it does just what it says . its a great feature . in auto shift mode the pot will be on high untill it reaches full boil or a pre set time has gone by .... most people start there crock pots on high and turn them to low when it gets cooking .....this does it for you ... happy crock poting ...Please if this answer helped , please rate this 3 or 4 stars . and keep me in the paid answer department . A 1 or 2 may knock me down into the unpaid ranks. Thanks Cactus Bob .

The auto button is ususally it startts off on high setting to warm up the crock and when it reaches a pre set temperature it will shift to med or low which ever is the next lower setting it will continue cooking at this setting unless you change it

The auto setting cooks on high for the first hour, then adjusts the setting to low for the remaining cooking time.
Auto Shift allows the slow cooker to heat up to high and then internally shift down to low, so it gives more flexibility in cooking time. Example: A certain recipe may take 4 hours on high, 5-6 hours on Auto Shift and 7-8 hours on Low.

the warm setting to cook or reheat food.

6. For other recipes that give a range of times, select the time closest
to the setting on your Smart-Pot™. For instance a recipe calling for
cooking time of 7 to 9 hours on LOW, set your Smart-Pot™ to 8 hours.
NOTE: If power goes off then power light will blink and settings must be
reset. If cook time is changed before the cycle is complete the time will
reset to the new setting.
