Ok here's how it goes:

you are installing a software for dial-up - means you need to connect your computer (equipped with a fax modem) to a "regular telephone jack". Old school Internet connection.

Your Belkin 802.11g router is used in tandem with a cable or DSL modem to get Internet connection.

Your Netgear MA401 pcmcia card 802.11b can only provide your computer a wireless connection to the router only.

Nevermind the Windows CE error - the Netzero software doesn't know how to handle your situation. CE by the way is the Windows version for PDA's and phones.

Hi,

To my understanding, your requirement is for a NEC 900 to be able to access the Internet. What you have are:

  • Netgear MA401
  • Belkin 802.11g router
  • Netzero dial up
Recommended course of action:
  • verify/upgrade the NEC900 from Windows CE 3.0 to 5.0
  • replace the Netgear MA401 with USRobotics Wireless MAXg USB Adapter (part # USR 5421);
  • configure the Belkin Router with another PC and verify Internet access before connecting the NEC 900.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

Pls verify that the V.90 56 Kbps is physically installed and is among the devices with correct driver(s) in the NEC900.

With the indulgence of worldvet, the built-in modem of the NEC 900 will not work with the telephone lineout of the Vonage interface. This interface uses VoIP while the built-in NEC modem is designed for standard 2 wire landline. The way I understand the set-up:

    cable > cable modem > Belkin Router > Port 1 > Vonage.

Most Vonage interface has a telephone port RJ-11 phone jack or phone connector that can accomodate regular telephone. Might it be that the NEC built-in modem is then being connected to this Vonage telephone port? If yes, then as stated earlier, it will not work. Possible resolution would involve:

    • PCMCIA to LAN card adapter that will work with Windows CE;

    • if the Belkin Router is also WiFi, then as earlier posted, USRobotics Wireless MAXg USB Adapte;

    • change the cable internet acces to 2 wire landline/DSL combo.

-Make sure you have a Modem from your Internet Service Provider
-Make sure your router is connected to the modem. (Modem should be connected to the Internet port at the back of the router.)
-Make sure you can connect online hardwired to the router
-If these devices are setup, it will broadcast wireless internet to your computer
-There's no such thing as dial up wireless

For the card:

-In installing the card, plug the card first, let the system detect the hardware. If it asks for the driver, insert the CD that came with it. Make sure your driver is compatible with your Windows version. If you are using Windows CE, download the Netgear MA401 Windows CE driver from Netgear's website.
-If installing the driver is successful, reboot your computer and you are ready to connect to the wireless network

Connecting to wireless network:

-On the bottom right hand by the system clock, right-click the little computer icon that says Wireless Connection, then choose View Available Wireless Network
-You should see the name of the signal coming from the Netgear router. Just highlight it then press connect.
-That should do it.

Do you have DSL service to your telephone? or are you supposed to connect to a ISP using a modem? If its a dial up modem you should be able to get a connection using Internet Options in Control Panel.

Do you have a Network cable attached to your router from your hand held?

If you have DSL, the service should be on, but a phone call to your provider may need to activate it once you're connected. All other phones or devices on the same phone number's line need a filter attached or you won't get a working connection.

Is your router configured to automatically run in a/b/g mode, or does it have to be setup first using a Network cable from your hand held to the router.

If you are using a modem to connect to internet, dial up or DSL, you may have to configure the router to clone your modems' MAC number.

I believe you have the wrong drivers for the operating system you are running. Try to go to the netgear and netzero websites and look around for drivers for windows CE.

Basicly the wireless router needs to be connected into the internet, then you will be able to connect to it. You need to install the card and make sure it works in your device, then connect into the router and it should work fine.

The driver that came with ma401 is not made for your handheld, I will look and see if I can get you a driver to get it to work. but the cd will most likely not work.

  • Ekse Oct 27, 2008

As NetGear don't offer Windows CE drivers for the the NetGear MA401 802.11b Wireless LAN adapter. see this page on how to use the adapter under Windows CE for the Handheld PC.

    http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/h/...

the page has drivers for CE 2, HPC pro and HPC2000, suggest you try them all, but as they are not for ce3. might not work.

Can you return the card you have? Replace it to another one that works with Windows CE 3.0 ask the dealer, and make sure.

Is it possible to connect an old IBM laptop 240X thinkpad to wireless internet

Yes but you need to install a PCMCIA wireless card and the wireless card driver.
There are several makes on the market, such as Netgear, D-link etc.
I suggest you Google search the Internet for PCMCIA wireless cards and select one that suits your requirements.

Theencryption key secures your data from unauthorized access. The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router'swireless settings configured ie SSID, WPA or WPA2 encryption key and also thewireless cards in all the laptops and or computers needs to be configured withthese router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers cancommunicate with your wireless router.

Need a pc card for wireless internet connect.Have tried netgear does not work in computer. any suggestion. model of computer 570e imb thinkpad. old computer work great but need internet connection. thanks

You can order pretty much any PCMCIA Wireless network adapter. If the machine is older, you may want to try the "802.11g" or "802.11n" wireless notebook network card.
Try Belkin F5D7010, it uses the "g" signal band.

Drops the internet connection and has to be rebooted at least once a day.

Try to reduce the MTU of the router. If you're on DSL, set the MTU size to 1492, for Cable connection size is 1400 or 1463. You can do it on the router's admin page http://192.168.1.1

Try the laptop and the PCMCIA cards at an internet cafe. IF they don't work there as well, I recommend you throw the cards away or give them away and buy your self some new ones.

Belkin Notebook card and its wireless access point

Hello,

In Ideal scenarios, you should just plug in the card in the notebook and it should get installed automatically.

Thanyou may scan for the available networks and you should be able to seethe network of your Netgear router(Assuming that the Netgear you havementioned is wireless capable and configured).

You can connect to the network and it should work fine.

Let me know what happens.

Wireless network setup

Hi,

Based on your post, you currently have a working Netgear WiFi Card installed in your laptop. What you want to do is remove it from the laptop and install the said card to your desktop.

For your desktop to be able to accept the NetGear WFi card which is a PCMCIA Cardbus device, you need to install either:
1. a USB Adapter for PCMCIA as shown here; or
2. a CardBus/PCMCIA to PCI Adapter Card available here.

Either one will work. Of course you need to install the necessary drivers for the NetGear MA701NA in your desktop which is available from the CD installer that came with the NetGear or online here.

Considering the cost of the USB adapter or the PCMCIA to PCI card, you may want consider buying a PCI WiFi card or USB WiFi dongle.

Hope that this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
