Dimension 8400 - BIOS upgrade failed

I had a HDD failure while updating the BIOS to version 09. Now if I start the computer I can only hear the fan and that's it. I do not have any monitor signal, nothing. Can this be fixed? Is there any way I could get the motherboard and BIOS models?

Appreciate your help,

Stefan

Try checking the settings on the cd drive and harddrive if one is set to slave and the other is set to master try changing the jumpers on the back of them so that the one that is set to slave is now set to master and vice versa

Dell 8400 a c diagnostic lights on amber

Henry,

The Amber A and C signifies a failure to post. Computers Post BIOS to Processor, then RAM, then back to Processor before initializing the other devices. Try reseating the RAM or replacing it before you go further.
If you have upgraded the devices within the PC recently, you should consider that you should not be running anything less than a 350W power supply.

I hope this helps.

Dell 8400 Boots to Black Error Screen in XP States to reinstall System 32

This might be caused by hard-drive failure. You should run hard drive test from BIOS to make sure hard drive is ok. You can access BIOS by pressing F2 during start up, from there start hard disk self test and wait for it to complete.

If hard drive is ok after test, insert in your original Windows installation media and reinstall OS.

A friend gave me a dimension 8400 desktop that he said was broken. i know some about computers and tried to see what the problem was. everytime i turn the computer on, the cpu cooling fan goes crazy...

Thanks for the information, pretty detailed, I recommend you get all the specs of the Dell dimension 8400 motherboard and buy a compatible one, of course check the CPU first at a friend's home and if the CPU is fine, go ahead and buy and install a new one.

How to upgrade BIOS in my XW400?

Upgrading the BIOS is an easy task but not recommended unless your computer has a problem which will be solved by a BIOS upgrade.

I assume that you are aware that a failed upgrade may render you system unusable till it is reloaded. Primary cause of a failed upgrade is a power failure so please make sure your PC has a back-up power source in case of a power failure.

The latest BIOS update can be downloaded from this website.

Download the exe file on your desktop and double click on run it. It is to be used on Win XP or 2000.

Before upgrading, check the version of your BIOS. If the version number is same as the one with you are upgrading, it means you have already the latest BIOS and it is not necessary to upgrade. The version number of this BIOS is 3.06 Revision A.

Dell 8400 No Boot, not even POST

It sounds like your bios were improperly flashed or went bad. The X300 SE message is your video card. So your video card works, the system mostly works, but the BIOS isn't starting up. You should contact Dell and tell them the situation.

Dimension 8400 locks up. Keyboard won't respond.

Generally and indication of a software issue that is locking the system. There can be hardware causes too.

  1. Run diags on the system (From Resource CD or F12 menu) see if any failure. If you have a hardware failure then address it and see if the problem is solved.
  2. Update bios and drivers from support.dell.com
  3. Edit MSCONFIG, startup group, remove entries that are not required (Generally only AV and printer scanner items are needed here, most other items will function without and item here)
  4. Edit the Virtual Memory settings, and set it to Custom and an amount double the RAM (EG: 4 GB RAM set initial and Mas to 8200 MB VRAM)

What is max size HDD for a Dimension 8400

As far as I know, there is no known maximum size. If you are making it a slave drive, you need to go into your system's BIOS and tell the computer you have a new HDD.

Restart your PC, and you will either need to hit your F2 key or Delete key repeatedly on boot. Just watch the top right corner of your monitor to know which button to hit.

Once you're in BIOS, just move to the hardware section or hard drive section and make the necessary changes.

Reboot and enjoy!

My dell dimension 8400 bios a03 fails to bootup and displays this alert on the screen: Many attempts to boot the system have failed at checkpoint [Ithr]. how can i recover from this?

You need to reset your bios settings. Open your case and remove the cmos battery for 10 minutes. Caution: unplug all ac plugs before you open your case. put the battery back in and turn it on you should see an error message saying: you need to set system time and date. If you see this then you have successfully reset your bios settings and the defaults should load up. follow the instructions to change your time and date settings and save. reboot and hopefully you can boot up. I hope this works.

I want to backup my BIOS to a disk for emergency use.

I've done over 100 bios upgrades / flashes / etc and not once have I ever had any need to restore a backed up bios.

Here's what I found on the net

Hope this helps, it's not a solution per say but honestly it's probably overkill backing up that bios file FYI.

Best of luck!
