Western Digital My Book Pro - Replace Disks

I had both 500gig drives fail - out of warranty. I've purchased 2 1tb drives and was expecting them to work in this drive casing and raid setup. NO LUCK getting the drives to work so far, disks not recognized .... any suggestions?

Sorry, it is a My Book Pro Edition II. A dual drive setup for Raid 0 or Raid 1. I have 2 new, identical 1tb Hitachi drives that I would like to get to work in the WD case, in place the the 2 500gig WD drives that it came with. After the WD raid manager runs, it reports back that the device is not recognized.

it would be quite unusual for that swap to work. i recommend the proper way which is to get them with matching cases.

Same problem. This from WD Answer ID 1664:
Important: The user serviceable enclosure will only work with replacement hard drives from Western Digital. Inserting a non-Western Digital hard drive into the enclosure could cause damage or data loss.
So Hitachi drives will not work at all. After talking to tech support, it seems you have to have them send you a replacement disk in order for it to work.
I'm looking for a way around this since I want to upgrade my dual 500 G drives with dual 1 TB drives also. Maybe they throw something onto the boot sector that tells the MyBook controller what to do, who knows? The search goes on.

Well, clarified everything with WD, here is a quote from their support person: "The drives in the enclosure cannot be replaced with any other drive, and once the warranty expires it cannot be replaced."

So you may ask, what's the point of a RAID when you can't replace any drives? Good thing the drives look like books, I'll use them for bookends when they go.  Time to buy a Drobo.

> after one week

Western Digital warranties the disk-drive to work for at least one year.
If it does not, then exercise the warranty to get a replacement, at minimal cost to you.

Try connecting it to a different PC, to see if your PC's "blue-screens" happen without it being attached.

My western digital hard drive stopped working

Get the serial-number from the label on the device.
Access W.D.'s web-site to "check warranty status".
If the warranty is valid, W.D. will replace it, at minimal cost to you.
If the warranty has expired, then W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- buy a new MyBook from their web-site, and cite the serial-number of your drive, and you'll get a discount on your purchase.

Sounds like a drive failure. If it under warranty then its time to trade it in.

It whirs for a few seconds, stops, then whirs again for a few sec

The hard-drive is "dying".

Is it still under "warranty"?

When you have the serial-number of the hard-drive inside the external unit, access Western Digital's web-site, and check the Warranty Status.

Note that Western Digital (the maker of the external drive)
has a "Customer Loyalty" program. Enter the serial-number
of the hard-drive on their web-site, and you can purchase a new external hard-drive at a significant discount.

Western Digital MY BOOK 500gig - Drive does not appear

Check the driver letter assignement, and make sure there is no conflict on that (happened to me on my laptop as well).
I found out by reading this: www.devicedriverfinder.com/blog/device-errors/external-hard-drive-troubleshooting

Definitely don't format if not required, you can first try to restore the MBR.

Western Digital 500gig external drive

it sounds like hard drive data may be corrupted. This could be due to a number of things. A power failure, hardware failure etc.. If the drive will not even let you access it you'll probably have to just format it im afraid.

Error code -1309

Try to copy the file to another part within the drive it's in, this is a READ error. once it's there, move it to the WD drive.

Good luck!
