I lost the remote and need to get my TV into "game mode." I have tried and tried and can't figure out how to do it. I bought an RCA Universal Remote and I can't do it with that either. The fact sound works for a moment when power button is held and that you have to unplug to turn off or on means not a circuit problem but that the set is likely in the tech mode or service adjust mode.
I think the best way to resolve this is call Philips (they are Sylvania, Magnavox, and Philips) customer service with the model number and talk to a tech (not the idiots in CS) who will know how to exit this and what the code means--code will tell the tech what is going on.
You'll have to get a universal remote, most likely. Most remotes have an Input button on them that will change the TV to Line-In mode. Whatever universal remote you get will come with an instruction booklet on how to program the remote.
A warning, though, not all universal remotes will work with all TVs, particularly older models. You may have to have the remote search for the code, which can take up to an hour. It's still no guarantee of success, though. You may buy the remote only to find it does nothing for your TV.
I had the same problem programming my directv remote to recognize the ssc719c. What finally worked was programming AV1 (not 'TV') with the sylvania DVD code 20821. This allowed me to turn the tv on and off and change tv channels, but wouldn't allow me to mute or change the volume. To fix this, (at least in my case) you have to program your remote to recognize the volume and mute buttons in the AV1 slide setting. I assume other (non directv) remotes similarly disable the volume and mute buttons when the remote is not in satellite or tv mode. Anyway, here are the instructions that activated the volume & mute buttons on my remote: "Depending on how you set up your remote, the VOL and MUTE may control the volume only on your TV, regardless of the position of the MODE switch. This remote can be set up so that the VOL and MUTE keys work only with the component selected by the MODE switch. To enable this feature, perform the following steps: 1. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT keys until the green light under the DIRECTV position flashes twice, then release both keys. 2. Using the number keys, enter 9-9-3. (The green light will flash twice after the 3.) 3. Press and release the VOL+ key. (The green light flashes 4 times.) Now the VOL and MUTE keys will work only for the component selected by the MODE switch position."
To sum up: if you find a code for your remote that will turn your tv on and off, but doesn't seem to do much of anything else, it's probably the right code; your remote is probably set up not to recognize volume or mute inputs in AV1 or AV2. You change that using a remote-specific code that's probably found somewhere on the remote maker's website.
We have a Sylvania 6313CB TV/VCR combo. I bought a universal remote and the code would not work when I tried to program it to the "TV" button using all those possible codes listed in the books. So, on the universal remote, there was a button named "VCR" and when I programmed in the code "0000" all worked. This was a $6.00 universal remote named "One For All" we bought at the Big Lots store.
Specifically, here is what I did:
Turned TV on
Pushed the "VCR" button and light blinked once
Pushed and held the "set" button until it blinked twice
Released the "set" button and entered the numbers "0000"
Pushed the on/off button and it worked including volume, channel up/down and channel change by entering the channel number.
Hope this works for you too.
