SOURCE: mtd rear tine garden tiller . The wheeles will

Could be the shifter inside the gearbox or it could be a stripped gear or broken chain. The bad news is you will have to remove the gearbox from the engine and then open the gearbox to see what is going on. This is quite time consuming but taking to a shop for this is very expensive due to the labor involved. You can do it yourself if you pay attention to how you take it apart. I hope this helps you out.

Transmission tiller replacement

The transmission is the main mounting point for everything else on the tiller. Everything needs to be removed from it including : engine, handle, covers, wheels, weights, etc. until you are left with the bare transmission. there will be a set of axles protruding on each side for the wheels and tines. Since replacement parts are available and you have it torn down this far you may as well open it up and see what failed. It may just be a chain, or if its been sitting for a long time and wont shift maybe cleaning and lubing the shift drum will solve your problem. Place the transmission on its side using blocks to level and stabilize it. remove all the perimeter screws, there are a few other bolts which need to be removed as well. split the halves. you will need to work around the perimeter as the seal is quite stubborn. Then inspect the inside for the failed part.

I put the machine sideways and the transmission oil spill out how do i put it back in the transmission and the machine doesn't start

Those transmissions are sealed .motor oil is what you might be seeing. .Most of those transmissions has grease on a drive chain inside . I cut one open along the edges then prayed it open when mine quit pulling. I had to read gear to shaft and re welded the case.

I need to change the gear shift that broke off in the transmission do i have to split it open all the way to change it

Craftsman tillers usually use a chain drive transmission. Sears does not usually offer individual parts for these transmission. They want you to replace the entire trans assembly. If the gear shaft is available (www.searspartsdirect.com) , then yeas, you would have to split the case all the way open to replace it. This is not an easy job. Most major repair shops would charge 4 or 5 hours of shop time for this repair. It generally requires complete dissassembly of the tiller to remove the transmission.

You did not give a model # for your tiller, so I am only giving you general solutions. Please look up the parts. Many times it is more cost effective to replace your tiller than it is to repair it. Remember that all of the other gear shafts are the same age as the one that broke and have been through the same stresses.

Good luck!

1980 pony rear tine tiller: when I put it into gear it just sits there and will suddenly lurch ahead uncontrollably.

That will happen when the tines are engaged while the wheels are in Neutral as the tines simply drive the whole machine forward without the drag of the wheels being in gear. If the wheel transmission is engaged and this is still happening, then you have need for repair.

Tiller starts runs for 30 seconds then quits

Make sure the choke is off, use fresh gas and if that doesn't work it sounds like a gas problem meaning it is starving for gas or running rich. brucewo
