Question about Door Knobs, Handles & Hinges

Doorhandle forced when locked. now it will not open when unlocked

A heavy child locked my wife out of our house and when he tried to let her back in the house, he held onto the handle and put his entire weight on the handle. It is not a round knob type it, is the handle type. Now the door will not open when the handle is turned even though it is unlocked.

Most likely the door frame is out of alignment due to the force of the weight.
you can try to open the door from the opposite side. push instead of pull.
if that doen't work, use a nail and hammer, remove the pins from the hinges pop open the door off the frame. (have someone braced the door before you push it.)
once you have it open check the alignment of the door frame, and realign it as necessary.

You have the lever that goes from the key cylinder part of the lock through the striker portion of the locking assembly turned part way, either in the wrong direction or not turned enough in the right direction so if you take the inside portion of the lock off and pull the outside portion out of the door and rotate the lever to its proper position and then put if all back together in the correct sequence it should work properly.

We opened the door, now door won't close. The closer rod is locked open

Turn the screw in the end of the shaft (on the door end) counterclockwise to release all the pressure.Once it closes or slams shut, use that screw to adjust the closing speed. Other problem could be the stay open lock (the metal piece that slides along the shaft) could be all the way out keeping the door from closing. If it is just push on the door a bit then slide the lock plate all the way back to the end of the shaft, and the door will close.

The lock got flipped on the bedroom door. I am now locked out. The door knob has been removed but I cannot get the mechanism inside the door unlocked. How can I do this?

You are almost there. Take the knob containing the spindle and insert into the latch mechanism. Twist it and the lock button will pop out. Open the door. Put everything back together. NOTE: I just confirmed this using a lock mechanism in front of me as I answered this.

I live in a row house built in 1942. My linen closet door wouldn't shut, but a few weeks ago I forced the issue. It shut, but now I cannot get it up. Someone suggested taking the pins out of the hinges....

Hi Margaret. If you can post a picture that would be immensely useful. From your description I'd suggest you don't force it further because it is usually easy to damage the woodwork and/or the hinge. If you can get the screws out of the handle then a bit of wiggle and *gentle* force, may free what seems to be 'glued' in place. Tapping on the underside with the tip of a flat blade screwdriver may help.

How to unlock my door..i left my key inside?

try using a credit card or your license to slide between the stop and the door to try and push the strike back into the lock. Or, if the hinge pins are on he outside, you can take a screwdriver or something and pop the hinge pins out to remove the whole door.

If the opening is on the side, it probably comes off by pushing a small tool (pick or large paper clip) into the hole while turning the key. When you feel the pin move, pull on the knob and it should come off.

Bathroom doorknob stuck in locked position.

Hello,

I will tell you how to fix 'em. Open the Door Knob with a screw driver, gently pull aart the two knobs once open, then look for a long sliding rod, pull one knob away, twist the Knob untlil it is in unlock position, put them back together to test if it slips properly. If it does not, there is something preventing the rod from rotating freely. Try to ensure it rotates freely. Then screw back together :)

Doorknob sticks in 'lock' position-but no real 'lock' feature

If this is the lock part itself, try gradually loosening install screw enough to be able to manuver lock to work and if so slowly tighten as you test each time gradually. Please clarify problem more if need to.
