Direct variation is when the line goes through the origin (0,0). Thus, the equation of a line with direct variation is y=mx, since y=mx + b, but b is equal to 0.

What is the average rate of change for 5x+4

The rate of change for the function y=5x+4 is the coefficient 5 that multiplies the independent variable x. For a unit variation of x (x varies by 1) y varies by 5 units.
Between x1=2 to x2=3, y varies from y1=5*2+4=14 to y2=5*3+4=19.
The rate of change is defined as
(variation in y)/(variation in x)=(19-14)/(3-2)=5

You have to check the speed sensor near the mottor pully. If the speed sensor is fulty or if its coverd with dust then speed can vary. Another reson for speed variation is the Faulty carbon brush in the motor. I have added the picture of speed sensor for reffarance . If y varies directly as the square of x,and y=24 when x=4,find the constant of variation

y varies directly as the square of x means:

y = kx^2


k is the constant of variation. You can use any letter except y or x for constant

Put values of y and x: (24) = k * (4)^2

k = 24/(4*4) = 24/16 = 3/2 = 1.5

The stopping distance is proportional to square of speed.

that is 90ft proportional to 40^2 mph.

We can write as 90 = X * 40^2. ( X is a constant of proportionality) .

Which implies X = 90 / 1600 = .05625.

Assume S be the distance at which car stops when the speed is 90 mph.

S = X * 90^2. ( since X does not vary as same car is used)

=> S =.05625 * 8100 = 455.625 ft.
