Question about Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-F717 Digital Camera

Distorted Viewfinder Only In PIcture Mode

I am aware of the class action re: certain SOny CCD sensors but I do not belive that it is what I am experiencing. My F717 began acting strangely a few months ago. I noticed that occasionally when I would switch from the first program mode to playback, the camera would remain in the program (picture taking) mode. By re-switching, it would then go in to playback mode. Now, over the past few weeks the viewfinder and viewscreen is distorted in all modes EXCEPT movie mode. The viewfinder is faulty in two ways. One, it looks like wide bands of distorted color on a black field and taking a pic at this point records the same distorted color bars, OR, the viewfinder appears to be working ok until focus lock engages, then the viewfinder shows and overexposed image. At this point if I take the picture, the resulting image lacks contrast and is riddled with fine, evenly spaced, white horizontal lines. At first the problem would only occur duiring the first few minutes of power up but now it seems permanent

Yes, You are correct, it does not seem to be problem with the CCD. Insted it seems to be with shutter control or apparture control mechanism of the camera. Normaly there is one single cable carring signal to the shutter blade mechanism and the diaphram control. If this cable is damaged it shows the same symptoms as you have described in your mail. Get in touch with an expert camera repairer.

LCD kaput - anyone know of a panasonic recall?

The panasonic camcorder does not use the Sony CCD element. If the small viewfinder is showing the camera video, there's nothing wrong with the CCD imager. We have had numerous problems with the switch that controls the activation of the large LCD and the backlight inverter that powers it. When you open the LCD the small viewfinder should power down to conserve battery power. The large LCD should then illuminate, if not, shine a flashlight at the surface of the LCD and notice if the video is present, if so, the backlight or LCD harness is defective. Vertical lines in camera mode

The CCD Image Sensor is defective. I have one just like it. The CCD is the chip at the other end of the camera lens that "sees" the image. This model uses a CCD manufactured by Sony that is used in Sony models such as DCR-TRV250 and CCD-TRV138. Canon also uses this Sony CCD int their mini-dv models such as the ZR-60 and other ZR series models. Sony and Canon readily "own up" to this and if you go on their websites you will see that they will fix them for free. They even pay the postage both ways. We were on the phone today with Samsung and they deny any knowledge of the problem and want $150 for repair if I mail it to them. They also will sell me the part for $103! I wish you luck but it might take a class action suit to get them to do anything. I'd love to hear what Samsung tells you... Mike

Problem w/ JVC Digital Camcorder GR-D33US

can you playback movies made on it before??? if yes then you have a camera problem and could be a auto iris issue as someone put the camera in manual iris mode or the iris is stuck and a lite tap will usually dislodge the iris OR its the pan capacitor problem ..The pan cap problem is still happining because manufacturers are still using those crappy panasonic surface mounted caps in most camcorders and the less you use the camcorder the more they leak out and distroy the printed curcuit board. Sounds like your gonna need a expert to diagnoise this for you. Good Luck . proinfo@jvc.com and if thatdosent work try (800) 252-5722
