This is a very common problem with these magellan 3140 and also the 3100,2000,2200t,2500,4000,4040 and the 4050most likely the power port is damaged and needs replaced.i have these power ports but often they just need re soldered..i can repair these magellan gps if you need help. if i cant fix it there is no charge.wmetz@comcast.net ...to open the case on a 4040 you must start on the power button side, otherwise youll break the unit

Compaq CQ1-1225 AIO Wont Start at all. Removed all components


Suggestions;

Anti-Static wrist strap connected to ground source, and your wrist;

1) The jack your AC adapter plugs into on the motherboard, is the DC Power Jack.
Motherboard out of case, power to motherboard, take your multimeter and see if you are getting 19 VDC at the DC Power Jack's positive solder joint, on motherboard.

The center pin of the jack is Positive. (The inner cylindrical shell is Negative)
Follow the DC Power Jack's positive pin from the Center of the jack, to the motherboard.

You probably won't be able to touch your meter's Positive (Red) probe, to the DC Power Jack's positive pin under the jack; so touch it's solder joint on the opposite side of the motherboard.
(DC Power Jack should be soldered close to the motherboard, is why)

Of course also touch the Negative lead, (Black probe), of your meter, to the Negative, (Ground) solder joint for the DC Power Jack.

Getting 19 volts DC?

See if there is a cracked solder joint, for any of the DC Power Jack's pin connections to the motherboard.
ANY perceptible movement of the DC Power Jack on the motherboard, indicates a bad power jack, and may indicate a broken/cracked solder joint.
Center pin of DC Power Jack is loose? Bad DC Power Jack. Replace.

2) DC Power Jack is determined to be in good repair? No cracked/broken solder joints?
The next components in the power circuit on the motherboard, leading From the power jack, are P. MOSFET's.

3) The last thing that concerns me, although I probably should have listed it first; is the AC adapter you are using.
Concern is that it doesn't have the 'intelligent chipset' that matches the Compaq CQ1-1225 All-In-One desktop PC's circuitry.

Amilio laptop not charging in spite of new charger


please measure the output for your charger,normally they have 19.5 vdc exactly, if they do not measure the adapter is faulty, repair or replace.If the output is o.k the battery can be faulty. Use the software diagnostic coming with the computer, restart the computer HOLD the key f2 or esc depending of your computer model, and make the diagnostic.try again and see what is the result, if the battery is o.k or faulty.God bless you

Zinzee, check the AC adapter first. (Charger)
Wiggle the power cord from AC adapter to surge protector.
See if the AC adapter LED power on light, blinks.
Yes? Bad power cord.

No change?
Go on.

The port on your laptop that the AC adapter plugs into, is the DC Power Jack.
Wiggle the cable from DC Power Jack to AC adapter.
Power On LED light up, or blink?

Change? New AC adapter. (Also need to check DC Power Jack center pin, to ensure problem is cable, not DC Power jack)
No Change?
Go on.

Unplug the AC adapter from the surge protector. You will need a multimeter now.
An economical multimeter can be purchased for as little as $5 to $12. Available at a multitude of stores. An auto parts store is but one example. (Not for $5 probably )

The Function Knob is set to DC Voltage. (DCV)
If just a symbol it is a dotted line over a solid line.

The center hole in the plug of the cable that goes to the DC Power Jack, is the Positive connection. This is where the RED probe lead (Positive), of the multimeter goes to.

The outside cylindrical metal shell of the plug is the Negative connection. This is what the BLACK probe lead (Negative), touches against.

You should read very close to 19 Volts (DC)

Have an assistant wiggle the AC adapter cable to DC Power Jack.
AC adapter is good? No intermittent reading on multimeter?
Go on.

Remove the Battery. Take a No.2 pencil, and use the eraser to GENTLY, see if you can wiggle the center pin around, of the DC Power Jack in the laptop. (DC_IN)

ANY perceptible movement means a problem with the DC Power Jack.

Underneath the large Main view, there are 4 smaller views. Click on the one all the way to the right.
This is a view of the Back of the DC Power Jack, and the side that faces in on the laptop.

Note the L-shaped prongs on each side of the jack. These go down into the motherboard, and are soldered to the motherboard.
The 3 vertical lugs you see on the back, are the power, and Ground connections for the jack, and are also connected to the motherboard.

1) The center pin of the jack mounts to the jack's body, like a rivet. It is squished on the back, and this holds it in place.
Very easy to break that mount, and loosen the center pin.

2) The connections on the back are soldered, as previously stated, as are the 'L prongs' on the sides. Solder connections are also known as Solder Joints. If the jack moves with the pencil, and it seems to not just be the center pin, one or more of these solder joints could be cracked. (Broken)

Number 1 above means P-r-o-p-e-r-ly removing the DC Power Jack, and properly soldering a new one in.

Number 2 above just means re-soldering cracked solder joints.

DC Power Jack proves to be good?
Go on.

At this point those who use the moniker 'Technician', but in reality aren't a tech, will want to replace the motherboard.
In reality the Power MOSFET's should be checked, to see if they are good.

IMHO a $4 to $5 P.MOSFET (Or two of them), is much cheaper than a $200 motherboard.
Of course if there is $125 to $150 in labor, the savings isn't that great.

Buy an ESD wrist strap, connect it's alligator clip to a good ground source, remove the motherboard, buy the DC Power Jack, and take both to the tech. Should be about $50 labor, or less to replace the Power MOSFET/s. (May not be both of them, just one)

What does the AC do? (Alternating Current)

Apparently not get rectified into DC electricity by the AC adapter, (Charger), or the rectified AC (Which is now DC), is not getting to the laptop.

Be sure the Battery is still good. They have a lifespan, and only last so long.

Verify, by performing a DC Voltage test with a multimeter, if the AC adapter is putting out the correct Voltage.

If it is an AC adapter for an HP Compaq NC6400 Notebook PC, the DC Voltage coming out of the AC adapter is supposed to be
18.5 Volts. (DC),

On the AC adapter plug going to the laptop, the center pin is the Positive connection.

ANY perceptible movement means a problem with the DC Power Jack.

Note that in both views the jack is shown upside down, in relation to how it actually sits on the motherboard.

The view on the left, (Back view), shows Prongs coming from the jack, that go down through the motherboard, and are then soldered.

The gold colored prong is the Positive prong. It goes to the Center Pin of the jack.
All of the silvery colored Prongs are for Ground, or Negative.

Where the Prongs are soldered to the motherboard, are called solder joints. Each prong has a solder joint.

It may just be that one, or more solder joints are cracked.
This would require disassembling the laptop down to the bare motherboard in your hand, then re -soldering any cracked solder joints.

[ Be SURE to use an ESD wrist strap, and have it's alligator clip connected to a good ground source, BEFORE working inside a laptop ]

It may be however that the DC Power Jack is damaged, and replacement is necessary.

If the DC Power Jack checks out, you have a bad power correcting chipset. This is a type of Power MOSFET.
Motherboard replacement is the solution.

Total Power Failure When Using the AC Adapter


1) Check the AC adapter. Use a multimeter set to DC Voltage, (Symbol is a dotted line over a solid line)

You aren't checking for voltage output, so much, as you are checking for an intermittent break.

AC adapter plugged into power, and probe leads of the multimeter touching the plug of the AC adapter going to the laptop, have an assistant gently wiggle;

1) First the power cord going to the AC adapter.
2) Then the cable from the AC adapter TO the laptop.

If you get an intermittent reading on the multimeter, you have a broken wire in the AC adapter cable, or power cord.

2) If the AC adapter shows VERY close, to the voltage it's supposed to be putting out, AND there is no intermittent break, go to the DC Power Jack.

[ A economical multimeter can be purchased for around $8 to $12.
Available in a multitude of stores. An auto parts store is but one example.

Analog, (Meter with needle), or digital is fine.

Multimeter's vary in style.
It will have a Function knob in the center. This is turned to DC Voltage.
As stated, if just a symbol, it is a dotted line over a solid line.
IF, there is more than one DC Voltage scale, set it to the 0 - 50 Volt scale.

The red probe lead is the Positive lead.
The black probe lead is the Negative probe lead.
You are testing DC Voltage. There is a Positive, and a Negative.

The plug of the AC adapter, that plugs into the DC Power Jack on the laptop, will have a Positive connection, and a Negative connection.

Plugs vary. The most common is a plug with a center hole, and a surrounding metal cylindrical shell.

The Center hole is Positive.
The outer cylindrical metal shell is Negative.

Depending on what laptop we are discussing here, the DC Power Jack can be soldered directly to the motherboard, OR it has a cable attached to it, and the cable plugs into the motherboard.
(DC Power Harness)

IF, it is the solder to the motherboard type, it has prongs, or pins, that come out of the bottom of the DC Power Jack, and goes through the motherboard. Then the prongs, or pins, are soldered to the motherboard.

With this style, if the DC Power Jack is bumped, the solder joints of those pins, may be cracked. Makes a bad contact.

Could also be bad enough to make a Short. (Laptop turns off when AC adapter is plugged in)

The DC Power Jack itself may be in bad repair.
Using as an example of the style that has a Center hole, and a surrounding cylindrical metal shell, (Inside), if the two parts touch, you can have a Short.

The diagnoses is to start with removing ALL power, AC adapter ('Natch), and Battery.
See with a small wooden object, if you can gently wiggle the DC Power Jack.

ANY perceptible movement means a bad DC Power Jack.
You will also have to partially disassemble the laptop, to check the DC Power Jack solder connections, to the motherboard.

3) DC Power Jack checks out, the problem has gone serious.

Mounted to the laptop motherboard is a power controller chipset.
It is a power MOSFET,

If you open the laptop, and view the motherboard, this problem will be readily apparent. This chipset usually burns, and turns blackish.

Both of these chipsets uses a D2PAK surface mount.
The leads are bent into a J shape. ( J Lead)

The 'foot' of the J lead is soldered to a copper pad on the motherboard.
(Copper Pad has a thin gold plating on it)

Simple de-soldering/soldering techniques, are used to Remove the chipset.
HOWEVER, use a Heatsink on EACH J lead, when soldering the new chipset in.

Advent N270 netbook will not charge. Orange light comes on initially then goes off. Also when I wiggle the plug into the laptop the light flashes on and intermittently.


It sounds like either a bad connection on the motherboard or a broken wire in the adapter making intermittent connection.

1. With the power adapter disconnected, do you have a power light? This would indicate the adapter is good and the plug is questionable.

2. Check your power adapter output with a multi-meter.(be sure to wiggle the wires around) If the power fluctuates, replace the plug.

3. If the power is solid, replace the motherboard connector.

The jack on the laptop that you plug the AC adapter (Charger) into, is called a DC Power Jack.

The middle photo, and the photo to the right, shows copper prongs that protrude out of the jack.

The view to the right shows the jack upside down, in relation to how it's mounted on the motherboard.
The prongs go through the motherboard, and are soldered to circuit traces on the motherboard.
(For simplification, think of circuit traces as being very thin flat copper wires on the motherboard)

There is data stating that the solder joints have a tendency to crack, even with normal usage of just plugging, and unplugging the AC adapter.
It is also stated that the motherboard area where the DC Power Jack is mounted, is of a bad design.
Many have had the motherboard replaced, ($400 to $500), only to have the same problem come up later.

It has also been stated that the manufacturer states replacing the AC adapter, but has been shown to no avail in solving the problem.
Same thing comes up for the Dell Inspiron e1705.
(I know, I'm just a 'Ray of Sunshine')

A cracked solder joint, or cracked solder joints make an intermittent contact. When the DC Power Jack is in a certain position with the AC adapter plugged in, the contact may be good. Moved around by plugging in the AC adapter again, the position may change, and result in an intermittent contact, or no contact at all.

Result?
Laptop will not power off of the AC adapter, nor will the AC adapter charge the battery.
This is the reason why the laptop will run straight off of the battery, but the battery isn't being charged back up.

It could also be that the damage is further than a cracked solder joint, or cracked solder joints.
One of the prongs could have come loose from it's mounting, and no longer be attached to the pin it's supposed to be attached to.

[ The AC adapter converts AC {Alternating Current} electricity from your household, or business, into DC electricity.
{Direct Current. Batteries are an example of stored DC electricity}

DC uses two connections. A Positive connection, and a Negative connection.
One of the prongs is for the Positive connection, another one is for the Negative connection. The other prongs are used for stability, to mount the DC Power Jack in place to the motherboard. Generally the center pin/s are for a Positive connection, the outer pin/s are for the Negative connection ]

Unless I had the laptop in my hand, I can only give you a generalization of what may be wrong, and the possible solution to repair it.

1) All power to the laptop removed, (AC adapter and Battery), see if you can wiggle the DC Power Jack around. Any perceptible movement is bad.

2) Past this point the laptop will have to be completely disassembled, down to the bare motherboard in your hand. Requires visual inspection of the solder joints for the DC Power Jack, and the surrounding circuit traces.

It may be something as simple as resoldering a cracked solder joint. (Or joints)
It may go further into replacing the DC Power Jack.
It may still go further if the area on the motherboard where the DC Power Jack is mounted, has cracked.

You or a tech may not be able to mount a new DC Power Jack.
This would require a workaround, IF feasible. Won't be aesthetically appealing, however.

1) Buy an wear an ESD wrist strap. (Electro Static Discharge) The average cost is around $3 to $8.
Connect the alligator clip to a good ground source. I connect to the metal frame of an empty desktop computer case.
Observe Anti-Static Precautions.

[Your body carries static electricity. Static will fry out (Short Circuit) the hardware components inside a computer. Wear the ESD wrist strap, and connect it to a good ground when working on the laptop.
Should you leave in the middle of working on your laptop, upon your return be SURE to put the ESD wrist strap back on ]

2) There may be as many as 60 screws, and 12 different types of screws. Do Not mix them up.
Use a multi-compartment container for the screws. Mark each compartment for the area the screws came out of. Do not stack them neatly on a table. Recipe for disaster.
You can use a clean egg container in a pinch. Mark each egg holder.

3) Use Solder Wick, (Desoldering Braid) to remove the old solder. Do not use a Desoldering Tool.

4) Make sure the area of the circuit trace that you have removed solder from is CLEAN. The links above will detail more about this. Make sure the circuit trace areas are pre-tinned with solder, before inserting the DC Power Jack's prongs. Don't worry if the hole in the circuit trace is covered with solder from tinning.
You can heat it up to insert the prong. (One prong at a time)

5) DO NOT linger too long with the soldering iron, (40 to 50 Watt) This can render a circuit trace useless.
It will burn it, (And the motherboard), and render the circuit trace useless from accepting the tinning.
(Solder it applied to the area to be soldered in a light coat. = Tinning)
Linger too long, and you can lift the circuit trace right off of the motherboard.

MY GATEWAY LAPTOP NO LONGER RECEIVES POWER.


Motherboard or harddrive? I'm betting it's more towards the motherboard. The DC Power Jack to be more specific. This is the port where the AC adapter, (Charger), plug is plugged into.

The DC Power Jack is not much bigger, than the plug for the AC adapter that plugs into it. There are small pin leads that are on the bottom of this jack, and they go through the motherboard, and are soldered to the motherboard.

Accidental bumping of the AC adapter plug, while plugged into the DC Power Jack, can damage the jack. It can break the connections for the adapter plug, and/or can crack the solder joints for those small pin leads.

[Laptops use DC electricity. A flashlight battery, and a laptop battery, are examples of stored DC electricity. DC electricity has two poles. Positive and Negative. The DC Power Jack has two connections. Positive and Negative. {Even if the DC Power Jack has multiple holes in it]

There is also another known problem associated with DC Power Jacks. It may stem from a bad motherboard design.

More to the point, the area where the DC Power Jack mounts on the motherboard. In this design, the DC Power Jack motherboard area, is almost a separate part of the motherboard. It's shaped like a Peninsula. (Think of an island, with one side connected to the mainland)

This peninsula shape, has the tendency to crack away from the main body of the motherboard. Circuit traces are broken.

When the AC adapter plug is setting in a certain position, it presses the two broken halves of the circuit traces together, for a momentary contact. As the AC adapter plug is moved from this position, the circuit trace halves are moved apart, and there is no contact.

(No distribution of electricity from one circuit trace half, to the other circuit trace half. Think of a circuit trace as a very, thin, flat copper wire. When a circuit trace is broken, there is essentially a wire that is broken into two parts)

Solution?
See if the DC Power Jack can be repaired, (Solder joint connections re-soldered), or replaced.
If the DC Power Jack motherboard area is the aforementioned peninsula shape, it may require replacement of the motherboard.

There are very FEW, computer repair shops that have the technical expertise to replace a DC Power Jack. Easy fix is to simply replace the motherboard. (More $$$$$ too)

However, some laptops DO require replacement of the motherboard for this repair.
Bad motherboard design, for the DC Power Jack area on the motherboard.

Re-solder DC Power Jack solder joints? (IF, this is the problem) Average is $50 to $75 (US)
Replace DC Power Jack? Average is $125 to $150. (US)
Replace motherboard? Depends on the Gateway model. Could be $225 to $400 (US)

[Yes, most of the time the cost warrants just replacing the laptop itself, as the cost of replacing, is close to the repair cost)

Just to SHOW you ab average DC Power Jack, and the repair involved of replacing. (Doesn't show you, that the entire laptop needs to be disassembled, down to the bare motherboard in hand)

This is NOT a recommendation to replace the DC Power Jack yourself! It is just for knowledge of what is partially involved. (You can accidentally burn the motherboard when desoldering, or soldering, rendering the motherboard useless)

It may be that you need a new, (Or good condition used), motherboard. You may not.

The problem could be the DC Power Jack. The DC Power Jack is small, and the body is made of plastic. Sometimes there is a metal shell around the plastic body. (The jack is a rectangular shape, and is just a little larger, than the outside portion of that AC adapter plug!)

As you know there is a metal pin in the center, and at the back of the round hole, there are flat metal contacts.

Let me explain the construction of a DC Power Jack, and how it's mounted to a motherboard. This all has relevance to the solution.

Your laptop uses DC electricity. (The AC adapter converts AC to DC. Your laptop battery, and a flashlight battery, are examples of stored DC electricity)

DC uses a Positive connection, and a Negative connection. The metal pin in the center is Positive. The flat metal strips at the back are Negative.

That laptop DC Power Jack has metal prongs, that come out of the plastic body. One prong, (Or pin), connects to the Positive metal round pin, in the center of the jack.
There may be one, or two prongs, (Or pins), that come out of the plastic body, and connect to the Negative side of the jack. (Flat metal strips)
These prongs go down through holes in the motherboard, and are soldered on.

With the AC adapter plugged in, an accidental bump on the plug itself, could break the body of the jack, or break solder joints that hold the jack to the motherboard.

AC adapter removed, and battery removed. Use a NON-metallic object, and see if you can make the center pin of the jack move. See if the entire jack itself seems to move.
A.If the center pin moves, you have a broken DC Power Jack.
B.If the entire jack moves, you have cracked solder joints. (Broken)

Replacement of the DC Power Jack for A.
Re-solder the solder joint/s for B.

Cost of replacing a jack at a reputable computer repair shop? $90 to $150
Cost of re-soldering solder joints? $50 to $90
Cost of replacing the motherboard?
$250 on up.

If you are a skilled person with the correct tools, it is feasible for you to replace the jack, or re-solder the solder joints.
It is also feasible that you yourself, could replace the motherboard.

Some laptops have a poor motherboard design, for where the DC Power Jack is mounted to the motherboard.

Crude explanation would be, that the main body of the motherboard is a 1 foot square. Then a 2 inch square comes out of the side of the main body.
The DC Power Jack is mounted to that 2 inch square. From accidental bumping, OR just normal usage of inserting, and removing the AC adapter plug, this 2 inch square can crack away from the main body.
This, of course would require a motherboard replacement.

No ac power but plugged in


If you plugged in the ac adapter, and you still get no power and cannot turn it on, the first thing to check is the AC adapter. Get a voltage meter, set it to 200 DC, put the positive on the inside and the ground on the outside. Unless you have a highpower alienware laptop, it should read +/- 20 V, most likely 19.xx. If your AC adapter is good, then the DC jack, what the adapter plugs into, is bad. In this case, the laptop will have to be disassembled, the mother boared removed, the old DC jack de-soldered and taken off, and a new DC jack soldered on. You would really need to take it to a qualified techninician at a shop to di it.
