The modem is being forced to update the Firmware by your cable company, and the modem refuses to... Call your ISP and they can stop it form forcing the update...

Connecting the device, see the "Quick Reference Guide":
For installing the modem the easiest way is to run the provided cdrom.
When not available perform the settings as showed in the guides.
Motorola 5100 series user guide:
See page 7 "Before You Begin" for the requirements and selecting either USB or Ethernet connection.
Page 22 gives the overview for the pages how to configure ethernet settings.

I have looked at this modem and to perform a reset simply unplug the power supply for 30-45 seconds then plug back in. There is a 24 hour Modem Tech Support number which is free. The number is 1-877-466-8646
