After some time, installing and removing programs leaves parts and pieces all over your system. Uninstalling does not do a complete job. Some programs can clean up these traces as well as other issues that can affect the operation of windows.
Keeping all old files cleaned off, updating windows regularly, using good virus and spyware software helps. Sometimes the best answer is a complete reinstall of your OS and your applications.

My Compaq Presario computer does something very strange. Every day, several times a day when I am online computer light turns amber and it starts screeching. I can not continue using Internet when it...

Sounds like it is overheating. Pull the side panel off of it, clean the fan blades and vents. 3am may be the time that it looks for updates.

You may also want to download a free version of Super antispyware as well as malawarebytes, just to make sure you are not infected. These two programs together will remove problems that other virus software will miss!

Tip

Change the Amount of Time Before Programs Time Out

When an application hangs and no longer responds, XP displays a dialog box that prompts you to kill the application or wait a while longer. By default, the dialog box appears after the application hasn't responded for five seconds.
This can cause problems. For example, if a program is doing heavy-duty calculations in the background, it won't respond until the calculation is done, so the operating system will report that the application is hung, even though it isn't. You can use a Registry hack to increase or decrease the amount of time it takes before XP reports that the program has hung.
Run the Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. Select the HungAppTimeout entry and edit it to input a new value, in milliseconds. The default is 5000. Exit the Registry. You may need to reboot for the new setting to take effect. Try increasing the number in increments of 1,000 until you find a number that works.

My system says, (RAM) radon access memory low cpu intel (r) pentium 4 cpu, version 2.80 ghz. RAM 256 mb. What can I do to resolve this problem. Dell 4700 dimension

Windows XP requires a "bare-minimum" of 128MB of RAM, works "OK" with your 256MB of RAM, if you don't open too many programs at the same time, and if you close/re-open Internet Explorer about once an hour of usage.

But, Windows XP would be _much_ "happier" if you added 256MB or 512MB of RAM, because it is telling you ("available random access memory is low") that it is using all the RAM.

Add more RAM -- your computer will run much better.

try running (or installing) this game (whatever it is) in compatability mode.

To do so:
  1. Open Windows Explorer.
  2. Location the application executable.
  3. Right click the executable and click the Properties option.
  4. Select the Compatibility tab.
  5. Select the Run This Program in Compatibility Mode option.
  6. From the drop-down list, choose the operating system i.e. XP or win2k
  7. If necessary, select the option to run the program as an administrator.
  8. Click OK.
hope this works for you
