SOURCE: carbon monoxide detector err code

You are going to hate this as much as I did!
In the manual you will read this ..

Manual for Kidde Nighthawk C02 Detector
On page 13
----------------------------------
Unit Malfunction
In the rare event that your alarm malfunctions,
it will alert you with a short “chirp” and the red
LED will flash once every 30 seconds. The
digital model will display “Err” as shown in
Fig. 6.
Seven years after initial power up, this unit will "chirp" every
30 seconds to indicate that it is time to replace the alarm.
The unit will not detect CO in this condition. Please replace
immediately.

SOURCE: carbon monoxide is on

When a Carbon Monoxide Detector alarm goes off, you should follow the procedures that came with the manufacturer manual. Even when the alarm sounds, you cannot smell, taste, or see this dangerous silent killer known as Carbon Monoxide.

Have your house checked by your local fire department for possible levels of CO gas readings. If this all checks out, you can go online to Kidde Nighthawk website and find the manual for your Carbon Monoxide detector model.

Hopefully, you found your solution since you posted this question back in Dec, 2008. Go to my website to read industry information and to view most Brands and Models of Carbon Monoxide Detectors.

A reading of 218 should be treated as an emergency. When a Carbon Monoxide level reaches over 70 ppm, you should have a professional inspect and repair the appliance that is causing this issue.

Carbon monoxide levels above 70 ppm will cause headache, fatigue and nausea. Levels above 150 ppm can cause serious injury or death.

Read section 5 US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

I cook a lot and my mother thinks I should get a carbon monoxide detector. Is it really necessary?

If you are cooking a lot, especially using an oven it is really important to have a carbon monoxide detector. You'd be surprised at how many CM related deaths there are a year because people don't equip their homes with one.

Unfortuanely, you can't. The loud beep is in place to alert you to the issue so that you don't get carbon monoxide poisoning.
