Not to state the obvious, but it really depends on the type of bike you have. If it is any standard mountain bike, most likely will have english threads.

impossible to tell you without knowing the bike brand and model and year, although you have provided that 1999.

If you take into a bike shop, which is the usual place to purchase the parts you need, they will be able to tell you what size Bottom Bracket will fit your bike, also what options you will have for replacement cranks and bottom bracket. This could be a very complicated issue when replacing with parts that are 11-12 years newer, the shop will be best equipped to give you all your options.

I'd advise you to consult a bike shop as there may some interactions between a given BB and a given crank that may result in chainline problems. If you work with them and they can't get the recommended parts to work they will have to make it right.

Why is your crank "very worm [sic] after little use"? Do you mean the chainrings (which are replaceable)?

There may be other things at work here that a shop might spot and resolve.

Bottom bracket size

Typical mountain bicycles are 73mm, though modern (in the last 5 or so years) some have been going to 68mm. You can measure the bottom bracket shell. That is the part of the frame where the bottom bracket is inside. Measure from edge to edge without including the cups of the bottom bracket itself.

Bottom bracket size

probably 73x113

if you want to be sure, measure the width of the Bottom Bracket shell (on the frame) with a ruler, it will either be 68 or 73, but 73 is the standard for MTB.

if you are using the original single speed crank, 113 will work fine. if you are adding gears you will need something wider.

I need to know what kind of crankshaft does a mongoose men's melee have?

Ya mean BOTTOM BRACKET? Probably something at the low end of Shimano. They don't publish the minutae for their department store bikes.

You could ask Mongoose directly or take it your Local Bike Shop and have them determine the answer (which is recommended in Mongoose's manual if you want service on a 3-piece crankset anyway).

What is the diameter on the mongoose blackcomb handlebars?

It would be stamped right on the clamp area. Loosen the stem's front face and look. That would only tell you the size of the 'bulge'. Otherwise, measure the dimension you need with a caliper.

What is the difference between tire size 255/70 and 265/70

Hello Projocs03,

Tires are typically measured tire width (sidewall)/tire ride height/wheel size. The differences of the two tire sizes you published are .4 of an inch difference in width/sidewall. And about .55 in over all diameter which would impact you revs per rotation. Depending on your wheel size.

Attached is a comparison of the two given the variable of 17" rim.

I added the above link so you can research further or change any variables you need to know. However, the most important thing to understand is the impact of your speedometer. Different sizes will have different impacts. For example going to a bigger tire will show a slower speed on your spedo that your traveling.

Good luck

I would like to up-grade the crank too 53/39 what product can I use?

This would depend entirely on what Bottom Bracket your frame can accept. I'd take it down to a bike shop and let them figure out the BB size and length. Then you can shop around (or let them provide it).

I am trying to find out what size the Mongoose sx43 is. It is from 2000 and is bright yellow.

It could be one of several sizes. To determine the size you can measure the bike from the center of the bottom bracket (where the cranks install into the frame) up the seat tube to the top of the frame. This will give you the size of your bicycle.
