Hi SGT! Thanks for YOUR service! Frankly I would rather roll back to XP but I still use Vista since my job is to help and so subject myself to the problems like you are experiencing. If the problem is only a missing icon then right-click on the Start button>select Properties>Select Notification Area tab and you will see a check box for Speaker icon. If the sound device is not recognized then you must find the driver for the sound device or chipset that you have and that is unique to your laptop brand. Being new to Vista it might be less frustrating if you go to Control Panel and choose 'Classic View' to see the bigger list of icons. Windows Update and "Custom" rather than "Express" might automatically detect any hardware drivers available and you will see that on the left of the display as hardware or optional update. If you still have a problem go to the Toshiba Support website and see what updates for audio drivers you have available for Vista. Vista was developed by Interior Decorators posing as software developers so understand that you are not alone if you get frustrated finding some of the most simple tasks to perform. Thanks again for your service to the USA and IRAQ. Steve Medley, veteran submarine sailor.

In the sounds and audio properties, see if the play back options has your device selected and not muted and also check the box that says "place icon on taskbar"
if you can't do any of that then go into control panel and select system / hardware / device manager / and look at audio and see if there is a yellow symbol next to your audio device, if there is then theres a problem , if so right click on it and try to update the driver
otherwise you will have to type in your browser " vista audio drivers" or look for audio software for your laptop model
I have placed a link for vista sound drivers , hope that does it , but I'll be back to see if you require further assistance
