Question about Gateway Computers & Internet

No longer able to access my external hard drice

Hi there, 1. I have had this external hard drive working for some time. 2. Not sure if this is the cause of the problem, but recently bought a USB component for reading my digital cameras memory card. 3. While transferring photos from the memory card to the external hard drive I noticed a slight error when one of the images could not be saved. 4. The hard external hard drive at this point could still be accessed 5. The next day, attempted to transfer more pictures to the external hard drive, this time none of them could be transfered? 6. Now I can no longer access my external hard drive 7. The hard drive is recognised and listed within Windows 7 file manager, but when you attempt to open/view it you get an error message? Any ideas what might have happened, or if there is a way of making it work again and not loosing any data from the external hard drive?

From your description it sounds like your drive has developed a case of bad sectors. It's a common problem.

I would suggest if you want to try recovering the data yourself.

Or have the guys at take a look at it for you. They operate remotely over the Internet and work off of donations.

There are two possible causes for what you're describing. Either the disk drive inside the enclosure is dying/dead, or the circuitry inside the enclosure is having problems. The only way to know for sure would be to open the enclosure and remove the drive. With the drive removed, you can either connect the drive to a computer using a SATA cable directly or using a SATA to USB dock. Or you can try another hard drive with the enclosure to see if it has the same issue.

Windows 7 states external drive 'malfunctioning'

you got two possiable issues here.

1. The ac apadtor not suppling enough power to the hard drive.

2. The USB controller insdie is faulty.

I have a solution for you. Take the hard drive out of the unit (if you care about your data)

1. put it into another external case witch are sold for under $15.00 at or simply plug it into your desktop inside vai your SATA controller. If you have a laptop of course that will not work you need to then purchase a external enclosure.

Hard disk not detected sometimes

I can think of 3 possible causes to your problem:

1. Faulty cable - try replacing the cable by borrowing a working cable from a friend. If this solves the problem then you need to buy a new cable

2. Lack of power - some USB drives especially those for high capacity drives require extra power aside from that provided by USB. If you do not have a separate power leading to your drive, check if there is a separate power slot and run a cable from it to your outlet/USB slot. Just make sure that the voltage levels are correct.

3. USB Slot - some laptops' USB slots do not produce power enough to drive a hard disk. Other devices may work (e.g. keyboards, mouse) but not hard drives. Try to use another slot in your laptop. If this works, remember to use the same slot next time.

Hope this helps.

I require a driver for our Beyond micro external hard drive.

It looks as though there is no driver support for beyond micro although the specs state that the drive is plug and play. which means you just plug it in and windows sets it up. other than that there are no software or drivers for it.

best of luck.
hope this helped.

Be sure to plug the USB connector and the back of the CPU. Then go to Application folder if your running on OS X. Locate the disk utility, then double click it and see if your external drive have been detected. If it is detected try to repair it. and then thats it
