Hi, I have a Gateway GP6-566C SE. I am trying to have it read a bootable CD but it doesn't seem to recognize the CD on a bootup. Looking at the bios I can see that the CD is supposed to check the CD...

Most desktops will check the floppy drive when starting up anyway regardless of what setting is in the bios, try to look for any commands required for boot selection when you boot up...I have to hit TAB while booting up to select to boot from CD.

Let me know how you get on

My Dell 531S will not boot past the BIOS (Dell logo) screen. At first I thought it was the hard drive, since it wasn't recognizing anything connected to SATA port 1. Since then I have purchased a new...

It seems like you have multiple problems:

1. DVD-ROM drive not accessing the disk

2. unable to "disable" the "floppy" drive in BIOS SETUP

3. not recognizing anything connected to SATA1 port

It's time to take your computer to a qualified technician, for professional trouble-shooting.

Is your DELL computer still under warranty? If so, exercise the warranty.

Or, maybe you should just remove the "new" disk-drive, the RAM, the DVD-drive, and then responsibly "recycle" the old computer, and purchase a brand-new system, repurposing the disk/RAM/DVD components.

I have an optiplex gx150 pIII, with a floppy drive. I downloaded the set up floppy so I could do a new install. after running the floppy disk, the messages says hit enter to continue. I place the xp sp2...

You don't need the install floppy... hit the F12 key when booting and you will get a boot order selection and tell it to boot to the CD. If it still doesn't see the HDD then you are most likely having a disk read problem with your hard drive. If that is the case you should boot into the system BIOS and see if the HDD is recognized there.

I am installing a new WD3200AAJB HD in a Dell Dimension 4550. This is the only HD in the system. There are also 2 CD drives and a floppy drive. I used the jumper settings the drive came with which pins...

Reinstall your old hard drive as master and install the new hard drive as slave.

Here is the link to jumper settings from Westrn Digital;

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1540&p_created=#jumper

If you've got your jumper settings wrong and installed your os on the 127 GB section of the 320 GB Hard drive and you change jumper settings and then you have problems you may need to reinstall the old hard drive as master and the new hard drive as slave. Reformat the new hard drive as 320 GB, and as a bootable drive. You can either do a disk copy from old to new or reinstall your os on the 320 GB drive. Please let me know how this goes. My hard disk cant be recognize when i install xp cd to my Acer M1641 with a vista OS. my cable is sata not IDE. how can i convert my vista to XP

You will need to install the SATA drivers for XP. First, download the proper drivers for your SATA controller and put them on a floppy (will properly have to use an external floppy drive). At the beginning of the XP installation you will need to press F6 and install your drivers.
Be aware that there are only a few external floppy devices that XP will recognize. (Sony, IBM are two of them).

Non system message

Your boot sequence is probably not set to boot from the Hard drive first. Remove any floppy disks/CD's from their drives and try to boot it.

If you are still getting the message then you have files that are corrupt on your hard drive.

Problem with disk drive A:

First, you should try to keep the floppy drive. If you can find one, I highly recommend getting the floppy drive cleaner diskette. They're hard to find now, but it's worth it if you want to continue to use your floppy drives. If cleaning it doesn't resolve the issue, next item to try is replacement of the floppy drive. You can borrow a floppy drive from someone, plug it in and test to side if it fixes the problem, if not, then it's either a motherboard issue (which I doubt) or a software/windows XP problem (more likely of the two). In which case I would recommend reinstalling windows XP to see if it fixes the problem before shopping for a new motherboard or a new computer.

Good luck

Did it work before?

If yes, then it died.

If no, then replace it.
