I have a HP Photosmart B109a Printer/Scanner. A fine vertical line appears on scans. How can the problem be overcome?

SOURCE: Lines when scanned

The common solution on this sight to this problem on any copier seemed to be simply clean the glass. I first cleaned the glass on the bed...no help. Then I lifted the feeder and discovered a portion of the glass under that as well. Once it was cleaned the lines disappeared!

I saved $$ on a useless service call for a simple, easy to fix problem thanks to this site!

Try scanning without HP imaging software

HP Photosmart C4380 Direct Scan button doesnt function in VISTA
Use the built-in feature of the Windows operating system, called Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), instead of the HP software to scan. Follow these steps to perform a WIA scan.

  1. Make sure that the product is on and that the cable is correctly connected.
  2. Click Start , and then click Control Panel .
  3. Click Printers and Other hardware , and then click Scanners and Cameras .
  4. Look for an icon representing the product, and then review the following information for further instructions:
  5. Double-click the icon to start the Scanner and Camera Wizard . Follow the on-screen instructions to scan images or documents to the computer
  6. If the WIA scan was successful , use the Scanner and Camera Wizard to scan instead of the HP software. To use the HP software, continue to the next step to continue troubleshooting. However, it is not necessary to do so.
  7. If the WIA scan was unsuccessful , continue to the next solution.
  8. Fully uninstall and reinstall the HP software Follow these steps to completely uninstall and then reinstall the HP software. Step one: Uninstall the software Use one of the following methods to uninstall the software. Method one: Uninstall the software using the product CD If the product software CD is available, follow these steps to uninstall the software. Otherwise, skip to the next method.
    1. Insert the software CD into the CD-ROM drive on the computer.
    2. If the Welcome installation screen appears, click Exit to close it.
    3. On the Windows task bar, click Start , and then click Run (c01463550.gif ). The Run dialog box appears. Figure 4: The Run dialog box c01463551.gif
    4. Click Browse . The Browse window appears.
    5. Navigate to the CD-ROM drive that the software CD is in, and then double-click the drive.
    6. From the list of folders and files on the CD, double-click the Util folder.
    7. From the list of folders and files inside the Util folder, double-click the CCC folder.
    8. From the list of folders and files inside the CCC folder, double-click the Uninstall_L3.bat file or Uninstall_L3_64.bat if a 64-bit operating system is installed on the computer.     9. Click OK . The software uninstaller opens in a command prompt window.
    10. Press Enter to begin the uninstall.
    Method two: Download and uninstall the software If the software CD is not available, follow these steps to download the software and then uninstall it.
    1. Click here to go to the Software & Driver download page on the HP Web site .
    2. Type the product number in the search field, and then click Submit (c01425574.gif ).
    3. If necessary, click the link for the product model number.
    4. Click the correct operating system.
    5. In the Driver section, click HP Full Feature software/driver , and then click Download only .
    6. When the File Download - Security Warning dialog box appears, click Save .
    7. Save the file in a location that is easy to remember.
    8. When the file finishes downloading, double-click the file to extract it.
    9. Click Exit on the Welcome installation screen.
    10. On the Windows task bar, click Start , and then click Search (c01463553.gif ). The Search Results window appears.
    11. In the Search Results window, click All files and folders .
    12. Click More advanced options , and then select Search hidden files and folders .
    13. In the All or part of the file name: box, type Uninstall_L3 , and then click Search . When the search is complete, the file appears in the Search Results window.
    14. Double-click the Uninstall_L3 file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstall.

Do you get the same line when you use the adf for other purposes?

If so, check the scanner glass just before the platen for something like white-out on it. Clean both the scanner glass and platen glass with Windex.

That is a common problem on all ADF scanners.

For horizontal lines, try using the HP "toolbox" to clean the print heads. You may need to repeat this process until you achieve a satisfactory result.

the problem is in the scanner, open it up and see if you can find any smudges, and clean any obstruction, any ink, liquid eraser residuals, can cause this part to appear as lines on your copied faxed image.
dont concentrate on the printer this is a scanner problem

Black vertical lines on faxes sent using auto document feeder


If you lift up the lid on your scanning device you will notice a glass strip about 1 inch thick and then the large area of glass used for flatbed scanning. The 1 inch strip is used for ADF scanning. Because your papper is moving across the glass strip, any dot, smudge or scratch will affect your scanning and cause verticial lines down the page. Sometimes the dot is not visible to the eye. Get some glass cleaner that has alcohol in it and thoroughly clean the glass strip and it should solve your problem. If it turns out to be a scratch on the glass then cleaning won't help.

Two black vertical lines appear on copy, pdf, and scan results


  1. Unplug the power cord and the phone line from the wall.
  2. Open the control panel.
  3. Pull the roller lever forward, and then lift the white roller out of the All-In-One.
  4. Note: The scan lens is located under the white roller.
  5. Use a clean, lint-free cloth dampened with water to wipe the white roller and the scan lens.
  6. Reinstall the white roller.
  7. Reconnect the power cord and the phone line.
  8. And then try to copy if get the dame line then its the hardware problem in the printer you must need to replace the scanner unit in the printer ..

Vertical lines in scanned documents


Scan glass has muck on it, needs to be perfectly clear, it is just in where you feed originals.
