terminals on heat pump unless going to a board inside first.
Green goes to the air handler fan relay.
Common goes to the air handler and outside to heat pump.
Black or Orange will go outside to heat pump terminals for reversing valve.
White usually goes outside to heat pump,and inside to air handler. Will explain reason further down.
Brown will go to the air handler to the heat relay for the emergency heat.

On a call for heat, with a powered cooling system (more common).
The R, Y, and G terminals energize, sending a signal to start the blower and pull in the contactor outside. Note that the Y terminal is usually cooling, but since this is a powered cooling system, the reversing valve is not energized, causing the system to run in heat mode. If you have powered heating, the reversing valve terminal will energize also. Depending on thermostat, if you set the temp substantially higher than room temp, it may kick on the emergency/aux heat to quickly raise the room temp. On a call for emergency/aux heat, the R, G, and E/Aux terminals are energized, turning on the electric/gas heat instead of the heat pump. This comes in handy since the heat pump can only pull so much heat from outside before its not enough to properly warm the house, usually around 30 degrees outside temp. If you are running the heat pump and the system goes into "defrost", the outside unit will send a signal back to the air handler, through the white wire I mentioned earlier, to tell the emergency/aux heat to come on while it is in defrost mode, providing heat whenever needed.

Again, this is just a reference guide to some basic wiring, but hopefully it will tell you where the problem is or at the least, give you a good start. There are variables in which things can change the wiring like a zoning system or fossil fuel kit. Even then, you should be able to get pretty close. Hope this helps and Happy Holidays!

How to do the wiring between airhandling unit and condencing unit


is it a heat pump? does it have electric heat in it? is it straight cool with furnace? all things need to be known before i can answer this.

Hi, to tell if your unit is a heat-pump or not, if the indoor unit is not gas fired, it is a split system heat pump. If it uses gas or propane gas, its a split system gas/elect unit. Look at your thermostat also. It should have aux heat, emergency heat on it also. Maybe not both, but you will know if you have a heat pump. Please don't forget to rate me. Please be kind, as I know you will. Just remember, no gas, its a heat pump, gas fired furnace indoors, its not a heat pump.

I have a direct vent hi efficiency furnace. All


Check the condensate pump if it is full of water and does not come on that will shut the unit down. And might need a new pump. high efficiency furnaces condensate to squeeze the last amount of heat out of the unit. Seen this problem before. But not being there is a little chance that, that is the problem. let me know and we can go from there. okay ken

I have a carrier air/heating unit with pump. It has 8 wires. Brown,blue, white, yellow, green, black, orange,and red. I'm trying to install honeywell thermostat. The wires from my unit are suppose to go...


Turn the power off to the air handler. Open the control cover. Write down what color wires go together at the wiring terminal. All 8 wires are probably not used.
Post the findings here.
In most cases,
E= brown-emergency heat
AUX=white-auxillary heat to supplement HP
Y= yellow-to compressor for heat or cool(hp)
G=green-indoor fan
O-orange-reversing valve on HP when energized in COOL
L=t-stat light(probably not used)
R=red-24v incoming power
B=black-reversing valve on HP when energized in HEAT
C=blue-common wire for 24v
Only one of the "O" or "B" will be used. Not both.

Carrier heat pump: aux heat does not seem to work


you have a heat pump which removes heat from outside air when it is too cold out below 30* the unit can no longer produce heat and electric strip heaters kick in

Make sure G from indoor unit goes to G on thermostat for fan continous fan, if that doesn't work and you have 24 volts to R and C then the t'stat is bad.
For 2nd stage heat or aux.heat, on the indoor unit you need to make sure the wire W2 from the indoor unit goes to W2 on t'stat.
You don't need any wires from W1on the indoor unit to W1 at the t'stat because with a York heat pump Y1 is the contactor which turns the compressor on and you will get 1st stage heat, and for cooling the t'stat will also bring on O which is the (reversing valve) or cooling changeover relay for the cooling mode.
C = common usually black wire
R = hot usually red wire
Y or Y1 = contactor
W1 = 1st stage heat not needed for heat pump
W2 = Aux. heat indoor heat
G = fan
O = Cooling changeover relay
B = Heating changeover relay
L = System monitor
E = Emergency heat relay

Replace Carrier tstatccshp01 builders standard thermostat with Honeywell rth7500 series and wiring not matching Does O wire go to Aux..? fan working but no cool air.


No... Aux. is auxiliary heat strip. This is usually a white or black wire its up to the choice of the installers preferance. O or orange wire. is used to the reversing valve on a heat pump. If you do have a heat pump there is a programing section inside the Honeywell t-stat. which should say heat pump or straight cool, then another section that will ask if you want the reversing valve to energize in heat or cool. most Heat Pump brands energize in cool the exception is Rheem and Ruud they energize in heat.
