Can I replace my processor i7-720QM with i7-2860QM

Can I upgrade my processor in my dell laptop from a i7-720QM to a i7-2860QM. The processor I have is a first generaltion and would like to replace it with a second generation and do not know if there would be a compatibilty problem. I believe same socket same wattage but not sure in the additional graphic on second generation would work or not.

Graphics has nothing to do with the processor. because graphics card is separately located in the motherboard. Process you can replace.

Dell inspiron 1420 cpu upgrade ???

There are very little things that you can upgrade in an laptop. The processor that you have on your laptop is top end processor in its family and the thae best you can do is to go for a faster core2duo as any other processor will not fit on your laptop motherboard.

Contact your system manufacturer to know about compatible processor for your laptop.

Upgrade processor

Typically you cannot upgrade just the processor. Makes more sense to replace the unit.

If my dell studio 1747 currently sports a i7 720qm (w/ the model also supporting the 820qm). Should I be able to plug & play upgrade to a 840qm without worrying about bios compatability?

If you're talking about the dell studio 1747 laptop, then I would suggest not doing this. Replacing processors in laptops means opening up the laptop and probably damaging the laptop or voiding the warrantee in the process. If its still under warrantee I would suggest talking directly with Dell Support to see what options are available to you for an upgrade. I would advise against removing processors from laptops yourself and leaving that to the manufacturer that you purchased it from, that way the work is warranteed.

Dell support representatives are actively standing by on their live chat sessions at support.dell.com

Simply get the "service tag" number off the bottom of the laptop and the website should show you all the information available on your laptop, plus warrantee information.

I have a Dell inspiron 1545 and need to upgrade processor for Virtualization and Windows XP mode. For a doable boot with Widnows Server 08. It is possible to swap the processors? or do I need to buy and...

In general, processors are not replaceable except with the same model. There are several problems including, motherboard circuits, BIOS support, soldering, etc. Even just swapping processors is a difficult to impossible job best left to experts.
If you price motherboards, you'll only find a replacement, not an upgrade. Spend your money on a desktop system.

Processor upgrade

Hi ryonsdad,

I checked out the Latitude D610 laptop, and you'll be glad to know that you have the following processor upgrade options:

1.) Pentium M 780 Processor - 2.26 GHz, 2MB, 780, Pentium-M Dothan, 533FSB (fastest upgrade)
2.) Pentium M 770 Processor - 2.13 GHz, 2MB, 770, Pentium-M Dothan, 533FSB
3.) Pentium M 760 Processor - 2.0 GHz, 2MB, 760, Pentium-M Dothan, 533FSB
4.) Pentium M 750 Processor - 1.86 GHz, 2MB, 750, Pentium-M Dothan, 533FSB
5.) Pentium M 740 Processor - 1.73 GHz, 2MB, 740, Pentium-M Dothan, 533FSB (slowest upgrade)

You can buy these processors from Dell Spareparts or otherwise from a 3rd party store.

Hope this helps!

Peace! :)

Processor compatability

Processors have a matched frequency rating with the motherboard and memory. So, when replacing or upgrading the processor, the new processor will need to have the same frequency as the old one. If the processors use the same type of memory, ie... PC2100, then ther are most likely compatable, and the use of a processor that was made for or from the same make of laptop is always a good idea. Some processors are designed specifically for use in certain manufacturer's system configurations. For example; say you have a Dell Latitude C840 with a 1.8ghz processor and you want to upgrade to a 2.2ghz processor from a Dell Inpiron 8600, this will work. Both of these machines use the PC2100 memory and have a matched frequency rating of 266mhz, and the processors are made for use in Dell machines. If you would like to tell me exactly what you're wanting to do, maybe I can recomend a processor for you. Let me know.
