I have owned several Canon cameras and never had any problems.  My lens also will not retract. Does anyone have a phone number for customer service for Canon to schedule a warranty repair?

Mine has done this twice, both times requiring it to be sent off for repair, both covered under warranty though luckily. Both came back saying they replaced the shutter assembly. Camera is fixing to go back out for a third time (not shutter related). I've lost all confidence in canon with this one.

I have had my canon 870is for about 1 1/2 yrs & love it-I have never had any problems until today-the battery flashed red(dead) & I removed it & charged it...Well, now since I put it back in...

Depending on how long your camera has been put away for, and in what conditions it could be either with the camera or the battery itself.
If the battery is older it won't hold the charge, so even charging it and immediately placing in the camera it won't have enough energy to power it on and stay on.
You can try to purchase a new battery for the camera, make sure it is the manufacturer indicated battery. Often people try other batteries and they don't work. it does make a difference.
This company is very reliable http://www.teleplancamerarepair.com/Canon_Powershot_SD870_IS
and they also clean the camera as part of their repair services.
Make sure you tell them what is going for it could be something with the built in flash, or a camera sensor.
Try the battery first.

I turned on powershot then opened the battery

If you install fresh batteries, close the battery door the lens should retract. If it did not, make sure the batteries installed are properly. And don't do that again you will lose all pictures on the card and may ruin the card permenently.

Canon SD 870IS - lens error

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Hey ceedub,
According to the manufacturer if the lens won't retract back into the camera it is caused by the memory card slot/battery cover was opened when the power was on. If this is the case to fix this you should close the memory card slot/battery cover, and then turn the camera on and off. If this is not the cause there is most likely something obstructing the movement of the lens (i.e. sand), and I would try blowing compressed air into the side of the lens to try and dislodge whatever it is. If this doesn't work I would have the camera looked at by an authorized service technician. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Allan

E 18 problem

Hello there,
The E18 error is related to the LENS not able to retract fully. If it is still under warranty, I would advise you bring it to the nearest service center. This is to avoid further damages. Otherwise, you can try a few things below.
There are a couple of things you can do.
1. Turn it on and then off. Spray canned air around the lens.
If trick 1 will not work out, try this.
2. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Turn on the camera and then give it a couple of firm whacks on the side. Make sure nothing is blocking the lens and wait for it to fully retract.
Let me know how it goes.
