A card reader is a device that connects to your computer, usually via USB or FireWire. It then makes the memory card appear to the computer as an external hard drive. You can then copy files (including pictures and videos) to and from the computer as if it were any other hard drive. Using one is usually the best way to download pictures from a digital camera.

search for your cannon model number on canons webpage and download the software. You should be able to use the camera via usb without it though. Your pc will see it as an external storage device. Your pics will be in the DCIM folder.

It's probably not your camera. Microsoft updates frequently cause problems with our equipment. That's why pros use card readers and eliminate the headaches.

Forget about downloading from the camera. Do it the easy way. If your computer does not have a built in SD card reader, buy one. They can be had for $20 or less. Remove your memory card from your camera (it is located in the battery compartment), insert it in the card reader and simply copy the file to your hard drive using drag-n-drop or copy and paste.

I'm suddenly unable to download from my Nikon L22 Coolpix have had no trouble in the past

You didn't say if you are leaving the memory card in your camera and connecting it to the computer with a USB cable or if you remove the card from the camera and use a card reader. Eaither way should work, but if one dosn't, the other should. In either case, consider that from your computer's perspective, the memory card in your camera is no different then an external hard drive. You can access the folders on the memory card in exactly the same way you access any other folder on your computer (Mac or PC). Just copy and paste your pictures from the folder on the camera's memory to a new folder with an appropriate name on your computer. You do not need Nikon's or any other third-party software to do this.

ALTERNATE WAY TO TRANSFER PHOTOS TO COMPUTER
If your photos are stored on the memory card, then remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader. Connect this USB memory card reader and memory card into the USB port of your working computer. Your computer will see this as an USB Mass Storage Device or an external storage device; you can then open the folder on the memory card and copy the photos to your computer. Memory card reader is a handy device and is inexpensive. You can copy photos from other cameras and you can also download photos off your memory card to someone else's computer without the need of installing any programs.

My computer suddenly does not recognize my camera so I am unable to download pictures

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as PIcasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).

My new t21 display said "unable to access card" my

If you are using the camera to download pictures to the computer you should be able to set around this problem by purchasing a card reader. These plug into the USB port and the camera SD card plugs into the reader, the computer then loos at the SD card as an external Hard Drive. Create a new folder in ? "My Documents" transfer the files from the camera memory card (copy past) into the new folder and you have your pictures not on the computer hard drive.

Do a "safely remove" "eject" or what ever language you computer uses to shut off the connection and disconnect the memory card from the reader.

Format the memory card in the camera always format the memory card after downloading pictures to the computer and always make sure it has completed the download and you have turned off the feed.

Failing this your do two things corrupt the card and possibly the camera software.

Okay another thing that the SD card have is a lock I'm giving you a diagram to see and make sure the card is in the write position.

You should be good to go

Unable to download pictures to computer

Hello and welcome to FixYa

Please go to a electronics store and buy a USB card reader. I bought one last week and it cost $0.5 so its cheap as dirt. Then simply remove the card from your camera , pop it into the reader and the pictures will appear on a drive like a flashdrive in your my computer folder.

This is a much better option than using the camera's cable as it is faster , safer , saves on your camera battery and you don't need to install any software or drivers.

The card reader will most likely also still be compatible with any new camera you buy in future.

Kind Regards
Andrea

Suddenly unable to transfer photos into Nikon Picture Perfect

How are you transferring the photos? Are you using a cable, or a card reader? If you are using a cable then most likely the cable went bad. I have a D-1 and a D-2, and I never use the firewire cable. I put the CF cards into a card reader. If you are not using a card reader then try that. You can get a decent one from E-Film or from most any computer store.

One more step to try, did you format the card in the camera when you first loaded the card in? On my cameras you need to format that card to have them work with the camera.
