SOURCE: Feed Dogs, Thread Tangle

Hi Jeanette! You have a Singer Featherweight--the best sewing machine ever made! (Mine dates from 1950/51 and I wouldn't trade it for the world.) These beautiful, sturdy machines were designed to be easily repairable at home, but you'll need a copy of the Service Manual (get the Instruction manual too, if you don't have one.) Go to www.singer-featherweight.com and check out what they have available.

I had a similar problem (needle thread not catching the bobbin thread) and the problem was that I hadn't put the needle in correctly (flat side to the left). Also, I will occasionally get thread wrapped around the bobbin housing--sewing along just great and then everything comes to a screeching halt. I'm not sure why that happens, but I'm getting pretty good at taking the bobbin housing apart. The manual is pretty clear on how to do it. You can contact me direct at robbie1949@comcast.net for more information.

Thanks!

Robbie

SOURCE: Singer 3962 Thread Catching Under face plate (catching on position finger)

I had a problem with the thread balling up under the face plate, too.
I have a Kenmore 385 16528000. I don't know if with other brands that this will pertain to them, but this was my solution:
I had the needle in the wrong way! The top part of the needle that is inserted into the machine needs to go in with the FLAT SIDE AWAY from you. So I hope that helps somebody!!

SOURCE: bobbin thread won't catch

I've just had this exact problem with my model 2037. The problem, according to 3 shops I've taken mine to, is that the shuttle hook (the metal piece that the bobbin sits in) is broken and needs replaced. Problem is, the piece is next to impossible to find.

Try a brand new needle and verify it is installed correctly. Rethread the machine, top & bottom.

If the machine continues to miss the bobbin thread, most likely the timing is off. Search for sewing machine timing or take it for service.

I have a singer 3321 talent. Where the bobbin sits is catching & clumping, creating a birdsnest on the back. I tried rethreading both the bobbin and the top, checked my needle, adjusted the tension.

If you haven't already, install a brand new needle. Then make sure to RAISE the presser foot before threading the upper thread.

Also check to make sure the needle, thread, and fabric are compatible.

If it continues, then it probably needs service.

Why needle is not catching the bobbin thread

All problems like this are caused by incorrect threading of the cotton thread. Even if you have done it before, thread the cotton using the instructions in the manual.

Also make sure the bottom bobbin and its housing are correctly inserted.

Brand new sewing machine wont stitch. Any ideas?!?!

I'm sure you've done this, but I'll just throw this out there. Did you pull the bobbin thread through the groove that slants on the left side of the needle plate starting from the upper left corner of the bobbin cover?

There is a video tutorial on this Amazon page on how to use this attachment. Basically,, the forked arm fits over the needle clamp, and it attaches to the machine the same way any presser foot does. Check the video, it's very clear. The video is the last one of the group of small picture icons on the far left side of the page near the top of the page.

Bobbin thread won't catch with needle thread

check that the needle is in the right way round i.e. with cut out on the needle facing into the machine. if this is fine then check that as the needle comes back up from the lowest point that it goes to, that the point on the bobbin case passes just above the hole in the needle, i.e. in the middle of the cut out.(if not it needs re timing) if threaded a small loop should appear at this point for the bottom bobbin to catch if not slacken the top thread and try again.
