    not draining

  • Bill_Neilan Dec 02, 2008

We have a Kenmore 90 series--owned it since 2001. Model # 22902. It suddenly stopped draining and is not going into the spin cycle. After we emptied out the clothes ( not a large load- by the way), it was put on a different cyle and it drained. How does one address a faulty lid switch? If that is what it is?

I have a Kenmore 90 series washer. My washer would stop when it is time for it to begin draining in the spin cycle. I realized that the problem lie in the switch located where closes. However, I do not know how dissasemble it because I can not find my parts manuel. Can you please help me

90 Series Kenmore washer not going to spin cycle and not draining water.

  • markncindyw Jan 12, 2009

I have the same problem. My washer is a Kenmore 90 series and it stopped draining and it doesn't spin at all. I did notice that the lid switch is loose and was thinking that could be the problem. I also notice there are 2 screws
right above the lid switch and they are loose but I can't get them out. Is there an easy way of doing this? Either that or the coupler needs fixed. I'm hoping to fix this either way. Having a hard time finding an owners manual online as well.

  • markncindyw Jan 12, 2009

Well, I took the advice and checked out the lid switch. The screws that were loose were indeed suppose to be connected to the switch. When I took them out there was a piece of the switch still attached. I took them out, was able to pull out the switch far enough and ran the spin cycle and it worked. So, now off to the parts store to buy a new switch.
Thanks so much for having the problem solutions on here!

I have the same problem. Better to replace or fix it?

  • Paul Mar 01, 2009

I just had the same problem, my Kenmore 90 series washer would not go into the spin cycle or drain the water. After reading these posts I also noticed that the screws to the lid switch were loose not allowing the lid the engage the switch ( the screw housings broke in the rear).

Thanks for the tip and avoiding any costly repairs.

the lid switch is in fact broken, how do I get in there to fix the switch?

I have a replacement switch, but how do I ge to it to replace

  • Anonymous May 14, 2009

    will not drain or spin

  • torpster May 17, 2009

After wash cyle, washer won't progress to rinse or spin cycle. Can manually move dial to rinse and washer will run, but won't drain. Moving dial to spin and pulling to start won't start spin cycle.

I've had the same problem...you can purchase a replacement lid switch at your local appliance parts store for about $35. Fortunatly, the sales person at the appliance store had diagrams and provided instructions to replace the switch. I was able to finish the job and fix the switch in less than 1 hour. Good Luck.

If the unit is still agitating as it is supposed to, this is usually due to a faulty lid switch.

Have replaced the door lock switch and the electronic control board, could the pump that empties the water have anything to do with it not going into spin cycle? washer is normal until it reaches the rinse cycle, then all lights in control knob are flashing.

It appears your timer/main controller has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question

SOURCE: washer will not spin during the wash cycle

Hi, Most possible causes are:-
1.Make sure the lid is closed. There is a switch inside that completes the connection. Your washer may not spin or agitate if this connection is not completed. Make sure that the speed selector switch is not between speeds. Verify that the washer is not in a soak cycle. You can also reset the water level up or down to make sure that the water level control switch isn't stuck. If you hear a humming sound when the washer is full of water, you may have something stuck in the drain pump.

2.If one of these is not the problem, check the belt. The main drive motor has two distinct functions. The first function is to spin the basket; the second function is to reciprocate your agitator. Inside your washer's transmission is a crank type gear and connecting rods that are used to agitate the washer, with the spinning coming from the washer motor itself. This usually entails some sort of clutch mechanism. Some things to check if your washer is not agitating and/or spinning are:

3.If you notice weak or no agitation, the splines connecting the agitator to the drive shaft may be stripped and need to be replaced.

4.After a lot of use, belts can become worn or damaged. Replace any worn or damaged belts immediately. If you have a broken belt, replace it and check the pulley to make sure it's not seized.

5.Sometimes the drive pulley can wear out and it won't turn the drive belt. Look for wear marks, pits, or uneven spots. It's best to just replace it with a new pulley.

6.Many washers use a reversing motor. Sometimes it will continue to work in one direction even if it won't spin in the other direction. If your washer has a drive motor issue, you probably need to replace the motor with a new one.

7.The lid switch is a safety device that's there to protect you from sticking your hands into a spinning washer. If this switch goes bad, the washer will not work. You will have to replace it. It is inside the main housing for the washer, and located near the door frame.

8.The coupler connects the motor to the transmission. After lengthy use, this plastic and rubber coupler can wear out. If this happens, you need to replace it.

9.Transmission and clutch assemblies can cause agitator and spinning problems They are fairly complex.

Kenmore 90 series washer won't drain and go to spin cycle

Take the power plug off the wall. Be prepared for a lot of water before attempting the following. It doesn't spin because the unit is not draining water. It will not spin with water in it - must drain first. Check drain hose for kink, check exit pipe for blockage. Remove the front access panel, bottom front, screws beneath; if you find a pipe there with a cap -this is for draining water. Could be your "coin trap assembly" is blocked, therefore not allowing all the water to pump out. Remove the clamp (or unscrew) that connects the trap assembly to the pump and clean it out.
If helped pl say so.
