Hi SGT! Thanks for YOUR service!  Frankly I would rather roll back to XP but I still use Vista since my job is to help and so subject myself to the problems like you are experiencing.  If the problem is only a missing icon then right-click on the Start button>select Properties>Select Notification Area tab and you will see a check box for Speaker icon.  If the sound device is not recognized then you must find the driver for the sound device or chipset that you have and that is unique to your laptop brand. Being new to Vista it might be less frustrating if you go to Control Panel and choose 'Classic View' to see the bigger list of icons. Windows Update and "Custom" rather than "Express" might automatically detect any hardware drivers available and you will see that on the left of the display as hardware or optional update.  If you still have a problem go to the Toshiba Support website and see what updates for audio drivers you have available for Vista.  Vista was developed by Interior Decorators posing as software developers so understand that you are not alone if you get frustrated finding some of the most simple tasks to perform.  Thanks again for your service to the USA and IRAQ. In the sounds and audio properties, see if the play back options has your device selected and not muted and also check the box that says "place icon on taskbar"
if you can't do any of that then go into control panel and select system / hardware / device manager / and look at audio and see if there is a yellow symbol next to your audio device, if there is then theres a problem , if so right click on it and try to update the driver
otherwise you will have to type in your browser " vista audio drivers" or look for audio software for your laptop model
I have placed a link for vista sound drivers , hope that does it , but I'll be back to see if you require further assistance

HI I HAVE A DELL VOSTRO A860 AND I JUST INSTALLED WINDOWS 7 EVERYTHING IS WORKING FINE EXCEPT THE SOUND IVE DOWNLOADED VISTA DRIVERS REALTEK AND CONEXTEANT DRIVERS BUT I CANT SEEM TO GET THE SOUND TO WORK...

If you hear the sound on the headphones then the drivers installed correctly and the defect is either hardware - the jack for the headphones is stuck so the internal speakers are no longer activated when you unplug the headphones = the jack will have to be replaced by a shop - or software - you will have to go into the Realtek HD Control Panel and configure the audio outputs correctly = enable or unmute the internal speakers.
The Panel icon can be found in the notification area or in Start > Control Panel.

Go to control panel, click on sound and check if the head phone jack is enabled and also if the drop down list under head phone jack properties states 'use this device'
I had a similar problem with my build in speakers on my laptop also in Vista and the problem was simply that the speakers were not enabled.
Hope that solves the problem for you.

No headphone sound, but internal speaker works fine.

Hello,

Hello,

It is because that your internal speaker is the default play back device other than your head phone or external speaker.

Need to go to your sound setting.

Depend on your operating system, click Start, then click Control panel, then click Hardware and Sound, click Sound.

Under Playback tab, select your external speaker or head phones as default device.

Laptop Speakers Dont Work

Start, control panel, sounds and audio devices. Check "volume" and check if to see if the speakers are "muted". If not, select "sound" the sound profile should be "windows default" if not change it by using the down arrow on the side. Try the "sounds" by clicking on one of them like "asterisk" then clicking on the "right" arrow beside the "browse". This should play the selected sound if the speakers are working.

Sound Coming From BOTH SPEAKErs and headphones

Sound emanating from both the internal speakers and headphone/earphone while the later is engaged could mean a factory defect in your speaker device. Upgrading your OS from XP to Vista may not solve your problem. However, since the service center technician will probably insist on his diagnosis and recommendation, you may need to upgrade your OS just to prove your point.

Acer laptop no sound in headphone jack

I have an Acer Aspire 7720z and have had the same problem. I am assuming your OS is Vista.

Go to Control Panel -open "Sounds" folder and you should see "Headphones" in the list under "Speakers". There will be a green tick on the "Speakers" symbol. Right click on the headphones symbol and then click "Set as Default device". Click OK and the headphone socket should now work correctly. It sorted my problem. If you want to go back to using the crappy internal speakers follow the same procedure setting the speakers as your default device.
Enjoy.
