Kirby will only work with hose attachment - Kirby G4 Bagged Upright Vacuum

Let me clear this up...it works fine with the hose attachment but when I put the main head on it will not come on at all. I would think that this means there is nothing wrong with the switch, or fuse or anything like that because again, it works fine when I have the hose attachment on. The belt on the beater head is fine and I've had this machine for many years so I know how to change the belt and how to engage it when I put the main head on. I figured out that for some reason the piece that pushes the switch in is not pushing in far enough, but I can't figure out why. I stuck in a folded up piece of paper and then it worked fine but this is obviously a temporary fix. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the piece of steel that pushes the switch in as it is all one piece with the entire main head unit. Possibly the steel has worn down to the point that it's not making a connection with the switch? If that's the case then I would have to buy an entire new beater bar head (or whatever that whole front unit is called). I don't even want to know how much that will cost. If anyone has any ideas I'd sure appreciate the help. I have a day care home and daily vacuuming is a necessity. I cannot afford a whole new front piece. Whatever happened to the idea that this machine has a lifetime guarantee? That's why I paid so much for it in the first place.
Thank you all for your help,
    Susan

TURN THE BELT LIFTER IN THE FRONT CLOCKWISE UNTIL THE RED ARROWS LINE UP. NOW TURN THE LATCH AT THE TOP OF THE POWER NOZZLE AND TAKE THE NOZZLE OFF. HOOK THE HOSE EVENLY ON THE BAR BELOW THE FAN, LEAN IT UP AND LATCH IT ON WITH THE LATCH.

SOURCE: connecting hoses on Kirby G4

The hose attaches in place of the beater-bar head unit. To remove the head unit, lift the headlight assembly, then turn the square gray Kirby emblem counter-clockwise 3/4 of the way around until the red triangle on the square portion aligns with the red triangle on the base unit (this disengages the belt). Then flip the silver metal fastener that was underneath the headlight to release the head unit and remove the head unit. To attach the hose, simply line it up so that the safety button is engaged by the hose assembly and then use the metal fastener under the headlight to secure the hose to the base unit.

SOURCE: Using accessories on a Kirby Heritage 84

my guess with your kirby is the safety switch on the right side of your vacuum is not being pressed down, are you sure you have the right model of hose? any Heritage 1 2 or Legend 2 can work with it since they all have the same switch. your carpet head is working from the sound of it so either it's just that the high speed switch (being pressed fully down) doesn't work or you are not using the right type of hose (or the piece that engages the switch could be broken off

SOURCE: how do you put on the attachment hose?

The Heritage II Legend...First you make sure that the machine is unplugged from any outlet,. Now, raise your height adjust to the highest level. Next you will need to turn your belt lifter on the front of the nozzel to the right as far as you can. Now flip the hinged light cover up, and turn the latch that holds down the head to the left. Your nozzle is now released. Now take the hose and roll it on to the bar from the front to the back, make sure it is aligned and then turn the latch to the right locking the hose, and you are ready to kirby it up! Hope this fixesya! Let me know, Thanks, Rene (the Vacuum Doctor)

Kirby turns on with hose attachement but not with head attachment

Front of the unit, black switch that is pressed by this plastic protrusion from hose coupling has two parts. It is because ANY generation Kirby has speeds - HIGH for vacuuming with hose and LOW for using it with nozzle.
Looks like the switch went bad (Switch HERE)

We have instructions for replacing it too.
The "funny noise" with hose throws me off a bit though. Check if there is nothing in the hose (put a nickle through it).

Good Luck

No power getting through

Hi
The motor spindle should NOT rotate when there is nothing attached to the front. Its very dangerous. There are two square switches on the front of the machine which engage depending on wether its the main head or hose thats attached. Looks like on of them is sticking

How to use air pump attachment kirby sentria

Hi!
You need to take the power nozzle off and attach the thing that looks like a little plastic cup with two hooks on it. This is the intake guard. Attach it to the front. Now remove the cloth bag and put the hose on the hole where the bag was. You'll have to line the arrow on the hose up with the notch on the Kirby and push the hose arm toward the Kirby until it pops on. If you need to, lube up the edges of the hole with a wee bit of vaseline or hand lotion. This makes the hose engage easier.

Now, turn your massage cup (in your basic set of attachments inside out and hold it on the drain hole. If there is an overflow hole in the sink, you may want to cover it so that you won't be splattered with gunk. lol Now, turn the Kirby on and it will attempt to blow the clog on through the pipe. Sometimes it works...sometimes it doesn't. :0) Hope this helps...

I need to know how to use the attachments that came with the Kirby. I know how to use the shampoo/vacuum, but not the other attachments or the upholstery cleaner. Does anyone have any idea?

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
1st, you need to un-hook the lever @ the top of the Kirby head, dial off the belt from the Kirby Vacuum Head using the Kirby emblem in the front of the vacuum, that also serves as a hook/spoon to dial the belt off the fan pulley. Once you have removed the vacuum head you now hook up the attachment hose to use the attachments by locking the attachment hose to the top lever. All regular Kirby attachment will fix on the attachment hose end including the spin brush if you have one with your Kirby --- using the Kirby Shampoo spray the soiled area and use the spin brush to agitate the carpet and or upholstery, try not to use to much water. If you have a Kirby shampooer – use the recovery tank on the exhaust port of the Kirby (this means that the cloth/paper bag needs to come off and install the clear recovery tank. Please refer to the Kirby owners manual for any type of trouble shooting that you might need – or please feel free to contact your local vacuum dealer in the yellow pages or contact your Kirby factory manufacturer listed below:
