Question about NetGear N300 Wireless Router

1 Answer

Netgear N300 Firewall setting

I'm trying to setup the firewall to block internet access using the schedule. - I have IP adresses assigned by MAC on DHCP. - Schedule Set to 19H-22H. - I created a rule in the firewall blocking outbound Any for the IP adress corresponding to the mask - I m trying to use either Allow by schedule otherwise block or Block by schedule otherwise Allow. No matter rules i set up on the firewall, it seems to do nothing, nothing at all is blocked. Rule : Service Name:Any(ALL) Action :Allow by schedule, otherwise Block LAN User :192.168.0.5 (Assigned by MAC adress) Wan Server :Any Schedule : Start : 19H End : 22H

Wait you using DHCP? What's to stop the computer from releasing the dhcp lease and obtain a new IP besides the 192.168.0.5 that you are blocking?

All configuration can be done with the router GUI.
Firewalls: Server Side Having a server side firewall is the typical configuration on many systems. There is only one method for doing this, whether you use telnet or ssh: map a port to be forwarded to the server in the firewall router. It is not advised that you use telnet from the Internet for security reasons; that is usually why you have a firewall.Decide which method of connectivity will be allowed, and determine what port you will use to forward to this service. If there is only one server involved, you can use port 22 for ssh or 23 for telnet and forward them straight through to the server. But if there are several servers involved and they do not have public IP addresses, you will need to pick different ports on the firewall router and let the router forward those ports to the different internal servers.

I am using my netgear N300 router for wireless access only. But it is slow if multiple devices are using it?

The bandwith is shared between devices, making them slower. DHCP provides an IP and is dynamic, making it easy to add devices, A static IP means you have to assign and keep track of the IP's. Most people use DHCP.

Make sure your firewall is not blocking your ability to go to websites. I saw this the other day, somehow the users firewall was set to block all internet traffic out of the computer.

Problems with the Web Configuration Screen

# The computer may not have received an IP address. Restart it to have an IP dynamically assigned (or run "winipcfg" in Windows ME or earlier, or "ipconfig" utility in Windows NT), and then launch the browser. # You are running a software firewall on your computer. Disable it while accessing the router's configuration. Also you should realize that running a firewall in conjunction with a NETGEAR firewall may cause other problems. We recommend turning off software firewalls. # Remove proxy settings on your Internet browser. # Remove the dial-up settings on your browser.
