When it goes to channel installation it does not detect any channels but it did have this fully tuned before. I have a portable cable.
Hello
The tuner section has the trouble. There is a memory IC [ a small IC which have 8 solder terminals], can be located very near to the main system control IC. Eventhough the size of it is small, its function on circuit, when the tV works is great. Trouble to this IC can lead to many more strange faults, that even a technician will get confused.
All the values, of tuning, color , contrast, and other adjustments we do with remote control or by the front panel of the Tv will be stored in this memory IC, and will retrieve to main system control IC, when we switch ON the Tv.
Now, this IC in your set is defective, and should be replaced with same type and number. It's number is very important, and must note it very well before buying a new one. This component can be bought from most of the electronic spare part selling shops at your town and won't cost more. But to replace it, you must have through knoledge in electronics. You have to ipen the TV, locate this IC, desolder it out from the board, and a new one to be soldered in.
If you have sufficant knoledge in electronics, enough expereince i solder technique, you can do it by yourself at home. If not, just get this set repaired by any expereinced service technican. OK.

So, I couldn't get the tuner to work (tried everything). Eventually I realised the cheapest solution would be to buy a digital set top box, and use this as the tuner instead of relying on the one built-in to the TV. Works fine.
But yes, I won't be buying another Panasonic in a hurry.

I would believe from what you said, you have solved your problem. You will need a UHF antenna to receive the signal. Walmart or Radio Shack has a great amplified antenna that will work for you.

You may be able to program your cable box remote to control your TV in addition to your cable box. When they initially set up your cable box they probably left a pamphlet giving you instructions on how to program your remote. I'm not sure why you can't change the TV channels manually but this may give you a work-around.

Your TV is not at fault, it is showing you the difference between HD and non HD channels. HD TV's work great with HD scorces but don't usually look that great with standard definition, Also the non-HD channels are more likely to be heavily compressed which makes them look bad too.
Testimonial: "You know, I think you're right. The cable company would never actually say that their service is flawed. They blamed the TV. Thanks anyway!"
