Hello
You haven't given the exact brand name and model number to your TV here for reference. Anyway, if it is an LCD TV, check its CCFL tubes behind the LCD panel for uniform brightness. There will be more that 12 numbers of them. All of them must emit light of same intensity. OK.

SOURCE: My 50" Plasma has developed a band across the middle of the TV

I would have it looked at before saying it is burn in, a BLACK horizontal line across the set is loss of data to the display from the Y-drive panel. This is something the customer should not attempt anyway, however, if it is either the upper or lower drive board they are not that expensive. Let me know the outcome.

SOURCE: my smamsung lcd tv has thick horizontal lines

You have what we call 60 Cycle Hum Bar. You also might have audio hum too. The problem is a grounding issue either coming from the source such as a Cable Box or a Sat box. More often this occurs with cable boxes. First unplug the source box from the tv completely. You will find that the Lines have disappeared. Next connect a Coax cable coming from the wall bypassing the Box to the RF input on the tv. If you still have the Lines, then the problem is with the Cable signal not being correctly grounded and you need to call the Cable co.. The Cable box can also be causing this as well. If all of this does not work then try using another set of Component cables as they can cause the same issue.

What must I replace to fix tv that show horizontal line across the screen

I would say your TV has Frame or Field collapse (white line in the middle) firstly if its there for any length of time you will have a burn line across the tube's inside which will be there for evermore.
This fault is mostly down to an IC which deals with this part of a TV and will be different in each brand of TV also the set will have a fusible device like a resistor to isolate a defective area this would have blown. This IC would be mostly alone fixed to a heatsink near to a plug at least with four thick wires leading to a large coil mass around your tubes neck for identification. Though what you need is an understanding in TV repairs plus a service manual because that IC may have blown because of problems due to other related components and experience is key here to look and understand. Please be aware there are high voltages in a TV some stay charged up for a good while, if you do not think you will be able to do this be safe do not start! call an engineer it may be cheaper in the long run and safer.

White line only, has sound, may be 14 yrs old.

Hello
If there is a white line across the screen, the vertical output section of your TV is faulty. If the line is vertical at the middle of the screen, horizontal deflection yoke doesn't get sweep signal. You haven't mentioned about the full mode number of your RCA TV. Therefore I can only give you this much hint. OK.

My 50" Plasma has developed a band across the middle of the TV

All I can say is when you watch T.V. the plasmas run off of plasma gas and when you leave something on for so long it burns in the screen. I have the same T.V. and when watching like the weather channel it leaves lines but they go away. If yours are permanent then you can't do anything, but it may help if you go on your remote and go to "menu" then look for "setup" and scroll down with the arrows on your remote. Look for "screen burn protection" and select "white screen". This will make your whole screen white and it may take out the lines. If you let it sit white it won't hurt it. All one color won't hurt, the only thing that hurts is like bright white lines in front of a dark background. Just give your T.V. a break from time to time ESPECIALLY ON VIDEO GAMES. T.V. shows that are HD usually have their channel icons that move or are very dim and they won't hurt. Just go to what I told you and let it sit about 20 minutes, if that doesn't help, then the T.V. you have i believe comes with a 2-year standard warranty and if it's under warranty take it back if you have the reciept. If you don't have the reciept then call 1-800-SAMSUNG.

It sounds like a vertical deflection problem. You mentioned you had a white HORIZONTAL LINE in the middle of the screen. If this line runs from left to right across the screen it's in Verticla deflection. If it runs from top to bottom, it's in Horizontal deflection. I am assuming the problem is a Vertical deflaecion problem. The repairs necessary are most likley to replace the vertical capacitors or the verticla deflection chip.

It sounds to me like you're describing the re-trace of the unit. It is repairable, and more so the sooner you get it to the repair facility.

POP and noothiing

yes it can still be fixed! the pop sound you've heard maybe came from a blown capacitor in the vertical deflection circuits. this symptom, sometimes called the tube light effect, it is characterised by a bright thin horizontal line across the middle of the screen. this symptom is caused by a breakdown in the vertical deflection circuit. hence maybe the trouble maybe in the vertical oscillator, amplifier or output circuits. but if all i have said is not clear to you, better bring it to a qualified tv technician. good luck!
