SOURCE: ge washer won't agitate
If the washer won't agitate at all, but the motor and belts are turning,
then you may have drive coupling or transmission issues. In this case, it
is well worthwhile to have a technician check the machine to verify this.
Sometimes, the base of your agitator can strip out, especially from
overloading. In such a case, the splines are damaged inside the agitator,
and can be seen after the agitator is removed.
If you can hear the motor running, and the water is moving a little bit, but not like normal where the clothes are being worked around you might just have worn out agitator dogs. This is a really easy 15 minute do it yourself fix, and the parts are less than $10 and widely available. Removed hose connecting to water pump at tub. Removed clog (ink pen, coins, etc). Replaced and ran washer. Ran through all cycles - no leaking, no pausing of cycles. Problem is resolved.

I would guess that your pump has gone south as the machine needs the full power of the pump to evacuate the water from the tub. It just could be that the pump has gotten stopped up by many strands of lint washed out of the clothes. Most likely your pressure filter that keeps these strands from going into your pump has clogged and no longer lets the water pass. You are going to have to either take the filter apart and clean it or replace it with a new one. Replacing it is probably the cheapest as far as time is concerned. If you turn the machine over on a side, then you can discover the filter is a round plastic container about 6in in dia. and two small hoses connect to it with tensioned ring clips. To take it apart, you have to remove 3 or 4 compression clips around the rim pointed in toward the center. It also could be made of one piece and you really have to replace. Test it to see if you can force water through it.
