I have the same problem but I have been using it and then all of a sudden one day it just wouldn't turn on. I think it is a piece of ????????

  • Anonymous Nov 27, 2008

Same thing happened to me. I turned the power off and pulled out the shredder tray to empty it, then when I put the tray back in, the power wouldn't come on. I've had this shredder less than 2 months and have probably used it less than 20 times! The red overheat light has never been on.

I have the same problem, used it last night  for the first time in about a year.   Just stopped working, no warning that anything was wrong.   Now it won't turn back on.    This shredder is terrible and I am disappointed in Staples for selling a defective product.

  • CrazieMom Jan 07, 2009

I just went to turn mine on and it won't turn on. Worked fine the last time I used it a few onths ago. Husband is in taking it apart now to see if he can put a toggle switch on it.

  • Anonymous Jan 21, 2009

I have the same problem. Was working for few months. Used only 15-20 times and it suddenly stopped working. Called staples and they said to send it to their repair center in Brooklyn and they will fix it for no cost but I need to bear the cost of sending. Don't know yet if it is worth.

  • mini14gb Mar 19, 2009

Yep same thing here after about a year of lite service. I wonder if they will take it back w/o receipt?

  • Anonymous Mar 28, 2009

We're bringing ours back today....same problem...worked well for 3 months and now just won't turn on at all...

  • Anonymous Mar 28, 2009

yes, same problem here. On switch was always funky, but now it won't turn on at all!

  • Anonymous Mar 29, 2009

Blue light comes on when turned on. Mailmate will go in reverse but, will not go forward. Its practically new. I can't take it back because I do not have the receipt. What a piece of junk. Why would you buy another Mailmate or a Staples brand product, when Staples will not stand behind their products and believe me I "use to be" a really good customer due to my job...

  • Anonymous Apr 10, 2009

same problem, blue light ON, works in reverse, forward doesnt work!!

  • John Edwards May 05, 2009

Mailmate shredder decided after 18 months to not turn on. Cost $90 after tax. Warranty is one year. Worked well when functioning but year and a half obsolesence is ridiculous.

  • Anonymous May 15, 2009

mine light on run fine in reverse no forward to shred

  • Anonymous May 19, 2009

Six months old and now won't turn on.Staples offered me £20.00 credit without receipt although cost £40.00.They no longer sell this item must be because of number of complaints, put me off buying from Staples in the future.

It looks like there is a switch attached to the back of the unit that kills the power when you remove the trash drawer. I believe that when you empty the bin the piece attached on the drawer that activates the switch falls off with the shredded paper thus leaving the unit dead.
Any idea where to buy parts ?

@kenn614 You are so right thank you!! We put wax over the button to hold it - and then taped it over. Works like a charm!

  • Jamie Wolf Jul 21, 2012

Mine, too! The machine wouldn't turn on until I pushed the button inside, then it worked perfectly. Thanks!

Yea mine died after about a year. Not much usage on it either. So I took mine apart after drilling access holes in the bottom for the six screws. You'll need a long philips scew driver, about 10 inches to take the screws out. I replaced the blown 5 amp fuse. This is soldered into the circuit board. So I soldered a removable fuse holder as I'm sure this will blow again. I used parts from some other electronics that I keep so I can repair the useless products that are made now.

Went to the hardware store, bought a 10 inch phillips screwdriver, drilled 6 holes on the bottom
of the unit to access screws easily, changed the 5 amp / 125V fuse... as good as new! Thanks!

Important note on getting the power switch fix in the back to work while toggling it on and off to reset the shredder. Make sure to pull out the paper bin while you toggle the power switch on and off a dozen or so times and then put the basket paper bin back in place. When you power the unit back on the forward button should work again and the shredder should feed paper through properly.

Thanks for this fix! Toggling the switch off and on a dozen times fixed it completely! I hate to give up on anything the first time so I am a big fan of searching on the internet for answers.

I took my Mailmate back to Staples and exchanged it for the model that took it's place. It's been working great. Since it was still under warranty when I took it back, it didn't cost me anything extra. SteveChen, I never got to try your solution but I salute you for having the determination to fix it yourself! From what they told me at Staples, the upgrade has eliminated the power problem. Apparently, the last model was just plain crappy as is evident in the number of people in various forums who have had the same problem. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the new model is indeed free of power issues!

My unit had a blown fuse on the internal circuit board- it's soldered onto the board, so not so easy to replace. Just getting the main shredder unit separated from the base took some time to figure out- it's glued-in on the front panel so some careful prying and separating are called for. Then the screws are easily accessible with a regular #1 phillips screwdriver.

I just fix my mailmate shredder. I had same problem- no power, no blue light. Problem is power switch- top of unit.

After remove all screws- good luck, you need LONG-LONG screwdriver and one short screwdriver with out handler, because few screws almost imposable to remove. I did make few holes on bottom of unit to remove 4 screws.
you have two ways to fix switch problem-
1. replace it, if you can find new switch.
2. solder two wire to switch and make a hole on top of unit. when you need to power unit, turn back switch on and touch two wire as switch.

Good Luck!

My Staples Mailmate Shredder stopped working during heavy use. The power light would come on, but when I tried to put a piece of paper in, it wouldn't shred. The reverse light would come on, but it wouldn't go in reverse. The forward light came on when pushed at that point, but it wouldn't shred. I turned it off for over an hour and then tried again. This time it worked!

I ruined a previous Mailmate. I thought my son put too many sheets in, so I quickly squirt lubricating oil on the sheets while they were shredding, thinking it would help them go through easier. Instead, it made them stick together and jam up the machine. I got another because I liked it so much.

I'm currently working on shredding 3 years of tax returns. This machine is a workhouse and I highly recommend it. Just empty it when it's full and don't put too many sheets in at a time. Give it a rest of at least 15 min. every so often during heavy use.

Picked a Mailmate out of neighbor's trash this evening - it was dead - found this site and verified its problem was the front power switch. It works when pressure is applied to the inboard (right) side because only two of the four posts on the switch work (cheap-***). Not sure if it is worth the time to repair. I should have taken Wcrickard's advice - I got a blister on my finger taking those damn six screw out!

If you can disconnect the power to unit and check shredding blade alignments to see if there is a clog or if the blades are out of alignment and stuck. If there doesn't seem to be a problem with the blades make a visual inspection of the off/on/reverse switch.

Constantly runs when on auto and won't accept paper

Shut off power and turn the shredder upside down. It is highly likely you will find shredded paper jammed in the mechanism, especially near the center where the feed sensor is located. A thorough cleaning should get your shredder operating again

Staples mailmate SPL 727MM will not power up

Shredder refused to power on. No light... nothing.
1st step: (MAKE SURE THE THING IS UNPLUGGED FROM 120 V FOR FOLLOWING STEPS)
So, i dismantled it according to previous postings and inspected visually everything. Nothing had heated, all solderings were OK on the boards. Did few checks on the interlock drawer switch with an ohmeter: tested OK. I removed the 2 screws holding the little board where the power on switch is mounted. Ohmeter said no action across switch prongs when i push the button. I drowned the button with tape head cleaner and activated the button a hundred times. After it dried, i repeated the operation.
It cured the problem. I Dont think these kind of switches can be found... cheap stuff.
Had some problem finding a 10 inches phillips screwdriver to open the case... Electronic store had one...brand is Xcelite.
....have fun challenging those China made gizmos !

Staples Mailmate Shredder do not get powered on.

Hi there,

First of all you try plunging them in to other power board, check the cable and the plug (check if the cable or plug not getting shorted), make sure the circuit breaker for the shredder outlet is on.
tell me is there any humming noise? or any sign of power getting in to it?

Please post back further comments for more information...

Thanks

No power to Staples mailmate

There is a 10mm 5amp @ 250v fuse on the main board that is probally blown . I unsoldered mine and soldered a pigtail fuse holder with a convient sized 5 amp fuse inside in its place . The shredder is not too bad to take apart , the head comes apart from the body of the shredder .Turn it upside down and you will see 6 or 7 phillips screws .Once these are removed the head assembly opens up and you will see the circuit board which is held in place by 2 phillips screws. A quick ohm meter test will reveal the fuse condition. It was an easy fix just MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THE UNIT UNPOWERED while you work on it or its unassembled.
