SOURCE: Dishwasher does not clean dishes, soap does not fully go away

Water Inlet Valve

A dishwasher's water inlet valve is its most common part to fail. When your dishes are not being fully cleaned, quite often a faulty water inlet valve is to blame. Test your dishwasher's water inlet valve, and if it is no longer functioning as it should, you will have to replace it.

Heating Element

Water temperature is a key element in achieving clean dishes. A dishwasher's heating element is not designed to heat the water that enters it. Rather, the heating element is designed to maintain the heat of the water that enters the dishwasher. Its a good idea to run the hot water in your sink for a couple of minutes before you run the dishwasher. Just to make sure the water is nice and hot before it enters the dishwasher. If the water is unable to stay hot, it can adversely affect your dishwasher's cleaning ability.
Filter/Drain Grate

There is a filter in your dishwasher. Its function is to keep large particles of food and foreign objects away from the pump. Many of the newly-manufactured dishwashers have self-cleaning filters, and routine cleaning isn't a concern. However, some other dishw ashers need to have the filter removed and cleaned regularly. If the filter or grate is clogged or blocked with debris, it may interfere with the normal functioning of your dishwasher. Consult your owner's manual for specific directions for removing your dishwasher's filter and cleaning it.

  • . Detergent or Detergent Cup

It could just be that you aren't using enough soap to completely wash your dishes. Your dishwasher may be designed to dispense soap at two different times during the wash cycle. If you don't fill all of the detergent cups, then the diswasher will lose a cleaning cycle. Also, if you use a gel-type detergent, try switching to a powered kind. Powders tend to dissolve better in hot water. And don't buy in bulk. Detergents are most effective in the first two weeks. After that, they decrease in potency.
Alternatively, your dishwasher's detergent cup could be defective in some way. It is possible that it is gunked up full of built up detergent, and a thorough cleaning may be enough to get it working again. If that doesn't do the trick, you probably need to replace the entire detergent cup assembly. If your cup isn't even opening, My dishwasher detergent cup won't open.

    Cycle Selector Switch
Sometimes a dishwasher's cycle selector switch is the reason why dishes are not coming completely clean. Test your selector switch to determine whether or not it has become defective. If it has, replace it.

    Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. First of all please check the Water temperature by using a thermometer inside the dishwasher to measure the water temp. It should be as close to 125 degree F to 140 degree F as possible. Now try using the temperature boost feature if your dishwasher is equipped with this cycle feature and check if this will help your wash ability issues.

Now check the Powder soap by making sure that you store your soap in a dry environment and it is not stale and clumping together. Possibly try a different detergent like a liquid or gel. Also, make sure the dishes are loaded properly, or dishwasher is not overloaded.

To check the proper filling dishwasher will fill with water up to and around the heating element. If water is more below the heating element, you may have low water pressure or a problem with the fill valve. Try & listen if it sounds like it is spraying the water around with enough pressure.
For low water pressure, try to clean the screen at the entrance of the fill valve, sometimes the fill valve can fail and not allow the proper water into the dishwasher and may need to be replaced. And, check the spray arm and pump cover for splits or leaks

Low water fills are a very common trouble maker with today's dishwasher.

Please do rate this solution and revert for further assistance.

    Thanks

It appears your dispenser wax switch has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question

SOURCE: Have Kenmore Elite 665 11yrs old, bakes soap on

That seems like it's probably related to the recent ban on phosphates in dishwashing soaps. Quite a number of people have found that their dishwashers aren't working as well and are leaving spots and soap behind now that phosphates are not being used.
A little vinegar may help, but the best answer would be to use a water softener.

    Dishwasher not cleaning dishes

If it is a cheaper brand/model of dishwasher, you may have to rinse the dishes, especially if they have been sitting for a while. While there are dishwasher who are powerful enough to clean even crust off the dishes, most need to have the dishes rinsed off even just with cold water right after use....If you do not use alot of dishes per day and let the washer build up dishes after a few days then I would recommend a warm/hot water rinse even with a dish sponge and some soap. While some may think that this defeats the purpose of using a dishwasher, remember that a dishwasher is more sanitary that using a dish rag or sponge that had the opportunity to build up bacteria and other gunk over a period of time ;-)

Dishwasher does not clean dishes. Some soap remains in soap dish. Have tried on the enrgy saver cycle and 1 hour cycle.

    Hi jerry1413,

Firstly, make sure you are using powdered soap, and not the 3 in 1 tablets. The 3 in 1 Tablets only release certain parts of itself on certain temperatures, and because all dishwashers aren't alike, they won't have the best of results on all makes & models. Cycles aren't run the same way on every Make, and don't follow the same order either. Trust Me ;-) , stick to Powder.

Furthermore, check the following link for some advice and suggestions on getting your dishwasher to clean properly again:

    Kind Regards :-)

Dishwasher isn't cleaning at all. Scum left on all dishes. Water temp is hot. I know the phosphates have been taken out of the dish soaps, however, this is worse than just that

Mine too. I tried using biokleen soap, 1/2 T in each cup and vinegar in rinse. Worked better this time. Also check your drain. The govt regs are really making things hard.

Dishwasher does not clean. soap door does not open every time.

Well the 2nd part of your question is probably the the reason it doesn't clean. If the soap door doesn't open then the dishes will probably not be cleaned. So.. I would focus on why the door doesn't open first.. is it sticking from old soap residue? If so, clean the dispenser with white vinegar and cycle it a few times without detergent and use the hottest/sanitary setting.. Then make sure you are using an approved dishwashing detergent for yuour wash cycle. Add some detergent to the dispenser and try cycling it without any dishes .. does the door open? If no, then you need to resolve that first.. If it does open, try running a cycle with about 1/2 the normal dish load and see if the door opened and the dishes came out clean.. Routinely, check and clean the drain filter so you aren't redistributing the food sediment from the previous load all over the next load of dishes.. Hope that helps..

Dishwasher turns on, doesn't fill, goes through dry cycle then dries dirty dishes

I have worked with Sears on a similiar symptom on my unit. I was using solid tablets in the soap dispenser. After running a wash everything was luke warm and dirty. After repeating a few test I found out my soap dispenser door was not opening properly. Sear confirmed it with their one of their better techs.

The problem with door in my case is that the assy is plastic and has poor tolerances. The front doors on these units are lightweight (cheaper) and do not remain plumb which causes the soap assy to see torqing by the door frame and cover.

If your out of warranty you can try to replace to soap assy or loosen the door panel hardware and try to make sure the soap door freely flips open manually and electrically.

It aint pretty, but until its fixed mix your detergent with a half gallon of hot tap water and pour into the tank before closing the door to start a load. The unit will not overfill as the float switch will work normally.

The backstory is: These newer models are not as robust as units 10 years ago. The goal to meet energy star qualifications of the EPA has forced these manufacturers to use less elec. to heat water in the unit. Your starting water temp is a function of several things; the distance from the water heater, the temp outside, and the setting on your water heater. Most replacement units going into older homes have a problem getting water temps of 135 degrees, which what Sears says is required for these units to clean well.

So you have a couple of choices to get there; 1. Let you sink hot water run until the temp is at it's max before starting a load, 2. install a localized water heater near the unit, 3. raise the temp on your water heater and use more electricity than the unit saves, or
    4. disolve you detergent in hot water and pour it in before starting a load.

Choice no. 4 is what we have been doing and we do get a better wash quality. Ive been told by a factory person that even if my door opened properly, that unless the water temp is high enough, the phosphates in the soap just dont do their job and soap residue just builds up in the tank over time.

These units are fine, IF you can satisfy everything the factory requires of the installer and its not easy to realize water temp of 130+ degrees in alot of homes.

If your under extended warranty, Sears will replace the marginal door with another marginal door.

    Hope this helps. Take care.
