Sounds like a problem with the ram. double check and make sure it's secure, pull it out and reinstall it

My laptop won't start up normally. The fans and everything begin to turn and start when I press the power button, but within seconds, they start to slow down and eventually stop.

You did not post anything about make and model. This is kind of a guess.

My laptop has "battery saving" setting that operate the fan based on temperature. When I start up, the fan comes on and the computer checks itself, Then the fan slows down. Later when the laptop warms up, the fan speeds up. See if you have some power management scheme set that makes the fan run like this before you take it to the shop.

Your laptop should be under warranty.

I have a gateway dx 4870 desktop..the fans are running, but the power light does not light up when pressed and machine will not boot up. What gives?

I have an old dell dimension 2400 and if it is anything to go by, I once did a repair and i did not re-seat the processor correctly. It just did P.O.S.T and stoopted everythig except the fans. You should check that ALL cables, adapters and components are inserted firmly. They could have been dislodged by a fall, or if you or anyone has been inside the pc, they may not have not put it together properly. Basically, I added a new meaning to push everything down more. (~.^)

Fan on Dell M5030 Starts on startup and then shuts down but computer continues to boot

Lots of fans are variable speed. Meaning they spin faster when the computer is hot and slow down when not. It's most likely spinning down. If the fan was bad the computer will either shutdown or generate an error during BIOS and halt the boot process.

No picture, only sound when i turned it on, and then it shuts off. there are no lights indicating anything

Unplug set first and wait--plug back and after set boots up see what happens.

Remove next the lamp and examine to see if shattered inside.

Another common issue is dirt.

If the fans and interior are coated with dust the set will detect fans running too slow or air flow restricted and shut down.

I have seen ones like this set where a good dusting with a air compressor (don't do it inside) and it will look like a dust storm.

I have seen this cure everything from will not stay on to shut down in less than 1 hour.

Won't start but CPU fan vibrates but will not go full blast. Intermittant

It appears you have a faulty CPU fan and it is causing the CPU to overheat and shut down.
I suggest you replace the CPU fan. remove any dust from the heatsink and put new heatsink compound on the CPU/heatsink.

Computer very slow ,won't print, forever to load pages, have corrupted files

Several things can slow down the computer: overheating, spyware, not enough RAM etc. If you know for sure you have corrupted files were they corrupted by a virus? You may need to reinstall Vista.

Is it slow when you boot up in safe mode? To boot into safe mode hit (usually) F8 while it is booting up. Let it completely boot into safe mode and then reboot again. Now is if it is behaving better.

To get rid of spyware download the free Spybot Search & Destroy from the net, run the update and then run it to dectect and get rid of the spyware. Spyware tries to send info which can slow down everything.

Overheating - does it feel hot? Is the fan running and pushing air?

If it worked fine before it is unlikely you don't have enough RAM. Windows itself needs at least 256mbs to run well without running other problems.

Again if you know files are corrupted, if they are windows files, you might need to reinstall vista.

My HP Compaq Presario v2000 has new mobo, new CPU

You probably put more than a pin-head size drop of heat grease compound on CPU, thus "bleeding" over on the CPU, effectively overheating processor (very common). In any event, your problem is overheating -that's *the* place to look for now.

E Machine T2682 powers up but, doesn't work

This sounds like an overheating problem, that is why the fan comes on right away. When you let it rest, it cools off, and works normally for a while.

Most modern PC's are designed to slow down their operating
frequency when they over-heat, and if that is not enough they
will go into suspend, hibernation or (totally off) modes to protect themselves from permanent damage.

Solutions:
Bigger power supply, more and better cooling fans, improved space and airflow around the cabinet, cool the room with aircond.

also better heat-sinks on the CPU and/or the chip-sets.

all relatively inexpensive.
