How do we get the adgitator out? Lost a piece of jewelry... want to see if it's lodged underneath Email or call 419.236.6996

If you have the softener dispenser cup, remove it by pulling up on the blue ring, and then pop the cup off. This exposes the flat agitator cap. Gently pry it up to get it started, and it, too, will snap off. If you have a dust cap inside the agitator, remove it. This will expose the 7/16" hex head screw that attaches the agitator to the shaft. Remove the screw and the agitator will lift off the shaft.

How do i remove the agitater to clean under it

Hi. The agitator is fastened to the agitator shaft and its movement is driven either by splines or a simple clutch assembly, which is removable as well. The splines are usually plastic or rubber nubs on a cylinder that fits over the agitator shaft. If the nubs wear down, the shaft will not turn properly or it will turn weakly. If the agitator is moving in only one direction, the likely cause is the clutch assembly. The clutch has dogs that depress and pop up with each turn. If those dogs are worn, they will not engage properly and the agitator will turn only in one direction.

Various makes and models differ in how the agitator is removed. In some newer models, the agitator just lifts straight up and out. However, in most models you will have to preform a combination of the following steps. First remove the fabric softener dispenser, if any. It should either lift or screw off. Next remove the cap. It may lift off, screw off or failing that, it may need to be pried off.

Beneath the cap some agitators are secured in place by a bolt. Use a socket wrench with an extension to remove that bolt. Some Maytags may have a screw near to the bottom of the agitator post that must be removed. Now try to lift the agitator straight up, possibly with a little back and forth rocking motion. Use caution when pulling, the agitator may come loose suddenly and hit you in the face or send you flying backward.

If the agitator is particularly stubborn, you can loop some rope under one side of the agitator at the bottom and then up over a broom handle. Now loop it again under the other side of the agitator and back up to the broom. Brace one end of the broom handle or something of this nature against the top of the washer and lift up on the other end. Double check that you have removed anything that may be securing the agitator in place. Do not use too much force or you may damage the washer cabinet, agitator or injure yourself.

Whirlpool top load washer

Bill,

On most top load whirpool washers (not including the calypso or the cabrillo) there are 2 main styles for getting the agitator off.

The first and easiet are for the older styles. This will be easy to identify as there is a green ring around the fabric softner dispenser holding it on. Raise the ring up and the dispenser will come off. Underneath you will see a plastic cap. Pry this off with a small flat hear screw driver. Underneath there, there will be a 7/16" bolt. Take it off with a rachet and lift the agitator from the bottom and out of the way.

The second and slightly more complicated method is for the new style. This can be identified by the 4 evenly spaced slots just underneath the fabric softner dispenser. First gently rock the top of the fabric softner side to side. the white top should come off as well as a clear plastic cup underneath. You will be left with 4 white plastic shafts sticking up just above thse slots mentioned earlier. Taking care not to break these shafts, rotate the remaining top piece of the agitator counter clock wise. Once it rotates, pull/ pry it off. Underneath there will be a clear plastic cap with 2 tabs on it. Pull the cap off by these tabs. Remove the remaining 7/16 bolt underneath and lift the agitator off by the bottom.

There are many variations of agitators, but one of these 2 methods (or even a mixture) should get you taken care of. One other thing to mention. Once you take either of the perviously mentioned styles off, you may find a white square hole under neath the dispensers. With this style, you use a 1/2" rachet to unscrew it counter clockwise and the 7/16 bolt is underneath.

If this doesn't seem to match what you have, get me the model number (just underneath the lid to the center rear) and I can get you some step by step directions just for your model.

Noise in washer need to know how to remove agitator

For most Kenmore, Whirlpool, Estes, Maytag, and some GE washers the top portion of the agitator can be pried off (either a cap or fabric sofrtner dispenser depaneing on make and model) and there is a bolt underneath. Once removed, the agitator can be lifted straight out. Some GE's you have to actually "pop" the agitator by placing a strap underneath and lifting it out that way. If your are still having trouble, reply back with your model and serial number and we can go from there.
