the Cd/DVD drive will not work. won't read any discs.

  • gp2756 Oct 26, 2008

I did as you said and yes there is an exclamation mark there. I tried updating the driver but it comes back with the same error code. Think the drive is gone?

  • gp2756 Oct 28, 2008

I tried as you suggested and it came back with the same error. I believe the drive is shot. Best Buy told me to bring it by and they will test it and install the new drive if it truely is that. Said it maybe just a software program glitch also. Thank you so much for all your advice, etc.

Can you check in device manager to see if the there is an exclamation mark next to your device. GO to control panel>system>device manager.

If there is there may be a problem with the driver for this device. Right click the device and do to properties, click on update driver. If this does not help let me know.

okay try this before you make the cd/dvd drive as useless.

    1) check that the cables are connected firmly to the back of the drive

    2) Go back to control panel>system>device manager and this time instead of updating the driver, click on uninstall. This will uninstall the drive. Then reboot your computer, this will pick the drive back up as new hardware and install it again. Hopefully if there was a previos registration error in the registry this will bypass it and load new info there and your drive will work. If not then the drive could be faulty. Good luck and I hope it helps.

you are very welcome, If you know the know that model and model numbers of the drives you can always try and update the drives with different drivers than the ones that comes with windows. They may have loaded a generic driver for them and you need that actual driver for that drive for the version of windows you have. If you haven't taken it to Best Buy yet let me know what the models are and I will try and find the drivers for you

Try uninstalling the DVD drive in the Device Manager in the Control Panel, then do a graceful shutdown of the PC. Power the PC back on and see if it finds "new hardware" and installs the driver. I take that you have an Acer Aspire PC.
