Question about Canon Optura 40 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

Canon Optura 40 playback - only get blue screen - no image, no sound

Hi there,

I've owned my Canon Optura 40 for almost 4 years. To date, it's performed flawlessly recording many important moments of our children. Two days ago, it stopped playing back video and sound. All I am able to get from the playback is a blue screen.

I'd hate to think it's cooked... any ideas before I'm forced to replace it, especially now that my son is starting to crawl???

Desperate,

Peter

bought a head cleaning tape & ran it for 10 sec. as per directions. Didn't work.

    Any other ideas?

The good news is that the final solution seems to be correct. The bad news is I've had to buy a replacement mini DV camera. I'm not willing to spend the time / money to ship back to Canon only to tell me it will be $200 to fix the dated camera...

Thank you for your quick responses!

    Peter

Try a cleaning tape. Buy a good quality cleaning tape (Panasonic makes one) and remember: cleaning tapes are abrasive so don't overuse it! Overuse can result in the need to replace the rotating drum assy in the camcorder. I'll bet a cleaning tape takes care of your problem.

Your drum MAY have reached the end of it's life. The symptoms are the same as a clogged or dirty video head, but the news isn't as good. You'll have to have the camcorder serviced. If I remember correctly, that particular camcorder has been deignated by Canon as factory service only, meaning that they don't supply parts and service information to techs and you'll have to return the camcorder to Canon for service. I am truly sorry for this; I had hoped that the camcorder just needed cleaning. One other thing; since your symptom did not improve, you could try running the cleaning tape for up to 30 seconds. Occasionally, a stubborn clog may not clean out during a 10 second cleaning period. You won't hurt anything by trying a 30 second cleaning.

My Optura 300 worked fine for years but now is only filming indoors. The moment I step outside the screen goes white and that is what is filming as well.

Sound like a malfunctioning CCD (Charge Coupled Device) image sensor. Rare, but possible problem with your LCD screenviewer... in both cases (LCD or CCD) this isn't a job that you could solve yourself; this wrong include distorted images or abnormal colors, scratchy purple lines, blank or black pictures, and/or black videos with good sound being recorded on the camera's flash card.

I suggest check this link for additional details in this previous solutions for an Defective CCD and next contact your Canon service.
I strongly suggest (taking into consideration the age of your camera) to evaluate the cost of repair versus the cost of a new camera with similar features, before making a final desicion.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

There is a well known, but little publicised problem with CCDs on many cameras. Ther was a manufacturing problem in the components. Visit the Canon web site and look up the problem. They will tell you where to send it for free repair

Wont record anything to MiniDV tape and A/D randomly working

Hello,

Sorry about delayed reply as I just saw it.

Its known problem of ccd imager in Canon ZR85 camcorder and ccd imager needs to be replaced.

Canon will repair your camcorder free of cost as per announced scheme for ccd imager issue.

Click Canon CCD Advisory for details, how to get free repair.

Regarding can't see picture or time code in playback, it is problem of dirty / clogged video heads. Use good quality video head cleaning cassette to clean heads and hope camera will show playback picture.

Good luck.

Mv600i digital video camcorder - no image on lcd screen in cam or playback mode

please someone help with this. My camcoder works very well when watching things I've filmed before but when I want to record it does not function. All I get on the LCD screen is the blue screen with Canon on it and through the lens it is black. The lens cap is of course removed. Then when I turn the red button to off position the camcoder does not turn off and the screen remains blue. I have to remove the battery to turn it off.
I've had my camera for 4 years and I filmed so many precious family moments in it.

Sound is ok, but do not record images.

I have had the same problem since I purchased mine 4 years ago and it has been repaired 3x and is in the shop for a 4th. I had the extended warranty and Futureshop refuses to acknowledge that it is a Lemon and should be replaced as they don't consider resoldering wires as a "repair". My unit has been in the service center a total of 12 weeks over the 4 years. The service center recommends Sony Camcorders and the Claim center said they get few Sony camcorders so I would say the Canon problem is an issue that is common. Sorry to say. Mike
