Question about Toshiba DR4 DVD Recorder

Open Question

Scrambled picture DVR records fine and sound is fine, but at times picture will begin turning red and scrambles like a scrambled station on TV. Sometimes will clear on its own and sometimes I have to turn off or unplug to clear. Picture will do this whether watching TV through DVR or watching either recorded disk or purchased movie disk. Used lens cleaner disk and did not fix problem. I think problem originated when trying to view a disk that received an error telling me to clean disk or disk was bad. Any suggestions or ideas? DVR only 7 months old.

SOURCE: Toshiba DVR recorder incorrect disk message

You could try the factory initializing process I found on another webesite (AVS Forums): "Had this message pop up a few weeks ago. Tried the solutions in the manual, no go. Tried unplugging it for 7 days, no go. Called Toshiba customer service @1-800-631-3811, the tech told me: 1) turn on TV and set to receive your DVD signal 2) Turn on DVD player and remove any discs 3) put Dvd / VCR selector on DVD 4) at the same time, push channel selector button UP (^) along with the PLAY button 5) hold the buttons down until TV screen shows "Initializing" message, release buttons, let DVD player go thru it's reset cycle and shut down 6) turn DVD player on and watch your DVD movies now Works like a charm. Put this in your manual for the next time." My unit has not worked since December of last year, I only had it for one year and it conveniently stopped working right after the one year warranty. My unit was not functioning whatsoever past turning it on, but when I did the factory initialization I was able to operate my unit again....UNFORTUNATELY, it still does not read disks, I still get the "Incorrect Disk" message. I guess I could consider it progress. But still try it, it may work for you. My unit just seems to be fried beyond repair. If anyone has any suggestions on how to correct the incorrect disk problem, I would be greatly appreciative. I'm not ready to throw mine away yet!

SOURCE: System Error

FYI...the best suggestion I've seen is to hold the channel up and play buttons simutaneously....thereby causing the machine to return to the "factory initialized" state. So far so good for me. We'll see. photog1

SOURCE: movie skips and freezes during play

CD and dvd disc cleaners will not solve the problem, a deeper and delicate cleaning procedure by cleaning the lens manually with an cotton swab is needed...
Although the quality of newer discs is to be discussed.

When done the machine turns off automatically, and you turn it onagain. Every time mine has stopped working this has fixed it. This might work with yours as well.

SOURCE: recording with comcast hd box and toshiba VCR/DVD

1st, see if you can get another cable box that offers component as well as RCA outputs on the back. Does your cable box have S Video out and does your toshiba have S Video in? If so, hook up the S Video from cable box to Toshiba. Then hook up R&W audio from Cable Box out to Toshiba In. Set the channel on the cable box to what you want to record. Set Toshiba to record channel 3 or 4, whichever your Toshiba is set on. The cable box controls the channel you are recording. You cannot set the recorder to the channel you want to record. It must be either 3 or 4. Try it. If everything else fails, you have to go cable from wall to cable in on cable box, cable out on cable box to cable in on Toshiba then either cable or RCA out on Toshiba to TV.

I solved the same problem by disabling SIMPLINK from OPTIONS menu. I own the LG TV myself. The LG TV comes SIMPLINK "ON" as default setting from the factory. Go to MEMU -> OPTIONS -> Turn SIMPLINK to "OFF". This should work....

It isn't programmable, once you have it wired to the TV you select function display and it should program itself if properly connected.

Can record on DVD disc will not play on DVD player

Make sure the materials you're trying to record onto the DVD
is not Copyrighted. Try to record a normal TV program onto your
VHS, transfer it to your DVD and then play it. See if that will
work. A VHS movie is usually Copyrighted and Protected by
Macrovision. The picture output can be displayed on a TV set
for viewing but is scrambled black to a DVD Recorder.

Screen distorted, cannot watch dvd or vcr

If you are located near a tv station that is broadcasting on the same frequency that your dvd player is trying to use, you will pick up some of the stations' signal that will cause some video ( and sometimes audio) interference. To remedy this you need to set the dvd player to use another frquency (channel). To do this there may be a small switch on the back of the unit or you may have to do it through the players' programming menu where you would look for something like 'output channel select'. I hope this helps :)

How do I hook up the mwr10d6 and set up to record from cable dvr or vcr? I play dvds ok when i try to record it was all scrambled like i might have hooked it up wrong somehow. Do not have instruction...

Here is a link to the manual, but it is a little dense:

Now that the digital conversion is imminent, nothing will ever be simple again.
This is not the ONLY way to record with this machine, but here is one way: (I'm also assuming that you have a cable or satellite BOX - if you don't, let me know):
1. Connect a red, white, and yellow cable from a red/white/yellow OUT of your cable or satellite box to the Video IN and Audio IN of the Magnavox.
2. Connect a second red, white, and yellow cable from the Video and Audio OUT of the Magnavox to a red/white/yellow IN of your TV (most TV's only have INs and not OUTs, hence they may be unmarked either way - but this situation is rapidly changing).
3. Change your TV to the channel that corresponds to the red/white/yellow port - some TV's label it "AV1," "AV2" etc. - others label it "Video1", "Aux 1" etc. - I would have to know the exact model # of your TV to be sure.
4. As long as you can see the channel that you are trying to record on the TV screen, you can just press REC on the Magnavox with a blank DVD inserted.

Like I said, this is not the ONLY way, but it is probably the simplest.

Recording from my vcr to the dvd hardrive

It may be that the tape you are trying to record from is copy-protected. You will then get a "scrambled" picture

Scrambly TV

take a quick peek in the manual and find out where to disable the progressive scan features. may be a button on the back, or you may have to go through the on screen menu to find it. take the disc out and see if you can view what's on screen. or since you said you had a couple of movies that did work properly, put one of those in, start the movie, go into the dvd player setup menu and disable the progressive scan settings
