SOURCE: refrigerator not cooling.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Almost always, your described problem could be either:

  • evaporator fan/blower is faulty; or
  • air passgaeway blocked or vent is blocked or closed.
The refrigerator section gets its cold air from the freezer. If the freezer is working then the frozen air would have to be drawn to the refrigerator side by the fan. If the fan is not working or the air passage way is blocked, then no frozen air would be moving towards the refrigerator side. result would be as you described.

In some instances, it could be the thermostat of the refrigerator but this would be least likely.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: Freezer freezes but refrigerator doesn't cool

Hi

Check the back wall or floor of the freezer section for frost. Check the freezer (evaporator) fan to see if it is running. Check the condenser coils (under the unit) for blockage from dust. Check the condenser fan (under the unit) to see if it is running. If you have frost in the freezer there is a problem with the defrost system and the freezer will start to warm eventually as well as the fresh food section. If that is the problem you can check the defrost terminator, defrost heater/s, and the defrost timer or adaptive defrost control If used on your unit or the main control board if so equipped. These things usually require dismantling the freezer and other areas of the refrigerator to be checked. You could defrost the freezer by disconnecting the power to the refrigerator and letting it sit for at least 24 hours with both doors wide open to allow the frost to melt completely but it will build up again in 1-2 weeks and start the warming up again.

If the freezer is between zero-10 degrees and the fan motor is running usually indicate the airflow is not getting into the fresh food section. You might check the damper control to see if it's opening up and/or the vent clear.
If you remove the back wall inside the freezer and find that the evaporator coils have ice built-up on them, this usually indicates a defrost problem (defrost heater and thermostat or defrost timer (or adaptive defrost control on newer models).
If the evap. coils are more or less clean, then it's probably the air diffuser (also called damper control). The diffuser is located between the freezer and the refrigerator sections.

SOURCE: The top freezer is working but lower part

Hello Eddie111,
If you were to remove the rear panel on the inside rear of the freezer you would then be able to gain access to the evaporator coil, If when you gained access to the evaporator coil you then noticed any ice build up on the coil itself this would be called a defrost issue that your unit was having. This is usually due to one of three parts either the defrost thermostat, the defrost heater, or the defrost timer or in some units the adaptive control board would be showing a fault. Would need you to message me back further if you do have a defrost issue with your unit. There is also a small damper door that lets the evaporator fan motor blow cold air into the refrigerator side of the unit this damper door is controled by a thermostat that is found in the ceiling of the unit. Usually attached to the control knob that is located inside the freezer. So first thing to check for is that the fan is working on the inside of the freezer next thing would be if you have the defrost issue on the evaporator coil itself, and lastly you would check the damper door and the thermostat inside the refrigerator side of the unit. If you have any further questions message me back with your reply to the defrost question that I asked previously. Thanks again I await your reply
Rick
