You can download the drivers from the Compaq/HP WEBsupport/download page. Make sure you
select your model laptop and the XP orVista Windows version of the drivers you require and install them. Click onthis link to download the drivers: - http://welcome.hp.com/country/au/en/cs/support.html
HP Pavilion dv6000 CTO Notebook PC-drivers if this is you pc name ...you find all drivers including sound ..at that link ...just reinstall the sound driver ( this is for windows vista but I suspect it will work on xp too)

audio driver is the first on each page. if you have problems make sure you have the correct model. this is for hp dv6000 but you should check in the bottom of your laptop near the windows registration label
There is option in BIOS called something about automated SATA recognition or similar - disable it. It is under System configuration. And if you are putting new drive in then run full test from BIOS (Hard drive selftest - takes about 79min.) I tried to reinstall Windows Media center on my HP dv6000 because my previous hdd crashed - When I put in installation cd - it said that it can't find hdd. I spent week to figuring that out. The thing is - as far as you haven't disabled that SATA thing in BIOS - PC doesn't recognize hdd. But only with Windows media center edition. With all other windows xp - there is no such problems. Strange.
