the iphone finds the wireless networks in any area and tries to connect but can not connect. it also does connect to the internet via the phone carrier service. so would it still be the internal antenna problem as one guru suggested?

  • telefon Oct 27, 2008

the iphone does detect the wireless networks in any area and tries to connect, but cannot. it also connects to the internet via the telephone carrier's service. so I am wondering that if the internal antenna is faulty, how can the phone detect the networks?

  • telefon Oct 27, 2008

I already reset the settings and same problem continued.

  • telefon Oct 27, 2008

i did not understand the last solution. which other part of the phone?

  • telefon Oct 27, 2008

if the antenna (not the phone's) is bad, would the phone still be able to detect the wireless networks in an area?

  • telefon Oct 27, 2008

can anyone help me with a setup to make sure that my problem is indeed the antenna?

  • telefon Oct 27, 2008

how can I open the housing ?
how can I manually change the wifi channel?

  • telefon Oct 27, 2008

okey the last guru gave me a good tip. my problem does not appear to be with the antenna since as i got closer to the router, I got connected and stayed connected even when I walk away.however the internet speed drops when i walk away . everything works when I am close.

  • telefon Oct 27, 2008

when I get really close to the wireless router, iphone gets connected and the internet access is just fine, but when I walk away , even when it shows that the iphone is still wifi connected, the hourglass (or rather hourwheel) keeps turning and internet cannot be accessed.any ideas?

  • telefon Oct 27, 2008

i am connecting when i am very close to the router only.

  • telefon Oct 27, 2008

how can i take the battery out??

  • telefon Oct 28, 2008

i have two questions at this point then.
1- as some of you have suggested, doing a factory restore may be the last resort before being definitely convinced that it is a hardware problem. in doing so, how can I backup my contacts? i backupped my photos in a file on my computer but couldn't find the option for my contacts.

2 - if factory restore fails, how can I open the housing (or should I even try?) and try to dry the wifi antenna or anything else?

    thanks for all the advise

  • telefon Oct 28, 2008

my router is on channel 11

  • telefon Oct 28, 2008

    electech,

please let me know how I can take the housing out so that I can dry the battery and more??? I definitely want to try drying the battery since I tried drying the iphone for days before I got it to work at all.

I have the same type of phone that you have sent pictures of.

  • telefon Oct 28, 2008

i am overseas and my warranty is expiring any day now. I had bought it exactly one year ago. I am hesistant to take it to an apple store here but maybe I will try drying it even more to see what happens. any idea about how much Apple charges to fix internal antennas??

My experience is that this is an Exchange server issue with the way the SMTP connector authenticates the iPhone users credentials. Try changing the SMTP connectors authentication from "Windows Authentication" to "Password sent in clear text" (make sure to stop and start the SMTP connector) -- no changes are necessary on the iPhone.

You might have messed up the wireless receiver when it was dropped in water. See if you can find any signals near a wireless network and then see if you can connect. Make sure it does not have any security settings because it wont let you on any way. If that does not work, try resetting your wireless connections and try logging on then. If that does not work, then you might need a new wireless receiver.

Are you sure you want to take the battery out yourself? You could damage a whole bunch of other things while opening the iphone and disconnecting the battery. you should get it done by a professional but if you really want to do it, here you go: pop of the back case slowly with a credit card or something that will not scratch the back or sides of it just in case there is something that is connected from the rest of the iphone to the back cover, and once you get the back cover off, you should see the battery in there. You should not disconnect it unless you have a soldering tool to reconnect the cords because i think it is a soldered connection.

Based on your last comment. The problem could indeed be the antenna. Its not able to pick up a signal from a distance any longer. This type of problem happens with wireless routers and adapters as well as time goes by. So the water damage may have degraded the antenna to a point that it will work no question but the distance that it is able to pick up a signal and sustain a connection has lessened. An option to fix this is to possibly update the Iphone software via Itunes although its going to be a long shot. Another option is to just have the antenna replaced.

I would not suggest that you take the battery out. First thing is that it will completely void the warranty. I would assume that your unit is still under warranty since the Iphone just came out recently. You can have the antenna replaced under warranty. if its not under warranty you could also risk damaging other parts that you are NOT having a problem with thus compounding the problem at hand. the best thing that you could do is to just take the unit to an Apple center and have the antenna replaced.

It is very likely that the wireless device of your iphone has got damaged. I would request you to get it checked by some professional technican or contact the manufacturer directly.

The wi-fi chip inside is already shorted due to water penetration. If you can take apart the housing of your phone, you can use a blower (cold air) to thoroughly dry the internal chips. That one is located on the top near the power switch. Or leave it bold (without the housing) for about half a day just to make sure it's realy dried up.

Another thing you can try is check on the wireless settings of your unit if you can manually select or change the wifi channel. Use channel 11 if there's an option like that.

Once the water has got in there it has ruined components , if you take out the battery and leave it open for a long time it may work again , but if not then it is ruined , there is no way to fix it but replacing it will be the only way
sorry , but that how these electronics are these days

the problem is that there is still water in it , you need to let it dry before you permanently ruin it!

  • jason Oct 27, 2008

the best thing you can do right now is pull the battery out , take a hair dryer on low and dry out the phone more , when you dropped it in the water you may already have ruined the antenna recieving and sending controling IC, these chips require very little power for them to work and being that water can conduct elctricity , it is causing the antenna not to be able to recive a good signal

so if you don't dry it out then you will ruin your phone , guaranteed!!!

  • jason Oct 27, 2008

if this is the same type iphone , then this where the antenna section is , make sure its dry and wait a day to be sure that even under other components will be dry

  • jason Oct 27, 2008

    here is the battery section

  • jason Oct 28, 2008

if you have a warranty , you should only have to pay for it to get there( s&h) , but ask them how much ayway

if the antenna proccessing section of the phone is effected they will have to replace the main board

    not just the antenna

just tell them you can't recieve signals anymore

  • jason Oct 28, 2008

mainly you should be drying the phones insides not the battery so much , but not high heat

the back should pop off and don't have screws holding it down , just be careful when you pop the back off , as it can crack easily

  • jason Oct 28, 2008

ofcourse you don't have to go that far!

  • jason Oct 28, 2008

as long as you get the first one open don't worry about the screws then , just blow dry it out with the antenna cover off

  • jason Oct 28, 2008

make sure to turn it off and take the card out and dry it thru the card slot also

If this happened afte the Iphone dropped in water, that means that the wireless antenna (separate from the phone one) wirings had been damaged, either by a short when the Iphone came in contact with the liquid, or by oxide formation after you dried it up.

The Iphone mut be inspected and tested internally to be repaired.

Check if you can still use your guaranty, and call the phone number listed on the owner manual to find out it there is possibility or guaranty extension, and the eventual cost of repair.

If it is the antenna then you get weak signal, if signal is excellent when you get near to the router, then it is not the antenna.

Reset the Iphone to factory settings and establish connection again, this should sort it out if it is a settings problem.

If this does not fix it, as the fault cohincided with the water damage, then it is probably a fault related to the internal wi fi adapter, that is a separate circuit from the phone receiver.

Here is how to reset the Iphone :

To restore iPhone and reset the phone to default factory settings, follow these steps:

      1. Turn off iPhone - Hold down the Sleep/Wake button
for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the red
slider. Ignore this step if your iPhone is already off.

      2. Press and hold down the Home button for about 10 seconds until a yellow triangle with a text which says Please Connect to iTunes appears.

      3. Plug the iPhone into Mac or Windows PC. Release the button if you haven’t.

      4. Run and open iTunes if it’s not already opened yet.

      5. iTunes will prompt a message that says iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Click OK.

      6. You will be taken to the iPhone pane. Then, click on Restore.

      7. Wait for the full restoration process to complete, and the iPhone
will be back to the original settings state as when it left the
manufacturing factory, typically a working phone again if you face any
        problem, unless it’s hardware related.

My iphone will not read the sim card. The card works fine in another phone. My phone was submerged in a tub of greasy water and i am tryinng to restore it now.

Ben, Could you try dry it first? Do not turn on.
As you said that your card is not read by iphone, i can see that you already turn it on after it submerged in greasy water. I hope it doesn't short circuit yet. Use hair dryer, dry your iphone through the usb connection hole, leave for awhile, make sure it dry, then try again. Hope this will help. For future, if phone dropped in water, first thing to do is take off battery, or turn of completely then dry it before checking it still work or not. Thanks for reading.

    Tip

How to connect an iPhone to the Internet

Connecting your iPhone to the internet is an easy process. You just simply use any application on your iPhone which uses internet service.

Your iPhone can either use WiFi or Cellular for internet access.

    - A WiFi network is simply a wireless network. You can find them at coffee shops, libraries or even at your house if you a router setup for wireless access.

    - Cellular data networks allow Internet connectivity over the cellular network. Check your carrier's network coverage in your area for availability.

When you use an application on your iPhone that requires internet service it will either connect to the last WiFi network used, or if that network is not available it will list all available networks in range. You can simply tap on the network you wish to join and it will connect. If the network requires a password it will show a lock icon. If no Wifi networks are available your iPhone will connect over the cellular data network and fees may apply.

To see all the Wi-Fi networks in range, from the Home screen choose Settings > Wi-Fi. Tap a network to join it.

The Apple Store does not touch these phones, they ship it directly back to Apple to replace. The rice in bag trick is generally a good idea with the exception that the iphone doesnt have a removal battery which hinders the effectiveness. But if you want to go the free route, leave your iphone in rice for a couple days.

If a hard reset (press menu and center button together for 5 sec) and software restore doesn't cure it , you have a broken digitizer of your iPhone screen assembly. There is an iphone repair guide website that shows you how to do the replacement yourself and a third party iphone repair company that can do it for you.

WIFI Connection Problem - connects only to EDGE

If you want to use wifi only when your at home you can go in and manually disable the cellular data so the internet will only be wifi based. Probably saving you MB's and data cost.

Go to Settings, General, Network, then simply turn off the Cellular Data. Then it won't connect anymore to the cell data and rely only on wifi when your connected to it.

And simple follow the same steps and revers the process when your out on the go.

Re: IPhone doesn't connect with wifi automatically - password not recoginized HELP!!!

Yep, I had the same problem with my iPhone as well (32GB 3GS).
Had the signal NO problem for about a week then POOF it was gone. WTF?
Prowled the boards looking for a solution.
Tried resetting the phone, resetting the Wi-Fi, switching airplane mode on and off, forgetting the network, etc.

    HERE'S YOUR SOLUTION :
Go unplug your wireless router's power cord.
    Wait 30 seconds.
    Plug it back in.

Your iPhone will reconnect, and you'll be back in business.
